OT: Queen Elizabeth's Health (UPDATE: Queen Elizabeth II Has Died At 96)

Submitted by VCavman24 on September 8th, 2022 at 12:04 PM

EDIT: Updating the existing thread - she has passed. I know some people won't care, but some of us do for various reasons - LSA

It is looking like this may be the end for Queen Elizabeth after 70 years.  Nearly all of her immediate family has flown up to see her in Balmoral Castle in Scotland, while Buckingham Palace says she is "comfortable."  The BBC newscasters have been wearing black, and they recently suspended their news programs until 6:00 p.m.  All of that put together seems to indicate this might be the end of her remarkable run.

I realize this might be way OT, but Queen Elizabeth is one of the most recognizable people in the world and has been monarch for almost all of our entire lives.  This seems like major enough news to warrant a post.

Your post reminds me so much of a line from A Bronx Tale (great movie, by the way)

“Mickey Mantle….is that what you’re upset about? Mickey Mantle makes $100,000 a year. Your father can’t pay the rent, why doesn’t he go ask Mickey Mantle for help? Mickey Mantle doesn’t care about you so why should you care about him? Nobody cares.”

Celebrities can be entertaining. They can be good people, too. But they don’t give a shit about any of us. So why should we care about them?

I'm not really a monarchist and some of my ancestors suffered under the British crown, but still, I'll be saddened at the end of an era.  She's been pretty much the ideal constitutional monarch, and has done it for 70 years.  Not sure Charles can fill her shoes.

People definitely have had different perspectives of her - and, I respect the various opinions.

This being said, I do believe she committed her life to serving the British people.  I believe her passing will impact several things - and, one the people of the UK need to address is the role of the monarchy in society and the world?

God save the Queen.

She has witnessed a lot in her life, been involved in significant points in world history. The one thing I want to know is she team Cade or team JJ?

Hope she gets better, but if not may she rest in peace.  She served her country well especially during WWII.

That being said, the whole concept of the British monarchy is just absolutely absurd! They have no real powers and their main duty is to attend opening ceremonies and ribbon cutting ceremonies.  There is a whole industry built around them and it is absolutely crazy why many English still follow them and care what happens in their daily lives.  I guess they are the original reality show for England.

I had a similar mindset until I watched The Crown shortly after the attempted coup. The intersection between the two was that ceremonial duties are sometimes necessary, and can be meaningful. I don't know that a monarch makes sense -- the Crown is pretty good at making it clear that the royal life lacks certain basic freedoms that the rest of us western humans take for granted, even as they wallow in absurdly extreme luxury -- but I do see a point to selecting an apolitical figure to serve these ceremonial and administrative roles that in the US we traditionally dump on political figures.

25 - agreed.  So much to say.  Her father - George VI and Winston Churchill - were the backbone of the resistance and fight against Germany in WWII.

However, I believe the Royal Family staying in London - helped keep the spirits of the British people up and provided inspiration.  Elizabeth, Margaret, and the Queen Mother - could easily have “ridden out the war” in the country.  Again, she served her country and her people - I can only wish other leaders around the globe learned lessons from her.

I'm not a big fan of the royal family, as people, or as an institution, but this is still a pretty remarkable moment. The sheer amount of institutional knowledge that she possesses is staggering, and the amount of history that she has had front row seats for is pretty incredible. From her service in WWII (she trained as a mechanic, and gave public appearances), to interacting with every British Prime Minster from Churchill onwards, the breakup of the British Empire, the entirety of the Cold War- the wealth of experience that she will be taking with her in itself is something that I feel is worth mourning.

An agreement was made in 2005, at the time of Charles and Camilla’s wedding, that she would not be known as queen but as princess consort — although once he is on the throne, Charles could change her title to queen if he wishes. More recently, however, in a statement marking the 70th anniversary of her accession to the throne in February, Queen Elizabeth II said she wanted Camilla to be known as queen consort when Charles becomes king. Charles thanked his mother, saying he was “deeply conscious of the honour” for his “darling” wife.

Things will be relatively drab until William and Kate become King and Queen.

She still did her job as a head of state within a day or two of dying. Impressive commitment. We can say what we want about the monarchy, but we wish we had leaders with such fortitude and integrity.
