OT: Louisville pitcher with the f-bombs

Submitted by Wendyk5 on June 22nd, 2019 at 8:46 AM

I was listening to the game on the radio and heard the announcers talking about it, but seeing Luke Smith hurl some f-bombs at the Vandy player, and then seeing the crowd cheer, was -- I have to admit -- a little shocking to me. I don't know if I've ever seen that in a college game. I'm of the "Let Your Pitching Do The Talking" school.

The ESPN commentators said the same thing, which I'm not sure I agree with.

You don't think hitters on a team losing by one run heading in to the 9th inning (with a chance to go to a national championship series) are already giving it their all and doing absolutely anything they can to get on base/score a run?

If the pitcher didn't curse them out, what were they gonna do, just stand there, take 3 pitches and walk back to the dugout?

I've got no problem with it.  I love the fiery passion and think that people give too much power to curse words anyhow.  We've got bigger problems to worry about than if someone said a naughty word.  Fuck yah, go get em kid!

And I love it even more that he got hammered on!  That's what makes (college) sports fun.  The emotion, the twists, the pageantry, and the morning after!

Go blue!  Look out Vandy, our boys got something for you.

Only in baseball.  One day someone will charge the mound and teach that young man a lesson that his words have repercussions.

Saw it and while I love the passion, I don’t see a place for it in college sports, or any level of competition. Too many kids. I don’t think I’d want my grandkids replicating that “passion”.

Oh boy....you must not sit close to the football field during Michigan games. More F’s used than good jobs. Sports get emotional and emotional people use profanity’s. Unless your Don Brown then you use them constantly ?.

Yeah... we go to 2-3 games a year and only once can I remember someone dropping the F-bomb in front of kids/grandkids. And this guy was so loaded he could hardly walk. His wife finally walked him out.

Generally, we’ve found M fans to be respectful and decent.

Obviously, he broke one of baseball's "unwritten rules" with his potty mouth.

But being that the rules are unwritten, I don't know where to look it up.

I admit I did chuckle when Vandy knocked the punk out of the game in the 9th.  I was hoping for a closeup of Smith and Infante during the handshake line after the game, but I was denied. I'm glad Smith got the loss.

Is all the swearing we are seeing normal?  A catcher in our game calls someone a bitch, this guy dropping F-bombs. I would think an umpire could toss someone for unsportsmanlike conduct or something. I have seen players get a technical in basketball for dropping an F-bomb on the court.

He didn't toss out f-bombs out of the blue, the Vandy hitters were talking smack at him, also.  It was a back and forth action, as it always is.  But yeah, pitcher was rolling and should have just listened, smiled, tipped his cap, and said 'now sit the fuck down'.

He had it rolling - was in complete control of the entire Vandy lineup with a three hitter and a bunch of strikes.  It looked just like Henry's game against FSU!  But he let it attitude get the better of him, and missed 9 pitches in a row in the 9th.  He should have been pulled after the first walk and the next two balls (8 balls in a row at that point).  L'ville's manager tried to roll him a bit too long.

Karma caught him, rightfully so.

And Fuck Louisville for letting Vandy off the hook and giving them more time to rest up their pitching staff.

ehhhh.

Not a great look, but love the passion.

It's not surprising that in a tense, emotional situation, amped up by passion that words flew.

I doubt in football or basketball bad words are used.  Ha!

I’m not gonna say I loved it, but shit talking and swearing on the playing field is okay in my book. They aren’t in church or a library, this is what these kids work for all year and their ultimate dream, if they have emotion and an opponent is jawing at them, jaw right back. ESPN should be to blame from publicizing it so much, I don’t blame the kids.

Dude was over the top.  I am not a fan of players showing up the opposition, I think it just shows crappy sportsmanship.  But if people want to do it, fine, it’s their business.  But that kid looked like Roger Clemons back in his roid days when he threw the bat handle at Piazza, I believe.

Was watching when this happened.  They didn’t show the Vandy Player or bench ONCE.  There is no way to know what they were saying.  Announcers were very obviously pulling for Vandy, so their take was one-sided.  Also, when Louisville finally pulled Smith, the umps issued a warning to the Vandy dugout.  This tells me it was coming from both teams.  Also, if his talk was on-sided, he would have been tossed.  This is another case of ESPN creating a crisis for clicks.

Louisville players spit more than most.  Spitting is pretty damn disgusting and I noticed our guys don’t spit that much.

Now all we need to do is improve on the damn 1-4 streak in NCAA major sport titles going back to Fab Five-Duke.  Tired of Brides Maiding.

Love the pearl clutchers in this thread.  Maybe we forget when Darius Morris told the Spartans to GTFO his court.

Or when Novak had his aneurism and I believe a "Fuck" can be read from his lips.

If you’ve ever played baseball you know that the catcher is usually always jawing ...the Ump talks and the dugouts will banter. I never heard shit when at the plate ..nothing. But I sure as hell ran my mouth from CF or 2nd or wherever I was defensively.

This example of the L’ville pitcher just makes me want to bury Vandy even more.

Fuck Vanderbilt!

I don't care about swearing, dropping f-bombs, etc. It was the way he did it, with eye contact, and, in case you didn't hear it the first time, asshole, "Fuck. You." It was more directly adversarial than I'm used to. But my son tells me it happens every day in the game and they usually don't show it.
