OT: Monday Night Football

Submitted by rob f on September 21st, 2020 at 8:03 PM

I just flipped channels moments ago in time to catch most of the opening comments on the Monday Night Football pregame show, didn't realize until now that this apparently is the 50th anniversary of the 1st MNF game ever.  Looking forward to a lot of video and audio clips of High Howard, Dandy Don, and Frank Gifford.

Cosell, as much as he was hated by many for his pompousness, was actually damn good.

Also looking forward to hopefully  being treated to a clip of Dandy Don singing "Turn out the lights..."

On a side note, this is also the first home game ever in Allegiant Stadium, new home of the vagabond Raiders.

They sure are. And there's a lot of them all across the country. I usually see a Lions game or two each season at Ford Field (yeah, I'm a glutton for punishment), and other than against the hated Cowboys and Bears, that was the one game where it seemed there were opposing fans everywhere, a shit-ton of fans wearing black and silver and their skull & crossbones logo.

OT:  is anybody else just sitting there pissed off that the lions could have hired Andy Reid.  Is andbody else just sitting there pissed off that the lions could have had Aaron Donald and Devin bush but hey we got two tight ends instead?  Is anybody else pissed off that this fucking clown show is still going???? We drafted a CB @ 3 who got dusted by a dude with 3 names this week.  We drafted a guy who was a healthy scratch in the 3rd round!  Wtf!!!! Fire everyyyyybbbboooodddyyyyy!!!!!! NOW!

They won't sell. This team is WCF's legacy. His membership in an exclusive business club (NFL owners) was the only thing that made him noteworthy other than his last name, the only thing that put on par with his more successful brother.

Now that he's gone, his widow and daughter are going to protect that legacy. Sure, they want the team to win. They'd love to raise some kind of championship banner to the rafters of the stadium that bears their name. But win or lose, they won't sell. Because to the Fords, the Detroit Lions are not a business venture. They are "Dad's Team." To sell them would be a betrayal to the Old Man, a rejection of the only thing that made him important.

Not gonna happen.

was that )( close to starting a 'who will be the lions next coach' thread today.  the lions allegedly set the record yesterday for losing 4 straight games where they had a double-digit lead in each.  great.  that team is so undisciplined and poorly coached that they couldn't beat a drum.  i see an 0-4 start at a minimum, probably worse and possibly a do-over of the 0-16 year.

so the question is:  who will be the next lion coach?  bonus question, when will patricia get canned?

When?  He’ll make it to the end of the season because the owner is spineless and knows nothing about this business.  When the cardinals drafted josh Rosen and the lions went 9-7 with Caldwell which franchise would you have chosen..... the lions... yet somehow, the cardinals drafted a qb in the first round and hired a new coach and then were like nah this ain’t it and dumped them and now have Kyler and cliff... were stuck with losers... LOSERS!  Sell the team Sheila!!!!! You’re out of your element Sheila!!!!! I am the walrus

i can so easily see the lions totally collapsing, meaning getting beaten by huge numbers and patricia being tossed before the season's over.

but my question remains:  who will be the next lions coach?  who would even want the job?  got to be a laughing stock at best, and a coach grave yard at worst, in the halls of the NFL.

Nobody.  Need to sell the team for a billion dollars and go home Sheila.  Let the next owner, and next gm hire a new coach.  Fire everybody now, bench stafford now and trade him.  If stafford plays we will win a game or two.  We need to win zero games and be able to draft Trevor Lawrence.  Maybe then we can get a coach

Knowing the Lions ownership's tendency repeat over and over their mistakes rather than learn from them, they'll hire another wet-behind-the-ears GM and the latest overrated hot flavor from Bill Belichick's staff as HC.

