OT: Nebraska Quarterback Recruiting (2024)

Submitted by Jordan2323 on December 11th, 2023 at 6:54 PM

All of the sudden Nebraska has crystal ball picks to land McCord from Ohio St and Wingdings just put in a flip pick for Dylan Raiola, the number one qb in the nation, from Georgia to Nebraska. Apparently I missed the appeal of the Nebraska offense this year when Michigan stomped them.

I read somewhere that he wanted to go somewhere that did not play OSU next year.

For what it's worth:

According to On3Sports' Pete Nakos, the current sentiment is that McCord won't want to transfer to a "lesser" Big Ten school. Additionally, he'd like to find a landing spot that prepares him for the NFL

"He does not want to be in a position where he plays Ohio State," Nakos said.

"Number two, it's all about development for the NFL."

I actually thought he was leaning toward the Huskers before he committed to Georgia.  He was originally an Ohio State commit before de-committing.

The family connections, NIL, an opportunity to revitalize a once great program and being coached by a former NFL Head Coach all make sense to me.

I mean Nebraska is definitely mediocre and will probably be his entire career there, but Kirby’s track record with QBs isn’t really great. I’m not sure if I’m a 5 star qb that I would want to go to Georgia.

Smart developed Fields well.  However, IIRC - wasn’t there a really toxic environment at Georgia?   After all, isn’t that why the NCAA allowed an immediate transfer & eligibility for Fields (to OSU).

The Georgia environment was SO bad & toxic that Fields sister remained enrolled as an athlete (at Georgia).

NJ… I should have noted my sarcasm.

The talent level / recruiting of stars at Bama, Georgia, and OSU is really incredible.

My hope is.. culture, development and a team focus are synergistic.  That combination can be more effective than a group of highly talented individuals who are not as effective as a team.

We’ll see examples of this in a few weeks.

Nebraska needs a QB.  Ruhle was complaining about he NIL costs for a QB.. and, suddenly, Nebraska signs two of the most highly regarded QBs of the last three classes via the Portal?

It sounds like the Huskers are investing significantly in NIL - or other things.

I remember Raiola's dad playing with the Lions. Doesn't feel like it was that long ago.

That being said, I think it's pretty obvious at this point that you're not going to get a highly rated QB for free anymore (fair question to ask - could you ever?). There's gotta be some money on the table, legacy or not.

I'm glad to see Nebraska back on the upswing. I don't know how far this will take them, but the B1G is more fun when its traditional power programs with large fanbases are doing well.

I can see Nebraska as a good fit for both McCord and raiola. McCord is a decent to good qb who was going to be supplanted by either brown or a transfer qb at OSU anyways. At Nebraska he’d be THE guy on a team that runs more of an nfl type offense. They have talent they just haven’t had a good qb or coach until this year.

As for raiola, the family connections are important as well as the idea of playing in a competitive conference and being the the main guy once McCord leaves. Again, they have talent they just haven’t had the coach that can use it well. Rhule seems like the guy who can get them moving towards the top of the conference even if they won’t quite get there because of the other top teams there already. At Georgia he would have had to truly compete for the starter position and their qb room is pretty loaded as it is.

If we want B1G supremacy in the expanded playoff era, we need more than 2 teams in the B1G. USC helps, Washington helps, Oregon helps. Adding FSU would help. PSU elevating a bit more would help. Nebraska returning to their glory days would help too. They started out well last year making a good hire. Getting a QB who doesn't explode when you look at him is a great next step too.

If Michigan continues to be the best team in a weak B1G, we will never actually be good enough to win the whole thing. If you ever want Michigan to turn into a Bama level program, you need the B1G to raise its quality and still have Michigan dominate an improved B1G.

4 HS teams and three prior decomittments, hopefully he can chose somewhere and get to work with all his talent. I heard a nebraska YouTuber saying he wants to go somewhere he won’t have to battle with top recruits every year,  hopefully not afraid of competition? He also said that he raises Nebraska’s floor to “over 8 wins easily” meaning he would project them at worst 9-3… not sure about thst
