OT: Oxford High School shooting
I know it isn't OT season, and not intended on bringing the mood down on an EPIC Thanksgiving weekend. With that said, I'd have to assume that with how big MGoblog is, there has to be some Oxford people on here. Hopefully your family is safe and sound at home. To the one's that lost their lives, and the one's still fighting for it, my thoughts are with you.
I'm not from there, but it's not too far from where I grew up. My wife is a school employee where we're at now, so it's kinda close to home in a sense.

My in laws just bought a house there last year, they have lots of neighbors with kids that age. Just super, super sad all around. Wishing the survivors a speedy recovery and the victims' families solace.

If this is true, the admins and district will be in deeeeeeeeep shit. They are gonna get their pants sued off. And they will be living with this for the rest of their days.
god help those in oxford MI

Governmental immunity probably prevents that
November 30th, 2021 at 7:36 PM ^
Individual administrators might have some sort of immunity, but the district sure doesn't.

Most recent reports indicating that deer head incident was a different student and unrelated (at least as far as can be discerned at this point). Granted, the could conceivably be a reflexive response to say that.
Just horribly, horribly tragic.

Yeah, just saw that, will edit my post to remove that comment.

If that is true then it's just absolutely ridiculous that they'd brush aside such obvious deranged behavior. That HS is a giant school, I'm sure they have all types of problems daily, but what you've described crosses the line from dumb teen to disturbed individual. There's as-yet unsubstantiated reports of the shooter posting threats on social media, too.
November 30th, 2021 at 9:03 PM ^
There also are unsubstantiated reports that some knew that their kids were afraid and planned to skip school. I am wondering if this means that no one reported the threats to the school or the school knew and did nothing.

I’ve seen an Instagram page supposedly owned by the shooter. He wrote a cryptic message last night about being a destroyer of worlds and mentioned Oxford today specifically. the account could be fake but fwiw I saw it from someone in law enforcement who was accurate about a few other things before they were in the media.
November 30th, 2021 at 7:09 PM ^
There’s a tiktok video on myfox2 of the shooter pretending to be the sheriff to trick students into opening the doors. Very sick individual.

Mental health crisis needs to be addressed
November 30th, 2021 at 10:12 PM ^
My sister is in the mental health field. She loses sleep at night due to all the "issues" that people have. Social media does not help the situation because some of these people want and need the attention.
November 30th, 2021 at 7:12 PM ^
I read an article saying kids stayed home today because of numerous threats. You would think by now any threat would be taken seriously but it sounds like this was beyond that.
November 30th, 2021 at 7:19 PM ^
My family lives 9 miles away and my little brothers school (Lake Orion High School) as well as many other were all on lock down for this. There are rumors and alleged leaks of the shooter’s social media and if they are true he appears to be very deranged and unstable, terribly sad situation and a failure on multiple levels.

How does a 15 year old come into possession of a gun? A deranged 15 year old no less.
November 30th, 2021 at 7:39 PM ^
Literally everyone I know has at least one in their house, either for hunting or home protection, and I live in a pretty liberal area.
I think parents are often in serious denial when their kids are fucked up.

A few years ago, a 12 year old boy (who played baseball with my son), came home from school, said 'hi' to him mom, and went upstairs to shoot himself with dad's gun. Very sad...

There have been over 230 school shootings since Columbine. At this point the question should be why do adults continue to refuse to do anything about it.
November 30th, 2021 at 8:34 PM ^
Because, and I'm saying this as a gun owner, the NRA has conducted a decades long fear mongering campaign which has convinced many gun owners that having a gun locked and loaded and immediately accessible is more important than preventing unauthorized persons, including kids, from getting their hands on it.
November 30th, 2021 at 9:26 PM ^
If the Instagram account I saw was actually his, it was his gun. He posted pics of a 9mm Sig Sauer and then some shot up targets from his trips to the shooting range. I don’t know the exact answer to your question but IF this account is legit then it appears he was in possession of the gun for at least a few days and believed it to be his own.
November 30th, 2021 at 10:17 PM ^
Sig Sauer is a great system. I own a few of these. 9mm is on the light side but at close range, it is deadly.
November 30th, 2021 at 10:31 PM ^
The Detroit News reported that his father bought the gun four days ago.

