OT: Queen Elizabeth's Health (UPDATE: Queen Elizabeth II Has Died At 96)

Submitted by VCavman24 on September 8th, 2022 at 12:04 PM

EDIT: Updating the existing thread - she has passed. I know some people won't care, but some of us do for various reasons - LSA

It is looking like this may be the end for Queen Elizabeth after 70 years.  Nearly all of her immediate family has flown up to see her in Balmoral Castle in Scotland, while Buckingham Palace says she is "comfortable."  The BBC newscasters have been wearing black, and they recently suspended their news programs until 6:00 p.m.  All of that put together seems to indicate this might be the end of her remarkable run.

I realize this might be way OT, but Queen Elizabeth is one of the most recognizable people in the world and has been monarch for almost all of our entire lives.  This seems like major enough news to warrant a post.

I hate to tell you this dude, but humans have been brutalizing each other for land since time immemorial. What the British did is no different from what any other empire did.

The wealth of the monarchy begins to form during the Norman Conquest. To engage in colonialism requires a level of wealth.  England acquired that in wars in Northwestern Europe, British Isles, and Ireland.

Reckoning with the reality that humans as a species are sons of bitches interferes with people’s need to feel morally superior to others.

The country literally exists because of her ancestors. It isn’t a stretch to say that England only exists because of the monarchy.

Monarchy plays a huge role in the formation of England politically and culturally.

Paying taxes to the government who in turns gives her money from the Crown Estates would be a bit weird.

Y'know--I don't feel hostility toward the old dear. But I do kinda marvel at the way people goober on royalty. I mean, we fought a revolution to get rid of that stuff. And British royalty--wealth built on slavery and quite a lot of killing, consequences that will echo right to the end--has become a huge money-making system that's also a huge suck on the economy. My English friends all dislike these people and my American friends tend to slobber; it's perplexing. I chalk some of it up to a mass media that sells sappy soap with it, but. . . while hating on these people is a waste of time, I'm perplexed that we can't bring a little more. . . awareness to the table sometimes. There may now be a serious movement to get out from under this king and queen business once and for all in England, and that could be a very healthy thing.

It actually isn’t a “huge drain”. The money they receive comes from the Crown Estates.

Furthermore, the wealth of almost all groups of people  in human history came from exploitation and violence. Even Marxists nations do so.

Pretending that the British are somehow unique is one of the great lies of our time. That and thinking capitalism started imperialism and colonialism.

Yes really. Why should we worship (or admire....)people who exploit regular folks to make a buck?

This country has been ruined by greed. We're witnessing the collapse of the United States because people like Zuckerberg or Bezos or Gates or name any other goddamn billionaire have spent decades buying politicians allowing them to exploit people so they can buy a 4th yacht.

So yeah eat the motherfuckers. Every last one of them.

Some of those wealthy people financed the start of my company whereby I was able to employ and provide a decent living to people.  Some of those wealthy people are helping to solve world problems because they have the means to do so.  Not all of them are saints, and not all of them are evil.  But the wholesale hate for rich people is getting ridiculous IMO.

I'm sure if you work extra hard someday you will be that wealthy too...

People's worship of the rich is fucking gross. If I build my wealth by breaking the backs of a billion people but I occasionally throw some of those hard earned dollar bux at something I feel is worthy that makes it all okay?

It doesn't and I feel sorry that you feel it is.
