OT: Steve Yzerman steps down to return to Detroit

Submitted by Adrian on

To be fair it says he wants to come back home not necessarily to the Red Wings. There has to be more to the story though. No way he steps down so close to the season if he really just wanted to step down.

I just saw this a few moments ago - as the OP mentions, it does not specify whether he is simply returning to be home in Michigan or if this is in fact the prelude to being with the Detroit Red Wings.

That said, I think your feelings on this, if you're a Wings fan, would be:

As a Bolts fan, this is a kick in the nuts.  Hopefully he and his family are ok.  If it's simply to go back to the Wings then that is incredible.  I'd have to think that if he was leaving to go to the Wings that there would be a lot of rumblings in Detroit, seeing that Ken Holland is still employed...as far as we know.

My one and only piece of Wings memorabilia sits above my bar at home.  I was the high-bidder on an autographed, framed Steve Yzerman #19 home jersey.

The only problem is he signed the front of the jersey next the Wings logo, not the back next to his name.  So if I displayed the autographed front nobody knows whose jersey it is and if I display the back (which is what I decided on) nobody can tell it's autographed except me.

Loved Steve Y.   He was the guy more than anyone else who led us from the Dead Wings of the 80's to the dominant team of the mid 90's and beyond.  Welcome home!

Agreed and if he did, he would be the at the top of professional Detroit Sports people for me.

Isaiah Thomas, he turned the Pistons around, but never given chance to take over Pistons.

If SY came back and fixed the Wings?  I don't think there'd be anyone even close to him as the top of Detroit superstars.  Add that to 3 titles.  3? off the top of my head.

As a Tampa guy, I knew this day was coming for a long time. He's built a great team down here, but it was never a question of if he'd leave. Was always a question of when.

Shame that he couldn't win a Cup down here before he left, but he certainly had his chances.

We'll see. They have to remember how to finish. Were up on the Penguins 3-2 in the 2016 ECF. Lost the series. Went up 3-2 on the Caps in the 2018 ECF after winning three straight games. Got dominated by the Caps in games 6 and 7 and lost the series.

It's just a shame because had they won either of those series, they're hoisting their second, and possibly their third Cup. They definitely would've beaten the Sharks in the '16 Cup Finals. Not sure about the Knights since the Knights had their number in the regular season, but they definitely would've had a great shot.

I did NOT know this was not an 'if' but 'when'.   Granted, he's not taking over Wings yet.

Conversations I've had about SY mostly concluded 'why would he leave a good sitch in Florida to come run Wings.  Wings haven't been good.  TB has been good.

I did like our draft this year though.