I saw that. Imho they should charge the parents as an accessory. My wife is a teacher, so I understand how hard it is to get the psycho kids out of some schools. 100% of the time the parents are so deeply in denial their kid is crazy, they are probably qualify as crazy.
November 30th, 2021 at 10:16 PM ^
It is tough to keep a 15 year old isolated from anything. I own several guns and they are all locked up in a safe, then locked in a separate room. My hand guns are triple protected.
Parents are responsible for their children and their weapons. I hope they have Liability Protection because they will have to pay. Sad situation all around.
December 1st, 2021 at 10:32 AM ^
Honestly, I only hope they have liability protection so that as much money as possible can be drained from them and distributed to the victims and the school. If the parents were accessories in absolutely any fashion, I hope they pay both financially and with long, long, long jail time.

How do parents not know that their kid is in need of serious help? I mean this is beyond a run-of-the-mill troubled kid. This sounds like a psychopath.
November 30th, 2021 at 8:59 PM ^
This happens because there are a lot of parents who are neglectful, probably abusive (but not always), and definitely in denial about their child's behavior.
November 30th, 2021 at 9:17 PM ^
Which is incredibly tragic in itself.
December 1st, 2021 at 8:40 AM ^
The neglect and abuse thing is overblown from what I've heard. The parents are usually very involved, and usually enable the behavior.
Some schools don't help. A 5th grade teacher assistant at my wife's old school got thrown across the room by a student. She quit because of it, and the kid is still in school.

Not from Oxford but from a neighboring district. Just a terrible, terrible tragedy. My heart goes out to the victims, families, friends and anyone connected to the Oxford community.
This one really hit home as I put my (young) son to bed tonight, thinking about the families who won't get to say good night to their children anymore.
November 30th, 2021 at 7:41 PM ^
Pulled my twins out of Oxford when we moved to Ortonville. They have numerous friends still in the district. Their friends are ok, but how heartbreaking. As a high school teacher with 18-year-old kids, this really hit home.

We’re from Lake Orion (neighbor town next to Oxford). My younger son is a 9th grader and has friends at Oxford. He was texting his friend while he was barricaded in his classroom for a hour. 3 dead, currently 8 wounded. My son is shook up about this. We already have had several conversations this evening. Through his social media contacts he already knows who one of the victims is.
Many churches are currently having services and the school will be closed til Monday.
November 30th, 2021 at 9:28 PM ^
I’ve been lifelong friends with a teacher there. Fortunately he’s ok. Though I suspect there is a lot of healing from the trauma that a lot of people will need to do. My heart goes out to the victims and their families. So awful.

This is beside the point of this post, but the Oxford Wildcats have a few ties to college football and the NFL.
- Mike Lantry, Michigan kicker from 1971-74, graduated from Oxford in 1966.
- Zach Line, a 2008 Wildcat graduate, is the second-leading rusher in SMU Mustang history and played seven years in the NFL with the Minnesota Vikings and New Orleans Saints. He's currently Oxford's head football coach, having just completed his second season.
- Dave Rayner, former Michigan State kicker, is a 2001 Oxford graduate. His 62 career field goals are third-most in Spartan history. He is now on Line's staff, serving as his special teams coordinator.

Classic "User name checks out" post. Thank you to everyone for the well wishes. My understanding is that Michigan will be wearing a "TM 42" patch to honor Tate Myre. If you see me around town or at the game, I will be wearing Oxford Strong gear instead of the usual Michigan garb - still the right color scheme - but more appropriate to my mindset these days.

Welp how embarrassing. I guess that's why you preview before you" save". My wife ( sexpot). Texted me this and I took a screen shot to share
Anyways My uncle retired from Oxford fire department and worked part time at the high school. Cousins went to Oxford high school. This hit home. Kudos to Michigan for doing this!!
