OT - Last football free weekend...what are your plans?
This is the last weekend until February with no (meaningful) football. Anyone have fun plans? Wives/GF's taking advantage of the official end of summer? I think I'll be spending time with my girlfriend's new niece, watching chick flicks, and drinking whatever wine she told me that I like. Also, I expect to be in church and at brunch, somewhere in DC on Afternoon.

has snuck up on me. I'm now in a panic trying to find something to do.

I'll probably be doing what I'll be doing during the season as well. Actually, doing what every 23 year old bachelor should be doing - drunk in a Nashville bar singing karaoke!
August 20th, 2014 at 3:00 PM ^
Also spend some time with the wife cause next weekend is Michigan Football and fantasy draft!

Youth football season opener for my son's 5th grade team. I'm anxiously awaiting more than 2 forward passes all year from my son's team. Their manball attempts last year were met with...well...very mixed results (sound familiar?). Zone blocking scheme should help.

My cousin's kid played for grades 5-7 and I worked the chain gang most games. Beats doing lawn work or some other dumb crap around the house. It's fun to cheer when a kid actually manages to kick an XP or complete a pass. In three years, they only had one kickoff where the kicking team recovered the ball because the KR kid let it roll dead like it was a punt, so that's pretty good.

Even though I lamented the fact that they never threw the ball, I actually did enjoy watching them learn to run the ball. It's amazing how much they learned over the course of the season, and eventually had a few "go to" plays that could be relied upon to net them some yards. Who knows...they may even start pulling guards this year!
I also worked the chain gang or scoreboard most games. It kept me focused on the game in its entirety. Very cool to be involved during the young and innocent formative years. Huge props to the coaches for dedicating a large chunk of their late summer and fall to teaching these kids the fundamentals.

this weekend. then to see siblings at the cottage, one of whom lost is wife 2 months ago. will be a nice time to hang out and not have too many distractions as all of us are leaving our respective spouses and children home.

MIne was really last weekend due to work. I'm in Illinois and I took a driving trip up around Madison, checked out The House on the Rock, and then down the Mississippi.
Hated the game and the fans in Madison years back but a nice summer nite in Madison is really nice.
Due to the schedule this year that won't be my last weekend trip. I'll fit 2 more in I hope.

Big to do list to clear out that labor day weekend for a family wedding and of course football.
Yard Work
Running errands with the wife; store credit here, sale there, it's madness!
Fishing some wire for cable in the bedroom.
Bike ride on Sunday after church with the in-laws.
And, I just got my amateur radio operators license and my HT came in yesterday so I hope to be on the local repeaters soon.

I start my first college class on Monday and am rather terrified and intimidated.

eeeekkkkk
I remember going to my first class and was also like, "wtf did I get myself into?" It didn't help that my first class was accounting from 8:30 to 10:45 M, W, and F. I HATED accounting courses and had to take three of them for my major. I got one A and two Bs.

said that when you got that whore in Windsor.
That worked out didn't it? I mean she's still alive right?
You'll be fine.

State convention on Saturday (yeah I know, no politics. But I didn't say which parties' state convention, so there). However, the impeding birth of my daughter trumps everything, and very well may be what I'm doing this weekend (um...attending, not giving birth).

Proposing to my girlfriend in Leelanau Peninsula - any advice?
August 20th, 2014 at 3:20 PM ^
1. Breathe
2. "Shit or get off the pot" isn't a great way to propose (What Chris O'Donnell movie was that?)
3. Remember to breathe.
August 20th, 2014 at 3:23 PM ^
"So, you wanna get hitched?" is not a winner either. No more questions, please.

Women remember that shit forever, so make it special for her...even if you have to go full on Cheesey for it. My honest advice, do it in a somewhat isolated location where its very scenic. She'll remember the sights and sounds as much as anything.

Mine knew it was coming and as I stumbled through words I asked and she said yes, I asked if she wanted me to kneel.. the emphatic "YES!" that came out made me wish that I just got down on the knee and got the ring out.

The Sleeping Bear Dunes national lakeshore offers some fantastic places to pop the question.
Tactic 1: Hike with her past the crowded "Dune Climb" all the way to the lakeshore itself. It's a longer hike than you might think (especially going through sand), but if you make it to the lakeshore you'll find a pile of stones with messages written on them with charcoal. Write one up asking the question, or just ask her when you get there. A ten minute walk down the lakeshore will give you all the privacy you need. Caveat: If she says "no" it's gonna be a long walk back to the car.
Tactic 2: If that all seems like too much hiking or cheesy, then consider driving to the Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive - on the first half of the drive there are several areas to park, with boardwalks, trails, etc.
The backdrop of Lake Michigan with the dunes is really tough to beat. Good luck!

This hits the nail on the head! If I tried to take her on the dune climb, she might murder me before we got the lakeshore. Was looking for something similar, but the shorter version. Privacy was also a concern. We are renting a lake house in Omena for the weekend and both of our immediate families will be there. Was planning on pulling off somewhere on the way up to do it before we got to the lake house.
I was also considered getting it out of the way before we even left but I think thanks to everyone's replies, it will be best to find a spot on the way up. If anyone has any other specific short hikes/pull off spots with a view, I would appreciate the input. Thanks and sorry for hijacking the thread!

Glad to help. The "Lake Michigan Overlook" sounds like it might be right up your alley. Check THIS out, as it may help you plot your proposal. Don't be fooled by the picture - those boardwalks go on for a while, and should provide lots of places to ask for her hand and for pictures.
Again, best of luck.

Go with one of the ideas posted here. Then when she tells people how romantic you are you can admit you got the idea on MGOBLOG.
She will think that is so cool.....or maybe not.

Yeah - I will tell her that right after I tell her I got her diamond at a Discount! LOL. Afterall, this is the one place I can actually write something down and be confident she will not see it!
August 20th, 2014 at 4:27 PM ^
Whatever you do DON'T tell her you got the idea from a football blog. Good luck!

Free advice isn't worth much, and since I don't know your fiance, I'd be hard pressed to give any. I'll just say that I'm glad you're getting married, and I think that marriage is a great decision and marker of growing up. Congratulations! Also, statistically, married people have way more sex than singles, so you've got that to look forward to.
One last thing: try to avoid getting married on a Saturday any time from Labor Day weekend through the end of November. Just sayin'.
EDIT: So, I read through the other advice, and it sounds good. I don't know that area, but if there is a restaurant where the two of you can be together as the sun is going down on the Lake, that would really please some women. Also, if there is some element of surprise, that could be good. Lastly, it is worth considering the old tradition of asking her father. This honors her family and their input, and can get things started on the right foot with new in-laws.

You will soon be able to refer to her as "the wife" on MGoBlog!

finds a good thing and finds favor with the Lord.
marriage is great. choose wisely (hopefully she says 'yes'!), and go from there. i used the element of surprise when i asked. i totally faked out mgofiance (now 18+ years mgowife) by popping the question at Christmas dinner in front of the whole family. good thing she said 'yes' on that one.
