OT: Favorite WWF Intercontinental Champion

Submitted by Eastside Maize on August 19th, 2022 at 9:16 AM

I wanted to kickoff the final week of OT with a WWF query. Who is your favorite WWF Intercontinental Champion?

The Honky Tonk Man: He held the IC belt longer than any single reign champ. (454 days)

The Ultimate Warrior: He ran roughshod over the competition.

Bret "The Hitman" Hart: Multi time WWF IC champ.

Macho Man Randy Savage: He took on all comers... and Miss Elizabeth didn't hurt.

Chris "Y2J" Jericho: Nobody has won the IC belt more times than Y2J.

I'm goin with the Macho Man! What say you?

First of all I agree, Mr. Perfect was the best IC champion in my opinion. His match against Bret Hart at Summerslam 91 was amazing. I would accept a few others as worthy of consideration: Randy Savage, Bret Hart, Razor Ramon and although not an all time great yet i am a big fan of the current champion Gunther/WALTER.

When i was a kid i went to see WWF at Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek. That night was the very first appearance of Ted DiBiase as the Million Dollar Man with Virgil. It was taped and shown the next weekend on TV.

DiBiase paid a lady $100 to wipe the sweat of his body post match with her body. Then gave a kid a $100 to remove his boot and kiss his sweaty foot.

Then he stiffed the kid and told him to get out of the ring. That kid turned out to be Rob VanDam.

Was the IC different than another belt?  and if so, what was the significance?

I am old, and was a fan of Andre, Big John Stud, and the Iron Shiek.

Randy "The Ram" Robinson was the all-time greatest.  Will never forget his epic battle against the Ayatollah in '87.  He brought that Ram Jam down like a hammer...

I haven't seen any pro wrestling since my HS days, but I always thought The British Bulldog was cool, making his entrance to 'Rule, Britannia!'.

I don't know if he ever held the title, but one of my favorites was Brutus 'The Barber' Beefcake. Who didn't love when he put someone in the sleeper hold and then cut their hair while they were still out? One of the great WWF shticks of all time, IMO.

Gotta go with Macho Man.

Best combination of physicality and schtick.

Hopefully our appreciation of Miss Elizabeth doesn't draw the ire of board moderators.

Taking into account all factors, persona, wrestling ability, storylines, style, significance, and belts held, Randy Macho Man Savage in the best WWF(E) wrestler of all time.

The correct answer is Macho Man.

Bret Hart was obviously great, but is (rightfully) better known for his World Titles. And he is, without a doubt, the best technical wrestler of all time. Just not the greatest on the mic.

Honky Tonk Man and Mr. Perfect were great heels who kept the belt in the spotlight.

Jericho is probably the most underrated and underappreciated WWF/E wrestler of all time.

Warrior was only fun when we were kids. With hindsight, we know he was a terrible wrestler, horrible on the mic, and ultimately a shitty dude.

Vince didn't care about the title over the last decade. I'm hoping Triple H brings it back to level of respect it deserves.

If I have to choose from the list I will go with Le Champion, Y2J, the last survivor of Stu Hart's dungeon, creator of the list, Chris Jericho.

Honorable mention to Jeff Hardy, Dean Ambrose/Jon Moxley, and Mr. Ass, Billy Gunn.

Macho Man was the best, and it's not close IMO.

Honky Tonk is underrated though.  He was a hell of a good heel.

(admittedly, this is all in the mid-1980s to early 2000s time frame.  I don't watch any longer)

Not the best maybe but my favorite was the Honkey Tonk Man. I have an uncle who is the hugest Elvis fan and every time he saw the HT Man he would lose his mind. Disrespecting the King. The Intercontinental Belt was one of the greatest hooks of all time.

Such fun back in those days. My children were just old enough to take wrestling serious. They were both little Hulkamaniacs. My first PVP was Wrestlemania III. Worth ever penny.
