OT: Justin Tucker hits an NFL record 66 yard field goal to beat Detroit
September 26th, 2021 at 4:12 PM ^
Tom Dempsey II. Look it up if you don't know.
September 26th, 2021 at 5:42 PM ^
Old enough to have watched them both. Pure Lions.
September 27th, 2021 at 12:29 AM ^
I not only watched it but I also remember seeing Alex Karras (on Johnny Carson, I believe) talking about it. He said the Lions were all laughing at how ridiculous they thought it was that NO was going to try it instead of a Hail Mary. He said he was just trying to get off to the side so he would have a good view. (Probably just trying to be funny but it could be true.)
September 26th, 2021 at 5:48 PM ^
I also watched that Tom Depsey kick live at that time.
OH NO!! It's the curse of the Detroit Lions! It can only happen to Detroit.
September 26th, 2021 at 6:04 PM ^
At least this one didn't have a cheating flat half shoe!
Joking but not joking
September 26th, 2021 at 6:25 PM ^
It's deja vu all over again....
Watched Dempsey kick the 63 yarder back in 1970.
September 26th, 2021 at 7:52 PM ^
I watched Tom Dempsey kick that ball over the uprights in 1970, but fortunately I didn’t watch this new assault on the psyche of Lions fans.
September 26th, 2021 at 4:12 PM ^
Oh my God. To be a Lions fan!
September 26th, 2021 at 6:13 PM ^
Why would anyone do that? Friends don't let friends....
September 26th, 2021 at 4:12 PM ^
Totally cursed franchise - but should have been a delay of game by the Ravens the previous play.
September 26th, 2021 at 4:13 PM ^
I wondered how they got away with the delay of game call. Only thing I could think of was that the game clock and TV clock were not the same.
September 26th, 2021 at 4:20 PM ^
Boomer said it was delay of game. Phil Simms gave an explanation about referee mechanics that was not overly persuasive. Seratore concurred with Simms that the back judge has to see the zero on the clock and then to see if the ball was snapped. He also suggested that the Lions got a BJ by the BJ.
September 26th, 2021 at 4:34 PM ^
Looks like a blatant missed call to me, regardless of "referee mechanics".
HOWEVER, with Brown dropping 3 TD passes and Tucker missing a FG earlier in the game, it's tough to complain about Detroit getting a bad break.
FWIW, I also thought Detroit's time out before 4th and 19 was a mistake, giving Baltimore some more time to get set up. Baltimore was scrambling after Jackson was pushed OB on the Lions sideline on 3rd down for a 5-yard loss. The crowd was roaring. Why let the Ravens catch their breath?
September 27th, 2021 at 8:47 AM ^
And, obviously, if they don't allow the Ravens to convert the 4th and real long at the end, they win.
They had their chances. I am beyond feeling bad for anyone who allows themselves to get emotionally invested in this franchise.
September 27th, 2021 at 10:09 AM ^
It's 2021 and we're still relying on a human to see a field clock hit zero and then turn his eyes to the line of scrimmage to see if the ball has been snapped yet in order for a delay of game call to be made. Hard to believe but that is indeed the process.
September 26th, 2021 at 5:51 PM ^
Best of both worlds: the team gets the psychic benefits of what should have been a win against a playoff team, but still destined for the first overall pick.
September 26th, 2021 at 9:48 PM ^
To make use of the first pick in the draft, you have to have an organization with a pulse.
September 27th, 2021 at 4:23 PM ^
I've been boycotting the Lions since M&M v2 drafted Mike Williams tenth overall, marking three straight years of top-ten WRs. At this point, I'm willing to give the new front office the benefit of the doubt based on their first draft and the Stafford trade.
September 26th, 2021 at 5:52 PM ^
Give credit to the CBS post game panel for being all over that incident. They were correct but it doesn't matter at this point. Yet another reason why the Detroit Lion franchise is cursed.
September 26th, 2021 at 5:55 PM ^
Lions deserved to lose that game. Playing too conservative at the end hoping a field goal would win it. In the red zone try for a touchdown and put the game out of reach. When they played for a field goal I told my buddy they will leave too much time for Lamar and are going to lose on a last second field goal.
September 26th, 2021 at 6:22 PM ^
The Lions deserve to lose just for wearing those ugly boring gray uniforms
September 26th, 2021 at 6:44 PM ^
How dare you speak ill of their home pajamas!
