OT: Neymar to Paris St Germain for $263 Million
Well I guess it's official now. PSG bought the rights to sign Brazilian forward Neymar from Barcelona for a world record fee of €222 ($263 million). This is more than double the previous world record transfer fee of €105 that Manchester United paid for the rights to sign Paul Pogba.
Personally I think this is way too much money for maybe the 3rd best player on Barcelona's team, but he is younger than Messi or Suarez. I wonder who Barcelona will bring in as a replacement? I've read they are considering Paulo Dybala from Juventus, Ousmane Dembele from Dortumund, or Killian Mbappe from Monaco (though Real Madrid is after him too). Should be interesting.

for Coutinho, as I'm a Liverpool supporter. We've said not for sale but that can change when the money goes crazy.
Apparently, they'll target Pulisic, possibly among others.
This would be bad for Pulisic, and by extension bad for the USMNT. If he goes to Barca he's on the bench versus the somewhat regular playing time he gets at Dortmund and his development will hit a wall.
Now if Barca want to buy him and immediately loan him out to keep playing on a first team on regular basis, by all means.
He is talking about Liverpool not Barca. Klopp the current manager of Liverpool was the coach at Dortmund when Pulisic was on the youth team.
Yea, you win on that point. That's the cost of reading quickly.
As one who loosely follows but doesn't totally understand World soccer, is that amount of money just between the teams or does Neymar get some/all? Does he now negotiate a contract with Paris? How the hell does this all work?

That's between the teams. He's already negotiated a contract for himself which is also huge.
Dembele needs to stay at Dortmund. I finally have a club team that I have actually become a fan of, and I want Dembele to stay there. The young core that BVB has is going to be great in a few years. Obviously, Dembele is a huge part of that.
Obligatory "Fuck Bayern"
I'm pretty sure that BVB is trying to become less of a seller and more of a team that pays the players they develop, and pays for talented youngsters. They did pay to bring in Dembele.
I don't think anyone there is satisfied with being 2nd to Bayern, even if they have a massive monetary advantage. Teams caught up to the Yankees as well.
what is wrong with Bayern ? I know little about soccer, but they are my favorite team.
I have an irrational hatred of Bayern due to them essentially being the NY Yankees of the Bundesliga. They have more money than any other club. They spend much more money than any other club. They essentially win the Bundesliga every summer during the transfer season by buying their competitors best players. Rooting for them is like rooting for the neighborhood rich kid in the "who's dad has more money" contest. Fuck Bayern.

Some of them might, but others are carrying massive debt.
Neymar going to PSG isn't going to help BVB hold on to him. I'm hoping he stays. Barca might make the godfather offer to get him though.
The mind boggling thing about this is this is more money than the combined salary of all the MLS teams!
I'm sure MLS would if it could. So it's not that being frugal is keeping the league from being the top in the world. It doesn't have the revenue potential to make anything near this size deal worth it, so no one in MLS will shell out this kind of money until that's the case.
Even if you replaced one for one La Liga teams with MLS teams, we wouldn't get the attendance or viewership to make it worth this kind of money. Not enough fans here in the states and not enough Europeans/other viewers would be willing to watch games in the middle of the night just to see elite players that don't play for their clubs.
It would have to be market driven but the market is slowly moving towards that. Might take one or two more generations to have the kind of support that the top European leagues do. Also would help to have elite American players to root for if you want to be a popular sport/league at home. I imagine we're slowly moving towards that too.
MLS recently rejected a 4 billion media rights deal. Part of their reasoning was that they cannot negotiate anything until 2021. Also the contract was contingent on instituting a promotion/relegation system. Gerber said that he doesn't think promotion/relegation is necessary in the US domestic soccer market.
That was a misleading article, MLS didn't really reject it per se, it just that MLS is contractually obligated to only negotiate with it's current list of media partners only. The terms didn't really matter.
Oh...
I'm still gonna hate on Dan Gerber.
Declining that seems like a poor move. But what do I know.
Don't want MLS to ever spend like that but if they want to be competitive with Europe they need to spend much more then they are now. Hopefully some day we will see them buying young talent in the range of 10-15m euros.
It is a transfer fee paid to the other club. His salary will be much less--about 28m per year, but still really high.
Hopefully FIFA & UEFA step in now and get these agent and 3rd party fee's under control. Should be a limit on release clauses, not sure what the magic number is though. As an AC Milan fan i'm hoping they target Dybala.
PSG will make their money back in 3 years due to increased merchandising sales (Neymar jerseys) and new advertising revenue.
Hopefully, this transfer will be the straw that broke the camel's back and bring some sanity to transfers, because obviously UEFAs financial 'fair play' rules are working so damn well.
Would hate to see Dembele leave Dortmund; they are such a fun team to watch.
Considering who owns PSG, I'm not sure if they even care if they make the money back.
That would suck to see Dembele leave.
The QNB on their sleeves is Qatar National Bank. They just print money.
doesn't really put a dent into the revenue.
Does Barcelona get that money or the player?
Barcelona is probably getting half at best, with the agent (Neymar's Father) and 3rd Party interests from Brazil getting a good portion as well.
Funny thats not whats being reported just about everywhere. Also you will never know exactly where all the money is going as the release clause details are undisclosed. Everyone assumes the way his Barcelona contract was written has his Neymars Father earning a pay day here. Yes Barcelona recieves the full amount but they are obligated to pay out the contract as it is written and by certain time frames.
Wasn't this buyout basically a termination of his contract? If that is the case would Barca still have to pay out the contract?
Well, I'm with you on most of this, but PSG is involved in the payment from the player to the club. PSG will pay Barca the transfer fee (really a contract termination fee) on behalf of Neymar, which will entitle Neymar to buyout his contract. And PSG is a third party.
Am I wrong on this?
