OT: Pistons lose NBA-record 27th straight game

So as a die-hard Lions fan and casual but still supportive Detroit professional sports observer, this is… sad.

While I was just a young pup during the Bad Boys era and started really appreciating the Pistons during the ‘03-‘04 championship run with Billups, Rip, Ben, Sheed, and Tayshaun, it seems this team is not set up for success and hasn’t for a while.

My questions to the board:

Do you care that the Pistons have added to a major sports futility mark a la ‘08 Lions and ‘03 Tigers (AL loss record) or is there any silver lining knowing it can’t get worse from here?

What could or should be done short of selling this team from the current owners and starting from scratch?

Also what are your favorite moments from the franchise in general?

I would like to save the team some money and offer my services as Head Coach for half what the current guy makes per annum. I would, of course, change none of my lifestyle and not communicate with the team as before and am sure no one would notice but the team would save a few bucks. Win, win.

What sucks is that the 2024 Draft is figuring to be a poor one with no franchise changing players.  Looking at the top part of the mock drafts, there doesn't seem to be a player with a 3 point shot either.

Honestly Gores should sell this team. It's clear he's the main problem, especially with the news coming out that he's been making some decisions instead of Weaver, such as the hiring of Williams. If that's not going to happen, he needs to clean house, fire Tellum and Weaver, and don't interfere with the next GM. I'm too young to remember the Bad Boy Pistons, but I remember the Going to Work team growing up. This current team is a joke.

Time to move on from Weaver. He's put together a roster full of pieces that don't fit. His trades are head scratchers. His draft history isn't looking great. Coach has too much money left to get canned but time for Troy to go.

In 2003-2004, that Pistons squad held opponents under 70!! points 11 times that season including a stretch of 5 consecutive games where their opponents were held under 70 points.

61,65,65,66,66,66,66,68,68,69,69

Those are legit halftime team total points these days.

I am confident in saying that you will never see that again. EVER.

I stopped watching when the "Going to Work" Pistons were biased out of the playoffs against "The Savior" LeBron with his 4 step bunny hop and phantom continuation fouls as Rasheed dove away from him 4 feet away. Never gone back and never going to. Globetrotter non-Team basketball that is a three point shooting contest interrupted by a dunk contest while everybody steps back and watches makes me sick.

That's okay, there are many other things to move on with in life and David Stern lead me there.

My NBA education was started in HS watching Sheed and Rip and the Bad Boys II. Chauncey Bil Bil Billups! Man they were good to watch back when you could play D.

Pistons had an unreal streak of ECF appearances with Flip Saunders and Larry Brown. I remember pulling hard for them those days. They gave LeBron trouble before LeBron finally beat them (mad over that) and then the Celtics beat them. Soon after Billups left, they traded for AI didn't they? And shit went off the rails. League stepped in eventually and declared a mandate that you needed freedom of movement opening up the offensive game, so the Pistons Bad Boy basketball style fell by the wayside.

I stopped following the NBA for several years after that. I live in DC so I'm a Wizards fan and they are naturally bad by default, but seeing the Pistons this bad also makes me very sad especially with how much they meant to me growing up in the DC area listening to Blaha on the internet describe the action. "4 and 30 to go."

I'm only starting to follow the NBA again and yes I was even watching last night on Bally's Detroit (Blaha not doing the game?) but last night's game made me sad. Even after seeing the Pistons storm out to that big lead and seeing the Nets claw back. I don't know what the fuck is going on with them anymore man the fans want Gores fired but is he the problem? Maybe this is just "The Process", maybe they are just a young team in desperate rebuilding mode, and bad teams in the NBA stay bad.

Whats funny is that the Pistons are getting more recognition now than they have in the past 10+ years combined.

I am rooting for the streak to hit 30 or more, and with the way teams are playing them of late like its game 7 of the finals (since none want to be the team that breaks the streak), this could go on for a while.

They do have a few somewhat winnable games with Toronto (absolutely terrible of late), Houston, and Utah all up after tomorrow's game against Boston, but if they were to lose all 4 of these games, they are probably looking at 7 more consecutive losses before heading into the (quite winnable) San Antonio game on 1/10. That would push their streak to 34 by then.

Truly remarkable.

That said, this team when healthy isnt too far from being alright - but the pieces will need to be adjusted because the young guys being drafted are simply not real shooting threats:

  • Ausar Thompson
    • He is good but very raw and can't shoot well, but will likely become serviceable offensive players with excellent defense.
  • Cade Cunningham
    • He is going to be great but needs more shooters around him...to compliment his game.
  • Jalen Duren
    • Tons of potential still, but needs to at least become a passing threat if he never turns into a shooter or shows ability to stretch the floor even a bit.
    • Best bet is that he turns into a screening/passing big with defensive/rebounding skills like Steven Adams.

The To-Dos

  • Trade Jaden Ivey For Picks/Expirings
    • He is likely the odd man out and will need to be traded unless he accepts being a super 6th man.
    • If he need to be moved, send him to a team with shooting that is needing a slasher...like a Dallas or New Orleans. Or send him to Memphis for their first rounder. They are desperate for a PG to backup Ja since Rose is basically done in the NBA and Marcus Smart is a rental + his mom was an assistant there.
  • Trade Bojan Bogdonovic For Picks/Expirings
    • He is getting long in the tooth and will never be a part of any long-term plans and thus needs to be traded to a contender.
    • You could get some good expirings/picks for him if a contender needs more shooting power for the playoffs, and those expirings could either help lure a big FA with tons of cap space or be used as fodder for another trade down the road. Once again, a team like Memphis could use a guy like that to create more spacing for Ja to operate.
  • Use Picks/Expirings From Trades To Get Veteran Shooters Via Free Agency/Trades
    • Ausar/Cade/Jalen are your core of 2 way players who can stay and drive the Piston's engine (no pun intended). Now go all out and get veteran shooting talent to surround these guys.
      • Potential Trade Targets
        • Trey Murphy III - Young veteran 3 point sniper with size
        • Cameron Johnson - Young veteran 3 point sniper with size
        • Tim Hardaway Jr - Solid super 6th man or fringe starter
      • FA Targets (could be S&T targets too)
        • Pascal Siakam - Undersized 8-year PF with great defense and fairly solid from 3 usually
        • OG Anunoby - tweener SG/SF/PF with decent 3 point shot and elite defense
        • Jonas Valanciunas - Not an exciting player, but a vet who can rebound and gets lots of easy points + has some 3 point skills for a big
    • Of these guys, getting even 2 of them + then getting some more low level guys to surround them with makes the Pistons a potential playoff team very fast.