September 26th, 2021 at 4:12 PM ^
I don't know if I have ever seen anything so Lionesque and I have seen plenty. Lions are restored to the glory of having given up the longest FG in NFL history.
September 26th, 2021 at 4:12 PM ^
Such a classic lions loss
September 26th, 2021 at 4:13 PM ^
The most Lions way to lose ever.
September 26th, 2021 at 4:55 PM ^
I remember a game back in 1981 or so, where the Lions came from behind to tie and force overtime, only to then allow the opening OT kickoff go for a TD. That would be my vote...I am not a Lions (or even NFL) fan, but I really felt sorry for my poor roommate, who was absolutely crushed.
September 26th, 2021 at 6:13 PM ^
I believe that was against the Bears on Thanksgiving. The Lions were up 17-3 going into the 4th.
September 26th, 2021 at 8:18 PM ^
No, the most lions way to lose is to win the coin flip in OT and elect to kick. There will never, ever be a more lions way to lose than that. But this is for sure on a top five list.
September 26th, 2021 at 4:13 PM ^
Can’t stop a 4th and 19. I’m still laughing.
September 26th, 2021 at 4:44 PM ^
You only rush 3 against Jackson?!
stupid. With 4 they were getting to him.
September 26th, 2021 at 4:13 PM ^
As soon as I saw the Lions were rushing 3 on that 4th down, I knew the Lions would lose. 100% I knew they would lose.
September 26th, 2021 at 4:37 PM ^
I started yelling at my TV when I saw the Lions switch to a three man rush. The 4 man rush was working so well.
September 26th, 2021 at 5:22 PM ^
I've always thought if you're only going to bring 3, just drop the pretenses and rush none. Drop 11 into coverage.
September 26th, 2021 at 4:13 PM ^
Only the Lions. Even as a [casual] fan, At this point it’s fun to watch them lose games in new ways.
September 26th, 2021 at 4:13 PM ^
Never ever rush three. You might as well rush zero.
Any coach that rushes three should be fired before the team gets to the lockers.
Beyond fucking stupid.
Shades of Colorado.
September 26th, 2021 at 4:20 PM ^
Completely agree, my dude. Exactly.
September 26th, 2021 at 4:35 PM ^
Too soon, man. Too soon.
September 26th, 2021 at 7:20 PM ^
I was at that game. Never seen anything like it. The stunned silence for maybe 20 minutes after the TD.
September 26th, 2021 at 4:13 PM ^
Am I the only one to notice that the Ravens should have gotten a delay of game penalty on the play before the field goal? It was at least 2 seconds past the expiration of the play clock before they snapped it. It would've made it a 71 yard field goal if the refs didn't screw the Lions over like they always do.
September 26th, 2021 at 4:18 PM ^
They absolutely should have, yes! But the Lions should have had one on their last play before taking the lead, too. (Not that it makes a difference...)
September 26th, 2021 at 7:03 PM ^
Only WWE fans still watch NFL games. It took me 20 years as a Lions fan to finally realize this and give up on watching a bunch of fixed NFL games. Nobody should know this better than Detroit fans.
September 26th, 2021 at 4:14 PM ^
That was the most Lions thing ever. Great kick by Tucker!
September 26th, 2021 at 4:14 PM ^
Nevermore. Quoth the Raven.
September 26th, 2021 at 4:14 PM ^
September 26th, 2021 at 4:15 PM ^
That was the most Lions thing I've ever seen smdh
September 26th, 2021 at 4:15 PM ^
LOL!!! Had this all typed up... Anyway, I called it - told the wife and kids that the Lions would let them move up for a long FG attempt to win, and it would be the most Lions way ever to lose a game. LMAO!!
Had them at 4th & 19 with 20 seconds left, and gave it up to midfield. Good Lord...
They played a good game, though, never quit on it.
September 26th, 2021 at 4:36 PM ^
What do you have typed up for Saturday in Madison? I'll still watch after you let us know.
September 26th, 2021 at 5:54 PM ^
Haha!! I had a board post typed up for the game but saw this one before I posted it. No need for multiple posts...
But since I did call the ending to my wife with 1:04 left, I'll say Michigan wins Saturday on the strength of its passing game and defense.
You saw it here first!!
September 26th, 2021 at 4:15 PM ^
Lions were impressive today. Organization seems to be going in a positive direction.
