OT: MSU's Video Screens at Field Level

Submitted by wildbackdunesman on September 16th, 2019 at 9:59 PM

There has been comments on MGoBlog about MSU's ribbon of video screens above the stands that often flash bright colors when the visiting team has the ball in key situations.  Some describe it as seizure inducing.

Now MSU has a walls of video screens at field level - right in eyeline sight of players looking straight ahead.  MSU's players when on offense get to view a screen with stationary imagery and one that typically isn't bright.  ASU's players when on offense often had to view moving imagery and/or bright imagery.

Is this (1) just petty, (2) an unfair advantage, or (3) no big deal?  If it is no big deal, where is the line drawn with this sort of thing?  Can we get military grade spotlights and flash it across the field at Lewerke when he comes to town?

Husky stadium in Seattle, as some of you will see next year, has two ribbons of bright LED ad boards that circle the stadium. one at field level and one at the top of the lower bowl. Both are entirely fucking obnoxiously bright and I found them to be a significant distraction as a fan. I cannot imagine what it's like to play into them on the field.

Not every fucking thing has to be for sale.

But at least Husky stadium isn't blaring piped in music 2/3 of every break; they actually let the band(s) take complete care of non-playing fan entertainment.

Their stadium has been a cheesy mess for decades. They've got the same stupid DJ and/or DJ playlist used at the Joe since the 90s. Their use of advertisements for just about everything should be an antidote for any Michigan "fan" who says stadium ads aren't that big of a deal. And lest we forget the trash tornado?

This is all true to form. Same Old Sparty.

2) An unfair advantage.

I forgot what other college football game I was watching this season where the screens were low and flashing... the camera got a shot of what the quarterback was seeing and I was "how the fuck can they even play!"

I mean. . .NO ONE else on the internet appears to be talking about this. Officials were at the game and could have shut down any illegal tactics such as this. This thread is kind of batshit.

I was thinking an image with a sloth, riding a Unicorn, floating on a taco, while being surrounded by flying burritos...  And lasers and kittens of course...

Less imagery, more counting maybe?

(3) no big deal

There was a corny book I read years ago about what makes a fan(atic).  Their study concluded something similar.  It examined free throws and said that it was far more effective to have everyone wave to the left at the last second than wildly waving their hands back and forth.

Next will be a fiber optic turf field which is one giant video screen.

Sorry Shea you may have seen Tacopants there, but it was just MSU's field...

On a serious note I find it ugly tacky and disturbing.

Seems like an unfair advantage, particularly if they're static during MSU drives and MAX DISTRACT mode during opponent drives. Someone probably just needs to complain to a sympathetic ear at the NCAA and they'll get banned.

This reminds me though, I was at the MTSU game and I mentioned how it seemed really petty that Michigan plays artificial noise pre-snap when the away team is on offense and none when Michigan is on offense. Similar to this post. I think they should stop it.
