OT: Ryan Day

Submitted by Bluenin on November 24th, 2019 at 10:51 AM

Is Ryan Day having a Brady Hoke like first season, benefitting off from Urban Meyer’s recruiting dominance, and then we see a steady decline after this season?  Just wondering if this team was so stacked that even Chris Ash would have been undefeated taking over this team?

We got fortunate in a few Hoke games his first year. Probably should have had one or two more losses. OSU’s closest game was yesterday. If they wouldn’t have fumbled, it would have been a 30 point blowout.

Think we won’t know his real quality until a few years down the line when its all his guys. Larry Coker dominated his first couple years, then the results faltered a bit.

Ryan Day is highly respected--OSU did not want to let him get away. Thus, the (sort of) narrative that Ohio State's admin didn't really go to bat for Urban.

If they can keep Day--they will be very good for a long time. Check out their recruiting--as good as always.

I remember this time last year people saying Alabama was one of the all-time greats, and they got their ass kicked by Clemson.  Same thing will happen to OSU if they play Clemson.  OSU is good, but they ain't no Clemson.

Doesn't matter. In order to stop the osu juggernaut you have to beat them. First once, then again. This team can beat Ohio state. This coaching staff can beat Ohio state. I hope that Saturday is the first step in dismantling the death star.

I don't see the Hoke analogy one way or the other. Day is an entirely different situation.

You might be able to ask if this is a situation where after a long stretch of success on the back of an exceptional coach the next guy afterwards is going to be able to profit from the work of his predecessor which helps make him look good. Of course Ryan Day has profited massively from Urban Meyer's work, just like Urban Meyer profited massively from Jim Tressel's work.

Urban Meyer obviously was able to go beyond just what Tressel had built and made it his own at a level just as high if not higher. It's a fair question whether Ryan Day could do the same or whether eventually things will settle at a level below that, but one no-one will be able to answer before they have a few more seasons with Day under the belt.

OSU has been in two fairly rare situations where established highly successful coaches left not because of fading success (a la Bowden at FSU or Brown at Texas) but because of off-the-field issues/corruption issues that however led to few tangible consequences for the program itself. One could argue that the "OSU machine" is bigger than any one coach, and that the only way that program will ever sink would not be related to coaching changes but to a systemic, institutional disruption.

A great college coach does three things really well.

1. Recruits at a very high level. Day has historically done this very well and looking forward seems to be doing as good if not better than Urban.

2. Hire really good assistant coaches and let them do work. Based on defensive improvement and recruiting, this seems to be going well.

3. Be able to make adjustments during the game. OSU best quarter is the 2nd and this is because of being able to make adjustments on fly instead of just waiting until halftime to make adjustments. It doesn’t take Day and his staff half a season to get the potatoes ripe to make potato salad.

Would the thoughts on Day be different if the game yesterday they won by 30? It was significantly closer to 30 plus than it was to Penn st winning. Take away the fumbles which Day has no control over and they score was easily 35-3.

Nope - his first recruiting class is like #2 in the nation and he also recruited Justin Field's transfer.  Unless his recruits are thugs and gets him in trouble, there will be no falloff.  Plus, he nabbed Mattison who has really turned around OSU's defense.  They might be better than under Meyer.

"... benefitting off from ..."

Ow -- my eyes!

OP seems to be suggesting that there was some "recruiting dominance" going on during the RichRod years. He got some good players, but the black cloud descended quickly and was pretty much in place by the '10 class.

To the question of a stacked deck, of course Day is benefitting. Only an idiot could screw that team up.

Ryan Day having a Brady Hoke like first season, benefitting [sic] off from Urban Meyer’s

Ryan Day is a darn good coach groomed for the job by Urban and this season reflects Day's accomplishments as the head coach.

Which simply shows OSU had their stuff together in maintaining the program.  Something Bill Martin failed miserably at in the coaching search which gave us RR and then Dave Brandon's meddling later.

Your take is fucking stupid.

Had Ryan day not been on this staff when he was hired then mayb I’d agree with you but lots of the recruits that Urbz got was because of Ryan day he’s an excellent recruiter. Regardless we have to win the game this year

So far Ryan Day seems pretty damn good. He knows how to run an offense so I’m not seeing the Hoke comparison. Guess you never know but I don’t see the recruiting bottoming out anytime soon.

Think of it like Star Wars, episode IV, when the alliance pilots are meeting with the commanders to figure out if the Death Star has any weaknesses. Luke says, "It's like shooting womprats back home." Same exact thing. Seemingly weaker opponent figures out how to exploit evil empire's weaknesses.

To answer your question, yes, of course he's a good coach. Doesn't mean he's going to win on Saturday.

Ryan Day is just a great coach, and -- for the first time in the past 20 or so years -- Ohio State has a coach that I don't completely detest on a personal level. I mean, what can you say?

Have to say Day made some odd coaching decisions vs Penn State.  The guy just might not be a Svengali...we shall see Saturday.  They have more talent than we do and Harbaugh has never beat a team. ..at M... he shouldn't have...hope this one breaks the trend.   The key to winning is whether our Oline can keep the dogs off Shea so he has time to make good decisions.

The problem is recruiting and attention spans.

the 2020 osu class is looking like another top 4, which will compensate for any coaching deficiencies. Since Day already has the media, and subsequently future recruits, convinced that he is a playoff level coach, we will continue to struggle with osu.

Recruits and their families have very short attention spans. If Day takes OSU to the playoffs, recruits will continue to flock to OSU.

Urban is helping with recruiting at Osu now also. Look how smooth he is on tv right now - their going to keep killing it.

Hopefully Urban goes to Usc...

He is definitely taking advantage of what urban left behind. You will probably have to wait a season or 2 to find out what kind of coach he is for the long term. This Saturday will also be interesting. If the Wolverines win, that's self explanatory but if Day and the Buckeyes win? Where does Michigan go from there?
