OT - South Carolina really hates Ohio

Submitted by Bloodoo on January 20th, 2020 at 9:58 PM

It looks like Michigan and South Carolina have something in common.  And as it turns out, the Palmetto State's hatred of Ohio is not limited to Clemson's recent CFP encounters with the Buckeyes:

“It’s because there’s a common trope of Ohioans coming up to South Carolina and driving up costs and making it harder to drive around,” a commenter said.

“Having grown up in SC, I can confirm our dislike of Ohio. Worst drivers ever. And they all drive minivans,” one person wrote

“Everyone from Ohio moves to SC and Ohio is the worst. Ever,” said another.

Of course, none of this is scientific, but just a little offseason fun.

Also, NJ hates everyone, and Florida hates itself.

Everyone thinks the drivers in their state/city are the worst...let me introduce to you Columbus, OH...literally some of the worst drivers in the country. I travel all over the country for work and it is so bad here. People cannot merge. I don't mean it figuratively, people do not know how to merge on the highway and it causes accidents. One thing you will find here is people start on the on ramp and will slow down and almost stop....rather than matching the speed of traffic and merging.

To be honest it actually is a great city that was ahead of the economic rebound and has phenomenal schools in the suburbs so I can't complain. Outside of OSU it's a city with fantastic suburbs, a hell of job market, etc.

In all fairness the James Cancer Center saved my moms life so kudos to them. But f*ck osu sports :)

We've been in Columbus 3 times in the last year-including for a "failure" of the James Cancer Center. My SIL lives and teaches in Pickerington. That on-going road construction disaster that is I-70 through downtown is truly special...I cannot imagine negotiating rush hour.

Otherwise, regarding traffic and driving: If you have the opportunity, visit SE Asia. I will not attempt to describe the driving there. Supposedly there are traffic laws...they clearly hold little sway. That being said, we have never seen an accident. It is the most wonderful, fascinating and gracious piece of organized chaos one will likely ever encounter. You are in 8 lanes of traffic and missed your turn-no problem...just slowly begin making a U-turn...oh my!

I dunno, I feel like I see this everywhere now. People are really tarded about how to merge properly. The other thing you see with merging is that people will try to race you to cram in front of you, nevermind there's about 1/2 mile of open space behind your vehicle and you're driving a Mercedes to their Yugo.

Findlay, OH, might have the slowest drivers I have ever encountered. Apparently no one has anywhere to be, because everyone cruises 5 under the speed limit on surface streets and don't bother pulling into the intersection to make a left, simply waiting for the whole light cycle to start over. Worst of all, the number of dead-stopped cars trying to get on the highway I have encountered is unfathomable for the ridiculously light traffic spread across three lanes. Then they are afraid to hit the gas.

I need to leave this thread, blood pressure going up...

I don't think Ohioans, in general, drive that bad... Most of my driving is highway, and people at least go 5 over in most cases, or stay right (from my experience between Toledo and Findlay). Honestly I think the worst part about driving in Ohio (and it is a big one) is the sheer number of staties all over the place. Probably 5 times the police density in Ohio than any other state. And we have speed cameras (don't speed through Toledo).

Having said that, COLUMBUS IS IN FACT THE WORST. I lived there several years and people are simply atrocious drivers. Zooming all over the place wildly in heavy traffic only to slam on their brakes 2 seconds later because traffic is stopped. No signals. No courtesy of any kind to other drivers.

Nice city, shitty drivers.

It is weird - when I lived in Cincinnati, everyone I knew who was in that "40 years old, a few kids and a minivan" category went down to Kiawah/Hilton Head/Charleston/Myrtle Beach for their vacations.  Like literally everyone.

It's a 1-day drive, relatively warm and on the water.  Closer than the Florida panhandle, I suppose.

We moved back to Ohio (wife and I both grew up in NE Ohio) in 2018 via the AF. The house we bought turned out to be a major lemon and the piece of work that sold it moved to SC. He's a typical Buckeye fan and drives a minivan. I am in no way surprised by this article.

So many great things in this map led by Florida's self hate.  The reach of the California hate in the west is impressive.  In Colorado the California hate is a newer and growing trend as they keep moving here.  There is still some residual hate against Iowa (idiots our wandering around) that I never understood.  Texas hate goes way back.  The old ski town joke: how do you get a BJ in Texas during spring break? You can’t because the C… S…ers are all in Colorado.

Why does IN hate KY? IL and OH seem like much more obvious targets.

Indiana and Kentucky is basically a college basketball rivalry. They used to play every year in a non-conference game, and since they're both blue blood programs, for awhile they were highly ranked, at least through the 70s and 80s, not as much on Indiana's part in recent history.

As a native Hoosier the Indiana-Kentucky "hate" has little to nothing to do with college basketball. Here, it is all about the Indiana vs Kentucky HS All-Star basketball series. Indiana has generally dominated the series and the interest is waning but when I was a child it was a huge deal-sold out both in Indiana and Kentucky...and there was no love loss here.

Culturally/socially, the dividing line between Northern and Southern Indiana is way, way north of I-70.  Growing up only a few miles from the Michigan line "we" would say the "line" was all the way up to US 6 and sometimes even crosses north of that. There is a huge "accent"language change here.

I live in Southwest Florida and can confirm the following:

1. Ohioans are moving here in droves as well.

2. They are the worst drivers (Ohio is one of two states where parents are responsible for driver's training; therefore, bad driving is hereditary).  I've developed a photo montage of Ohio drivers straddling lanes at intersections, crashed into trees in medians, etc..  It is quite remarkable how many vehicles doing absolutely stupid maneuvers have Ohio plates.

3. Minivan ownership is at a highly disproportionate level.

Also lol at the author of that article being from Kansas.

Side note: Interstate migration and the impact it has on demographics/politics is super interesting. No politics, so I'll stop there.

Yes we do hate Ohio down here in the beautiful state of South Carolina! Funny thing is I was at a conference last week with a Gamecock fan in Orlando and the first time I saw an Ohio plate I said, "I hate Ohio". All week long everytime we met someone from Ohio or saw anything with Ohio one of us would say that. If nothing else I converted one Gamecock to hate Ohio. Mission accomplished.

I've noticed that people in states like Colorado, Texas and now Idaho despise Californians with an unmitigated passion as well.   Yeah, I know a lot of the purported reasons.  New arrivals drive up housing costs, bring left-leaning politics, culture and values, etc.  Been to Ohio infrequently. I don't notice a difference on the bad driving. OC California has some of the worst drivers on the face of the earth, and I'm counting Russia, Mexico City and all of Asia in that extraordinary claim. It's horrific.

So college football rivalries - old and new - are superfluous on this question.

But yeah, more evidence that we all now live in the Divided States of America.
