OT (Kinda): Hate for the enthusiastic unathletic looking white guy

Submitted by UMxWolverines on
I was just thinking about the whole Hitler thing with Wagner yesterday, and then I thought about how much the Sparties despised Novak similarly. Then I thought about much we all hated guys like Aaron Craft and John Diebler, and how the country has hated guys like Grayson Allen, Greg Paulus, JJ Reddick, and Christian Laettner. ESPN even did a segment where they showed some of the over the top stuff student sections were chanting at him or signs/shirts they made. https://youtu.be/ai4-auZ18MQ I'm just curious, where does everyone think this hate comes from? Is it because it's unusual to see white guys celebrate like they do? Is it because they're just average looking dudes that end up killing your team?

It's all attitude. Take Haaaaas for example; I don't feel an overwhelming current of dislike for the guy other than the fact that he's pretty much unstoppable at times and he's not on your team. But he's generally unassuming and just the kind of guy that goes to work without a lot of talk. If he was as chirpy as Wagner you'd probably think he was an asshole. Maybe it's just me, but I don't recall a great hatred for Craft except that he's a rival and had been around a long time. People generally want players to let their game do the talking but I don't necessarily think getting a few digs into the other team to burrow into their brain is necessarily a bad idea. Just know you're going to get a reputation that way and when you talk, they other guy talks back. I don't see it much differently regardless of race.

Craft a great deal. I do think it's fun to have villains; sometimes there's a share of cartoonishness in it (as with Laettner), sometimes a guy is demonstrably an asshole (as with Allen); they're not all cut from precisely the same cloth. (But both of those guys played for Snidely Whiplash, so there's that.) With a white guy you don't have top worry about some kind of racist connotations developing around it, so that kinda lets the full-on hatred gush forth. . . but I don't really think that stops most people nowadays (think of the Motor City Bad Boys, for example, or the rep that developed through time around MSU's bullying). Sure, there are staunchly racist people still out there, but it's kinda freeing to be able to hate on buttheads in truly ecumenical fashion.

I'm not sure these guys really look alike either. Laettner was kind of a pretty boy, and I'm sure lots of girls find Moe dishy; Allen's just a schmoe, that's true.

Watch the 30 for 30 about  Christian Laettner

Most people would have a whole new view of this guy,..i went from not liking him,to actually thinking hes a very good dude.

We just see a small part of the actual person ,these 30 for 30 (or similar shows) guve us a side to people we never knew existed ,

That you love to have on your team, but you would hate if he played anywhere else. He gets super hyped after he does anything positive (sometimes out of proportion), his enthusiastic play gets a little reckless at times, he whines after any foul call, the announcers love him, and, frankly, his face looks a little weird. I love the guy on our team, but I can see why he gets hate. Don’t think it has too much to do with skin color.

And speaking of enthusiastic white guys, I always hated that egotistical Notre Dame glory hound Rudy!!! Why didn’t he just shut up and play like that nice polite young man over at Oklahoma/Brian Bosworth?

How about the Davison kid on Wisconsin. I already don’t like the guy. But I think that’s because it seems like he plays basketball like he’s playing football (he was a prolific QB in high school). My first thought was that he was another Craft, could just be the white ess

There's a cognitive bias called "The Winner Effect", people subconsciously like winners. Think of all the LeBron fans who are not Clevland fans or Miami fans. Think of all the new Goldent State/Curry fans.

Conversely people disproportionately dislike minorities (not strictly in the racial sense here, but yes that too).

People are biased against the unfamiliar (actually a significant amount are not, but they are heavily negated by the other significant amount that are, and are vocal about it).

It's also easier to mock, and stereotypes coerce people into seeing things that aren't really there.

You're obviously athletic if you're playing professionally or Division 1. You're also obviously obnoxious if you play for the Lakers, Celtics, Bulls, Duke, OSU, MSU, PSU, or Notre Dame.

Frasier: As that famous prankster Santayana once said, "Those who do not learn from history are condemned to repeat it".

Woody: You got that right, Dr. Crane. Back in high school, I was condemned to repeat History three times. By the way, the same goes for Mathematics.

Saw a list of the 5 most hated athletes and just about all were black. I remember seeing TO, Ocho cinco, and of course Michael Vick-maybe Mayweather too. People hate the flashy cockiness but I think it makes the game more fun. It is just a game. Ali was probably the originator.

Generally white basketball players are much more subdued in their behavior and demeanor on the court. White folks don’t celebrate as outrageously as black players. So when a white guys do show outrageous emotion out there, it’s surprising to see. White fans don’t think white players should act like that. So fans lash out at them and develop “hatred” towards them.
