OT: My house is officially divided
End of last week, we attended orientation, and my MGoDaughter got officially enrolled. She is now a Hawkeye. Move In date is set for late August.
The one saving grace is, she doesn't care about sports, so October's game won't be weird between us. I just get to be proud that she's going to a great school (and hopefully a world class medical school if/when she gets in). I'll probably encourage her to go to a football game or two, just to part of the "Iowa Wave" for the kids at the Children's Hospital.
Now to figure out how to pay for it....*shudder*
After her freshmen year at IUPUI my daughter sat down at the kitchen table with my wife and I and told us that she wanted to drop out of school and go to cosmetology school. She had done the research, and wanted to attend a top of the line Aveda school, not some strip mall beauty school. She was afraid we wouldn't approve.
I told her that as long as she is a productive member of society, I would be happy. She finished school in 18 months, hired into a great salon as an assistant and has worked her way up the ladder to senior stylist and is making pretty good money. And she was a lot happier than she was at IUPUI.
That's very interesting; and I wish these types of pathways were more widely known. It seems even if someone takes your daughter's path but finds out that cosmetology is not for them, they are still in a better place and can go back to school part-time while earning money (with renewed focus/motivation).
Utah 529 plan when they’re born, put a little in it every month and have relatives add to it for holidays and birthdays instead of toys. Reinvest the dividends and there could be enough in there to cover a couple years of college if not more ??
Iowa doesn't really bother me. They are an incredibly frustrating team to play, granted, as they seem to consistently find ways to slow the game down and make you play them on their level. A lot like MSU in that regard, but a much classier program. And playing them at Kinnick has been the bane of Michigan's existence for years. But I respect Iowa. Ferentz seems like a stand-up guy, and he's won his fair share of games there.
Ask me how I feel about Iowa after the Democratic Caucus.
Please don’t turn into this guy parked in front of me right now!
My BIL is a graduate of the Iowa Med School and a die hard Hawkeye fan-both forgivable offenses. FWIW, Ferentz is very under-rated...his kids play well-to their potential.
Time to paint her old room and bathroom completely blue, including the toilet. It's only fair.
Now do you go baby blue or navy blue?
Dealers choice. Baby blue would feel uncomfortable, navy would make everything hard to see.

Iowa is a good school and a fun game day environment. My dad was an Iowa fan! Hope your daughter enjoys it!
Eh, it's just Iowa.
Well, I guess it's time for me to admit I royally screwed up. My oldest daughter graduated from MSU in spring 2012. Michigan went 0-4 against them the four years she attended.
Just because your daughter goes to Iowa doesn’t mean that she’ll probably start rooting for them.
Plus you said it that she doesn’t really care about sports.
Congrats to your daughter by the way.
This would be wrong. She better root for Iowa. It's her school. You can root for your dad's school when they aren't playing yours, but you ALWAYS root for your own school. She needs to be her own person.
My daughter was born in A2, spent her whole life here, and was admitted to U-M.
She went to Wisconsin instead, largely because she liked their foreign study program.
She doesn’t give a shit about sports; the only time she saw Wisconsin play football was here in Ann Arbor.
I have no problem with Iowa actually love their program and root for them when not playing Michigan. I do however really dislike when Michigan is the away team vs Iowa.
I have it worse. My daughter is going to MSU in the fall. I had to listen to a bunch of "Go Green/Ho White" bullshit at orientation
How could you have allowed that to happen? Any of the directional schools would have been acceptable. Or WSU, or U of D, or Oakland U, or GVSU, or ... C'mong man!
First time hearing that "go green/ HO white" chant of theirs, I'm out of there immediately and so is my daughter!
I'm in Iowa now too- Go Hawks!
Not sure how much more patience I have being a part-time Hawks fan, though. Ferentz and McCaffrey are wearing me out. Plus, the fans have the strangest defeatist attitude towards their own team I've ever seen.
Iowa City is great, though!
Worse than the Michigan BPONE?
I see this like recruiting. If you're not going to go to Michigan why not go be warm for four years. California has a nice state school system
My wife is from Iowa, she went to school at UNI, but her brother and uncle were Hawkeyes. We started dating in 1985, the year Iowa was #1 and M was #2. One of our friends asked us if the game was going to cause any friction between us. My wife responded by saying she hoped Michigan would win so I would be in a better mood on Saturday night. That is when I realized I was dating a woman who did not care about sports. Unless it is running, she has run the Boston Marathon 5 times!
BTW - I was not in a good mood that night.
Congrats!
Literally?
Always like people who advanced themselves.
At least she’s not a Sparty. Amazing how many kids / families that I knew as Michigan fans over the years have switched over to the dark side due to admissions rejections.
I also know a few kids that retained their Michigan allegiance despite landing in east cesspool.
Easy decision... you're a parent... you should be cheering for your kids team!
Lack of good parenting skills?
