OT: Neymar to Paris St Germain for $263 Million

Submitted by Vengeful Barbarian on

Well I guess it's official now. PSG bought the rights to sign Brazilian forward Neymar from Barcelona for a world record fee of 222 ($263 million). This is more than double the previous world record transfer fee of 105 that Manchester United paid for the rights to sign Paul Pogba.

Personally I think this is way too much money for maybe the 3rd best player on Barcelona's team, but he is younger than Messi or Suarez. I wonder who Barcelona will bring in as a replacement? I've read they are considering Paulo Dybala from Juventus, Ousmane Dembele from Dortumund, or Killian Mbappe from Monaco (though Real Madrid is after him too). Should be interesting.

Sad to see him go. He is as talented a footballer I've seen except for Messi and Ronaldo. But he is also an immature and petulant little brat at times and had seriously hurt Barca because of it (got a red card in a must win game against Malaga last season that cost Barca the title) I hope Barca sign Dembele, even if they have to let him stay at Dortmund for the year. I would also really like to see Dybala, who is rumored to have a Barca-specific release clause in his contract. Beyond that, I wouldn't mind Coutinho but I don't think that will bear fruit. All in all I think Barca has a tough time replacing him in the short term but are eventually just as strong without him. I also think he has flame out potential given his propensity for night life and temper tantrums. But sour grapes and whatnot

This would be bad for Pulisic, and by extension bad for the USMNT. If he goes to Barca he's on the bench versus the somewhat regular playing time he gets at Dortmund and his development will hit a wall.

Now if Barca want to buy him and immediately loan him out to keep playing on a first team on regular basis, by all means.

Obligatory "Fuck Bayern"

I'm pretty sure that BVB is trying to become less of a seller and more of a team that pays the players they develop, and pays for talented youngsters. They did pay to bring in Dembele.

I don't think anyone there is satisfied with being 2nd to Bayern, even if they have a massive monetary advantage. Teams caught up to the Yankees as well.

I have an irrational hatred of Bayern due to them essentially being the NY Yankees of the Bundesliga. They have more money than any other club. They spend much more money than any other club. They essentially win the Bundesliga every summer during the transfer season by buying their competitors best players. Rooting for them is like rooting for the neighborhood rich kid in the "who's dad has more money" contest. Fuck Bayern.

I'm sure MLS would if it could.  So it's not that being frugal is keeping the league from being the top in the world.  It doesn't have the revenue potential to make anything near this size deal worth it, so no one in MLS will shell out this kind of money until that's the case.

Even if you replaced one for one La Liga teams with MLS teams, we wouldn't get the attendance or viewership to make it worth this kind of money.  Not enough fans here in the states and not enough Europeans/other viewers would be willing to watch games in the middle of the night just to see elite players that don't play for their clubs.

It would have to be market driven but the market is slowly moving towards that.  Might take one or two more generations to have the kind of support that the top European leagues do. Also would help to have elite American players to root for if you want to be a popular sport/league at home.  I imagine we're slowly moving towards that too.

Hopefully FIFA & UEFA step in now and get these agent and 3rd party fee's under control.  Should be a limit on release clauses, not sure what the magic number is though.  As an AC Milan fan i'm hoping they target Dybala.

PSG will make their money back in 3 years due to increased merchandising sales (Neymar jerseys) and new advertising revenue.

Hopefully, this transfer will be the straw that broke the camel's back and bring some sanity to transfers, because obviously UEFAs financial 'fair play' rules are working so damn well.

Would hate to see Dembele leave Dortmund; they are such a fun team to watch.

They've got deep pockets (to say the least) but they are trying to boost revenues. For one thing, they have to sort of look like they're conforming to FFP or face sanctions. They were hit with sanctions a couple years ago. They've been talking, among other things, of expanding PSG's stadium (the Parc des Princes), which only seats about 45,000. The expansion would be crazy-expensive (there is actually a highway running underneath the stadium at the moment, which might need to be re-routed) but they've got the cash to do that. Residents of that Paris neighborhood aren't thrilled with the idea, though...

Funny thats not whats being reported just about everywhere.  Also you will never know exactly where all the money is going as the release clause details are undisclosed.  Everyone assumes the way his Barcelona contract was written has his Neymars Father earning a pay day here.  Yes Barcelona recieves the full amount but they are obligated to pay out the contract as it is written and by certain time frames.
