OT: Herm Edwards Learning the College Game? - ASU Under Investigation for Potential Recruiting Violations
The NCAA is investigating potential recruiting violations at Arizona State, Doug Haller and Bruce Feldman of The Athletic reported on Wednesday. At the forefront is the allegation that the football program "hosted high school prospects during the recent COVID-19 dead period," among other potential recruiting violations.
...
Unclear is to what degree coach Herm Edwards is involved in the school's investigation, though Thamel [of Yahoo Sports] reports that Edwards met with recruits during the 15-month-long dead period. His highest-ranking assistant, Antonio Pierce, would presumably be front and center as well. Pierce is the program's associate head coach/defensive coordinator/recruiting coordinator. Regardless, the allegations paint a picture of Arizona State not only ignoring the extended dead period, but flaunting it:
At least 30 players visited over a span of months. NCAA has "screenshots, receipts, pictures & emails."
Edwards has a very plausible case to plead ignorance..... perhaps that was his long game all along with every news conference he's given....
Imagine losing to Herm Edwards ASU at home. You'd have to be one historically inferior and inept football program to pull off something like that.
Imagine losing to a worse MSU team than that the following year. At home. An MSU team with a first year head coach fresh off losing to Rutgers with his team turning the ball over seven times.
You'd have to be one historically inferior and inept football program to pull off something like that.
Sorry man. I'm sure this makes me look like a Debbie Downer, but glass houses and all....
Sorry man. I'm sure this makes me look like a Debbie Downer,
No.
Your post is good.
Someone mocking ASU out of some faux superiority complex is laughable at best.
Michigan is in no position to mock anyone's football program right now. Either for on-field results or, as recent events have unfolded, off-field results either.

Don't care, will brazenly mock them til the end of days.
I guess I am in the minority to say this is unfortunate, and that am a fan of Edwards... what he did to the NY media was heroic, and the Jets were good with him.
Based on past NCAA investigations, Northern Arizona is in a world of trouble.
You play to win the game.
Or in this case, "You PAY to win the game".
Lol oh noz not recruiting violations.
Watch the pussy NCAA come down in them for this while ignoring the entire SEC for the 27383629629x time.
I don’t understand why the NCAA even pretends to give a shit. They don’t, and haven’t for dozens of years.
“The NCAA is investigating…” is the ultimate sign to stop paying attention.
Let’s prosecute the fuck out of parking tickets but ignore murder.
....but I thought everyone murders???
Wow. What the NCAA has done during the dead period should be investigated first!!!
Fuck the NCAA
Watch out for them devils.
You want parity in college, Drop the NCAA and regulate the league to everyone equally
Nobody wants parity in college football.
Is this a joke I'm unfamiliar with? Or are you saying that those who make money off of the game do not want parity? I think most casual fans would like a more even playing field.
This is discussed on Thamel’s newest podcast. It sounds like former staff, and a lot of it, can’t wait to get a call from the NCAA and spill their guts because of how they were treated.
As a Sun Devil myself, of course this is happening because being a Michigan fan hasn’t been a big enough kick in the teeth lately.
After years of watching bullshit stonewalling play out as programs skate, my alma mater has people that can’t wait to pick up the phone and cooperate.
Not mentioned above is the fact that somebody currently or very recently involved in Sun Devil football collected evidence and sent it to the NCAA. WTF?! FML
LOL!!! The NCAA is so fucking lax on 'recruiting violations' that even Herm fucking Edwards is cheating! This is the same guy that is so religiously pious that he refuses to call his own team by it's mascot name (Sun Devils).
I predict a big dustup on talk radio and lots of talk about the NCAA's stance, followed up by absolutely nothing for 1.5 years. It will all end with a missed bowl game that is irrelevant anyway because of a new 12-team playoff, and some 'stern' words about taking things seriously (delivered in legally polished phrasing designed to eliminate any possible future legal interpretations).
And yet Michigan will continue to stick it's nose high enough into the air to require a flashing red light. (Hmmm, maybe harsh penalties for hand-slap, first offense infractions actually has a deterrent effect?)
Fuck off, NCAA. Even Herm Edwards is flaunting your bullshit...
Really?
A dead period violation is getting all this news?!
SMH.
A friend of mine was out there recently with a kid being recruited by ASU and he said as soon as the story popped up, other PAC12 schools texted him the news lol
I’d say ASU is in trouble. Not big enough of a “too big to fail” college program to avoid major penalty....
If you ain't cheatin' you ain't tryin'
This is what's considered an NCAA violation these days? Sheesh, at least it's not as egregious as overzealous stretching practices.
It sure sounds like someone in the ASU "family" wants to get rid of Herm Edwards.
From the Thamel Article:
“illicit on-campus recruiting trips”; “deliberately, blatantly and consistently broke rules related to hosting players during the dead period”; “coaches bumped into recruits and families in a back stairwell and a routine developed of facility tours being given around 9 p.m. or 10 p.m. at night”; “a staff member parked a 12-person van in the staff parking lot to tour around recruits”
How Terrible. They met kids in a stairwell! There was a van which was used to show kids around campus!
This may be the dumbest scandal yet. Who gives a shit? Schools have paid players tens of thousands of dollars, given them cars & homes, given their parents jobs, covered up serious crimes committed by student athletes, made up fake classes for student athletes, graduated kids who could not read, provided women to underage recruits and much more. Most of this activity has gone unpunished or resulted with a slap on the wrist.
At most the NCAA should send a letter asking ASU to please respect the rules around visits in the future and move on. A better idea would be to not care when kids choose to visit campus and talk with a few coaches.
ASU is just one of those sports programs where cheating is just part of their athletic department
Well, at least they didn't try particularly hard to hide it.
He didn't get the memo that you can't get away with this. Unless you are an SEC school or OSU.
YOU PAY TO WIN THE GAME!
Edit: looks like someone already stole/butchered my joke. Posted this on Victors board right after the news dropped.

I'm getting to the point of just ignoring college football with how ridiculous the NCAA has become. It's lost all luster.
ASU has become my second favorite team as my kid starts her 2nd year there. Their team is exciting to watch and has some serious talent that's well coached. Unlike our games, ASU games are entertaining rather than frustrating to watch. Still planning on attending a couple of games this year as for me it's much easier to get to than A2.
Dare I say it, but this was their year to potentially win the Pac12 as picked by a lot of experts, and now this. Meanwhile, all of the BS and cheating continues at schools with REAL violations.
I've heard that Antonio Pierce has burned a number of bridges with his coaching staff. But it also wouldn't surprise me if other Pac12 schools were blowing the whistle. I guess that's fair game.
ASU games are fun af to attend and like you, ASU is one of those adopted teams for which I cheer.
I feel like certain teams who do it the right away should come together, form their own league, get a commissioner and enforce the rules you've put in place.
I realize this is impossible, but I think this year I might do my own rankings with just the teams that I at least think are clean. Just for fun.
I don't care.
Who can we raid off of their roster when they go on probation?
Harbaugh and the crew need to be on top of this. ASU has a grad transfer NT who would look nice in a winged helmet.