It’s not even the pats necessarily... it was the hot guy in the booth with Matt Millen, didn’t work.  It was the 49er way with mooch, didn’t work.  It was the hot guy who took the chargers to the super bowl in Bobby Ross, didn’t work.  It was The drunk guy Gary moeller WHO WOULD HAVE WORKED, but they ditched him.  It was Joey, it was kitna, it was stafford, it was Calvin, it’s always something except for new ownership.  We need new owners

I have told my Lions fans friends this multiple times here is what I would do.... Fire Quinntricia. Rehire Assistant GM of the 49ers Martin Mahew. Throw money at Robert Salah to come home. Trade Stafford to the Cowboys for picks. If what I believe will happen Lions will have pick 3-7 so either A. Group Lions and Cowboys picks to go get Lawrence or B. Keep the picks and take Fields, Trey Lance, or Jamie Newman. Take all those picks and only spend them on offensive line, defensive line, or linebackers with runningback like speed. Finally anyone that has Patriot affiliation will be loaded in a van and driven to New York where Joe Judge can have them for toll money.

I dont believe they are sold on Dak as a franchise QB. If anything looks like they are going the Cousins route with him and doing another franchise tag. Stafford is a 5000 yard passer and fits more into McCarthy's system. Granted if Dak leads them deep into the playoffs situation changes. There is always the Broncos, Raiders, Saints, and looks like Colts with how Rivers is playing.

Ah, the passion of youth. The last time the lions won a championship was Jim Brown’s rookie season.  And that was 7 years before they were bought by the Ford family. They have sucked and squandered talent for a long time, and letting hatered fester in my heart for that long would have diminished me as a person. I’m simply void of feelings.

i am reminded of a monday night football legend.  it was a late game scene with cosell and dandy don. one of the teams (houston?) was getting blown out and the camera panned the empty stadium and fixed on a lone fan who looked up at the camera and flipped the camera off, to which dandy done said, 'well, at least one fan still thinks the oilers are number one!'

I grew up watching MNF and still enjoy it although it certainly does have the lustre it once had. It used to be the premier football event every week. You stayed up late on a school night to watch it because it was special. It was always a big deal if your team was playing too. Now it's kind of ho hum and not as good as even the sunday night game.

Anyway I still watch because it's entertaining.

Yeah SNF took over as the premiere matchup for the week, but like you I remember back when MNF had that distinction. Back in the Madden and Summerall days. Those intros by Hank Williams always gave chills.

Seems like it goes SNF, MNF, and then whatever garbage matchup the NFL decides to throw out on Thursday, like the Jags against the Jets.

Bo v. Barry @ The Silverdome.  highest scoring first half of MNF.  fights all over the place.  i believe it was Aubrey Matthews that dropped a wide open TD bomb. i was sitting about 20 rows up in that end zone.  That crowd was electric.  i remember the walk of shame that the Leo’s fans often dejectedly made back out toward Opdyke.  Then i saw the Raider fan, beaten to a pulp, eye dotted, probably inebriated, handcuffed to a wheelchair that the Oakland County sheriff was wheeling out though the concourse.  what a night, i cant believe it’s been 30 years?!   now it’s an amazon warehouse.   S.O.L. Backward Down the Field.

Allegiant looks like a giant Roomba, which in its own way is strangely endearing as I never thought architecture would look to the self-propelled vacuum for inspiration. Of course, over in Atlanta, they have a stadium inspired by a rectum, so it just goes to show us that you can find your muse in anything.

They just gave a shout out to Keith Jackson for doing the first MNF broadcast. When do you think old Keith will hang em up?

i noticed her on that TD at the end of the 1 st half when the raiders receiver made a nice catch as he rolled out of the end zone.  she made no decision even though it was her call, happened right in front of her.  she kept her hands down and was trotting toward the other referee who was toward the back of the end zone and didn't have as good of a view.  sure seemed like she was looking at him with a 'did you see that?  did he score?' look.  would be curious about the details of that because they undoubtedly have referee film sessions.

Awesome stadium. Raiders still should have gone to LA, however. Rams and Raiders in LA, and the Chargers in San Diego. Perfection on the west coast.

The Killers at halftime was funny. They really got old, outside of Flowers.
