OT: Indiana drops to 1-4 in Conference
Will the Indiana pick to win the conference end up being one of the worst in recent memory?
A sampling of Indiana predictions:
AP poll had them highest ranked B1G team at #13

“Media poll” has them first:

It's not much worse than the media poll picking us last season and the AP having us at #6.
Just like in football, preseason polls are meaningless.

Ah but Michigan started out 1-3 last year not 1-4.
But seriously, that prediction for Michigan seemed based in reality. Did the Indiana hype make any sense?

I think the hype was warranted. Jackson Davis when healthy is a beast. They had a great recruiting class and things looked up. But man they are woeful. But the conference is pretty woeful.

Since they’re title game in 01, they’ve only made it to the Sweet Sixteen 2 times. Same thing every year with IU, fans get their hopes up and get disappointed. My dad is a huge IU fan I see it all the time. He kept sending all the preseason picks/awards and sleeper final 4 articles about IU in a group chat with friends and I. Also talked about how they were gonna win the conference, we all said we’ll believe it when we see it. Last weekend we got into a hot debate about IU and now he’s changed his tune to IU is in a rebuild 😂.
(I know barstool is frowned upon but the meme is so accurate)

This is the triangle Lions's fans have been living for decades

5 decades in my case

One single playoff win since 1957. ONE! That's now 65 years!!

The lower left corner of the Lions no longer exists for me. I recommend others adopt the same Diangle. It made this season easy to “watch” (I don’t watch a lot of live action Lions anymore). It will also keep me grounded through this offseason and next season. For now, this season was just an interesting uptick in a somewhat regular cycle of creeping above 0.500 for a moment. Too bad there’s no Hard Knocks. That was awesome. EDIT: just noticed that none of the points apply to my very muted fandom of the Lions — not a diangle at all. No hopes up, no disappointment, no start to believe again. Gotta win a playoff game to bring me back.

You think that's crazy? There was a prediction for IU football to go 7-2 in conference in the 2021 season.

One analyst in November said Indiana was about as good a guess as any to win the B1G, so not exactly a strong endorsement.
And last year, there were many that felt Michigan's high ranking was based on potential, but not where they currently were as a team.

We did make the sweet sixteen last year.
As bad as we feel lately about our teams, and the basketball team struggle without a good guard or shooters, we haven't been terrible, and in fact, should have probably been in the final four the year before.

Wasn't that one of the responses from that tiktok where that kid asks BYU students their favorite swear words?

It's been a strange year in the B1G and it is still early. Illinois was also off to a slow start and big things were expected for them. We lost to CMU but were first in the B1G for a while.
I have not been watching but the injury to Race Thompson I would think would cause problems for them. While TJD gets the headlines, Thompson has always been more consistent.
I think we need to wait for the end of the season to draw conclusions.
January 12th, 2023 at 9:38 AM ^
Wait for the end of the season? That’s no fun.
January 12th, 2023 at 10:21 AM ^
They lost Xavier Johnson too.
January 12th, 2023 at 2:19 PM ^
This was huge. Lose two starters, one the point guard, both seniors, and with Jackson -Davis dealing with a back issue.... It's not pretty.

FIRE JUWAN. There are people in here that would love to have a different coach to draw up plays that have manifested the X's and O's without Martelli doing it all! Give us Wood(son).

Wait a second on that while we count tunnels.

They really need Chitwood to change his mind and play ball this season. That was a big loss.

Maybe Ollie can come off the bench and start knocking down some granny style free-throws.

To be fair, injuries to critical contributors have hampered Indiana. It's more bad early-season injury luck rather than poor prognosticating. But I'm OK calling it the worst prediction ever after a quarter of the season is completed. There's a chance that might age well.

Still plenty of time for a turnaround. I seem to remember Michigan being on the ropes in the 2010 season, being in ninth place well into January, and everyone wanted Beilein fired.
Then came the Aneurysm of Leadership, and just like that, Beilein's program went on a tear for the next decade, winning conference titles and tournament titles, making national title games, sending more than a fair share of players into the NBA, and being a cornerstone in college basketball of not just winning, but winning without a bunch of one and dones, paying under the table, etc. John Beilein's program, under that decade stretch from the 2010 season onward, was arguably the best program in America when it came to player development.
I'm digressing big time here, but my point is that I'm not writing Indiana off yet.
January 12th, 2023 at 10:19 AM ^
Digress away. I love having my ego stroked vicariously.
January 12th, 2023 at 12:13 PM ^
I won't write them off, but Mike Woodson does not have the track record John Beilein did.
(Woodson also turns 65 this spring. What an odd hire.)

11 Big Ten teams are all roughly the same, Purdue(good) Minnesota & Nebraska ( bad) the three exceptions..All 11 will have a bad stretch. So far Rutgers has been the most consistent. Rutgers has a transfer 6-4 guard named Spenser from Loyola,Maryland shooting 48% from three, including 2 game winners on the road.Im jealous.
January 12th, 2023 at 10:10 AM ^
Almost as bad as the preason AP football poll this past year - 15(!!!) teams ranked in the preseason were unranked in the final poll. That's just shows how terrible they are.
January 12th, 2023 at 10:20 AM ^
Never really saw Woodson as a great fit for college. Doesn't appear to have the energy/charisma to lead a big program.
January 12th, 2023 at 10:56 AM ^
I can't remember the last time the Big10's been this bad.
Outisde the Big10 ijn general basketball play's been lackluster IMO
Weird year

It couldn't happen to a nicer program.
January 12th, 2023 at 11:23 AM ^
... or a more reasonable, level-headed, calm set of fans.
January 12th, 2023 at 11:10 AM ^
They could still recover, the conference is bad. But I say that not knowing how long their injured players are out. If it's a long time, IU is toast.
January 12th, 2023 at 1:04 PM ^
They need to get new announcers at games, replace coaches, raze assembly hall and whatever building houses the AD, and start from scratch if they want to win in Bball and/or football.
Alternate plans involving MH or JB are strictly verboten.
