I could see it being a Brady Hoke situation, where this is a job he's waited his whole life to have, but could end up bombing miserably because he's still Coach O.
But still. This is going to be fun.
November 26th, 2016 at 9:32 AM ^
This is their Brady Hoke hire. I don't doubt he'll be successful early on just like Hoke too. will he be able to sustain it? I do think he has earned the opportunity as opposed to being promoted from the Mountain West as a career 500-ish record.
November 26th, 2016 at 10:02 AM ^
He did not deserve a second chance at all. He is not a defensive guru. He is just a DL coach who "connects" with players. We know how that story ends.

Sure, he didn't have a good record at Ole Miss.
But he is 11-4 as an interim head coach at USC and Ole Miss. I get that those aren't necessarily his players, his system, his staff, etc., but in a couple bad situations (Kiffin, Miles firings), he did pretty well.
November 26th, 2016 at 10:58 AM ^
And also considering the players at both schools were ready to run through a wall for the guy as soon as he took over. If the kids love this guy, all it's going to take is the right situation and he could do it.

Gameday sign last trip down there: "We finally have a coach who doesn't talk funny." I guess that sums it up. Good luck Coach O I think your going to need it.

The crew down at the Iron Bowl made an interesting statement, which seems to make sense, and that is that if this is the case, then the OC hire is important, but more than that, it makes sense because Orgeron is pretty good at connecting with players, or so it seems to me as well.
Still, it is kind of anticlimactic for the firing of Les Miles to eventually result in the hiring of Ed Orgeron, but apparently that's where we are.
November 26th, 2016 at 9:05 AM ^
Coach O is a bayou vulture--he sniffs out the hot seats, and waits to seize his moment. And that moment is now.
He's a player's coach. And he's also a human muppet. It's a beautiful combination.
November 26th, 2016 at 10:00 AM ^
Such coaches do not win national titles. LSU is heading towards a dark period of football. Hiring Orgeron was a huge mistake.

He is in way over his head at LSU. He'll be fired within three years. I am confident of that.

Might as well switch to giving out stock tips if you're so certain about the future.
November 26th, 2016 at 9:04 AM ^
their mold, speaks the language, recruits well...but this seems like a no-win situation for him, no?
He takes over for Miles, a defensive guy, and losing 3-4 games a year with high expectations was not good enough. Say he does bring in Lane Kiffin, as rumored. Is Lane really that innovative, or is it just that with Bama's recruits he can do what he wants (Serious question, not sarcasm)?
They must have swung and missed on Herman and Jimbo.

Miles is not a defensive guy.
November 26th, 2016 at 10:13 AM ^
Before becoming a head coach, per Wikipedia he spent 2 years a GA at Michigan, 13 years as an offensive line coach at Colorado and then at Michigan, 3 years as offensive coordinator at Oklahoma State and 3 years as a tight ends coach at Dallas. He's never been a defensive coordinator or position coach.
Which does make it odd that many of his LSU teams had good defenses and questionable offenses, but it doesn't make him a defensive guru.
November 26th, 2016 at 10:25 AM ^
I should clarify my "defensive" comment. It seems that Miles was somewhat content playing old school (strong defense, run the ball). A big part of that was probably that they had a lot of quarterback issues as of late. But, it just seemed that Miles was always much more willing to take risks in the special teams game (fake punts and field goals) than he was on the offensive side.

He might be Hoke. Or he might be a guy with extensive experience coaching as a head guy and as an assistant at three mega programs.
And he's just way smarter than he was and will get the assistants he needs with a huge budget at his disposal.
Might be seeing it working at USC right now. And Helton had way less head coaching experience.

Looks like Clay Helton could stay on too.
I hate when interim coaches are retained...keeps the carousel from spinning at dizzying speeds. It's my favorite part of the offseason.
