OT: The early games - Iowa v Kentucky, and Bama v Kansas State

Submitted by Amazinblu on December 31st, 2022 at 10:06 AM

A lot of focus, rightfully so, on the CFP games this afternoon and evening.  There are two earlier games that many may watch before the game we’re most interested in kicks off.

Comments, thoughts, and perspectives on the other games: Iowa v  Kentucky, and Bama v Kansas State.

Enjoy…

I will root for Iowa and for KSU. I still think Iowa is such a struggle to watch, I hope they can win but I have my doubts that they will. I would like to see Bama lose because...well it's bama.

I learned the other day that if you miss a FG in the CFL, but the ball passes the end zone, you get a point.  I told my son, I can't believe Kirk Ferentz didn't leap to the CFL 20 years ago.  He could strangle teams by building his score one-by-one, just like in hockey or volleyball.  Imagine seeing a Toronto Argonauts victory box score with Kirk and Brian at the helm.  By quarter, it would be 0-3-0-0 = 3 for the visitors.  And 1-1-1-1 = 4 for the Ferentzes.  With them winning it late by kicking the ball past the end zone line.

A quick look reveals the following…

The Iowa v Kentucky game will cost about twice as much to get in to see as the Bama Sugar Bowl will.  Yes, an Iowa ticket will set you back just under $20.  While a Sugar Bowl ticket to watch Saban and the Tide can be had for $10.

And, it appears you could get a ticket for you and over twenty (20) of your friends to watch the Bama Sugar Bowl for the cost of a single ticket to see the Maize & Blue this afternoon.

Rooting for Alabama today, for the first time ever, because of Bryce Young and Will Anderson. I admire those two young guys, both projected to go in the top 5 of the draft, for not opting out and obviously believing that there are other important things in life besides just money and looking out for #1.

It’s a great day. I’m also a UK fan. So, watching the rivalry of UK and UL first and then the big game. Fortunately, one of the only two teams I focus are good. Let’s go Blue(s)!

Historically, the teams that want to be in bowl games win those bowl games.  The teams that don't want to be in bowl games don't win those games.

It happens over and over, including to Alabama in the past.

This definitely feels like one of those games.

Alabama only cares about the CFP, as evidenced by Saban's shameless lobbying for a CFP spot.  Since that did not work out, it's hard to see Alabama being excited by the alternative.

Really is. Also a little disappointing is their collective indifference towards the Fiesta Bowl. I can’t decide if it’s because they don’t think it’s going to be close, or their love of all things Georgia and Ohio state preclude anything beyond cursory mentions. Hell, their entire college crew is at the Peach bowl. I wonder if McDonough and Blackledge had to pay their own way to the broadcast

Maybe the Iowa-Kentucky game should just be decided by who has the most first downs?

And as I type that, Iowa's offense accidentally scores a touchdown in the second quarter. I guess that puts the game on ice.
