OT: On this date in 1978...

Woody Hayes punches Charlie Bauman in the throat at the Gator Bowl, an incident that would lead to his firing.

Today I discovered an SNL skit by Bill Murray and John Belushi about the incident that I had never seen before, not sure it would fly today.

This took place over a decade before I was born, old-timers, what memories do you have involving that infamous day?

I remember this well.  I was at a VERY large house party in Bloomfield Hills somewhere and absolutely high as a kite.  And I was one of the only people at this party watching the football game on a tiny black & white TV in some obscure corner of the house.   When Woody hit the dude I literally said to my self "that did not just happen.  I'm way too high."  And when they didnt show a replay I went to other people there at the party around the TV to see if anybody else saw what I thought I saw.  Nobody did.

This was pre-internet remember so no more was said or discussed on the incident that night and it wasnt till the following morning when Woody got fired that I realized that I DID see what I thought I saw (stoned or not) and felt somewhat validated.

The odd thing is there arent a lot of events that took place that year that I can say I recall with absolute clarity and fewer still I recall while under the influence of the devils lettuce.  But this was definitely one of them.

I was watching on a black and white TV at my grandparents very tiny cottage in northern Michigan. The reception was so bad with the old school rabbit ears antenna that it looked like snow was falling and the reception was wavy.  It is amazing how much I disliked Ohio State even as a young lad. My cousins were sledding and I was watching football. I was still young enough that people could do things that shocked me and that punch shocked me.

I don't remember watching the game.  I was enjoying my last high school Christmas break.  For you youngins out there, we called it a Christmas break because it happened at Christmas.

Vaguely remember watching the game and pulling for osu to lose. Woody punching the opposing teams player was so typical of his demeanor. Something bad happens on the field, take it out on someone/something else.

I was 13 and at my one and only Rose Bowl with my dad.  We took the official UM tour, so I believe we had just returned from the night that Bob Hope hosted the teams and saw the replay on the evening news.  Great trip except for the game, which most will remember as the one where Charles White fumbled at the 2-yard line while flying toward the end zone-and the refs decided "Meh, 2 yards is close enough" and awarded him the touchdown.  USC "Won" 17-10.   Let's make an epic list of UM getting screwed by refs and officials... Junior year at Michigan, home on break.

I remember being in denial.  NO ONE would do that.  I must have lost track of who was where.  And then they showed the replay and there was no mistake.

I am sorry but as much as I would delight in most any OSU failure that is so catastrophic that I still don't take any delight in seeing it.  Too much a personal failure and too much of a blocked artery.

And yes, OSU remains the safety net school of central Ohio.

I had a Clemson #58 Charlie Bauman jersey custom made many years ago.  In a world where it's incredibly painful to put up with Buckeye fans, that one always comes through for me.  Clemson jerseys are very commonplace down here in the Carolinas, but mine is unique and a conversation starter.

Also, on this day in 1957,the Lions won their last NFL Championship, defeating the Cleveland Browns 59-14 at Briggs Stadium. I watched it, as a young kid on Channel 6 WJIM TV out of Lansing, on a black and white TV. All Lion home games were blacked out in those days, sellout or not. I never dreamed I would be drawing social security  still waiting for another title. The 1957 title was their third in six years.

ALWAYS enjoy a championship when your team wins one.  They are hard to come by, no matter who you are.

All dynasties look eternal . . . until they're not.  The New England Patriots may have seen their last championship in our lifetimes.  (Unfortunately, so may have the Lions.)

I saw the game and was not sure what I was seeing when it happened.  It happened so fast and there was a lot of commotion around that play.  It was only after the game that it became a big deal when he got fired.

They were bitter rivals, but Bo had Woody's back.  He would maintain years later that Woody was on necessary meds and that's why he did it.

I was watching the game and noticed it live.  I said “WTF?  Did he just give that kid a forearm.”  IIRC, Ara Parseigan was one of the announcers doing the broadcast, and he missed it.  Then they showed the replay after the scuffle and he was totally incredulous at what he saw, kept mumbling something about “what did he just do!” or some such thing.  Even back then, I suspected Woody was done after that incident.  He had grown increasingly erratic, it seemed, and that was in fact the straw that broke the camel’s back.

I was home on Christmas break, so I was watching the game, because that's about all there was to do when I went home for break.  I saw Woody very clearly launch a punch and thought this might be the straw that breaks the camel's back.  Woody had been misbehaving pretty badly his last few years including punching an ABC cameraman during the '77 M-OSU game at Ann Arbor.  Not the best way to end his coaching career.

The Michigan Marching Band was in California for the Rose Bowl preparation. We had just played a concert at Knott's Berry Farm when we returned to our lodgings at the UCLA dorms. Some of us gathered in one of the student lounges to watch the end of the game. So we saw the end of the game--and the end of Woody.

I watched the game as a young lad at my grandmother’s house with family around. I saw it happen and thought it was glorious. A brawl between both teams ensued. I gathered others in the house who would be interested in seeing it, and we waited for a replay. They only showed one replay and didn’t show the punch. Keith Jackson and Ara Parsegian, who was the Al Kaline of football color broadcasting, didn’t see it or comment on it. So I had to convince everyone to keep watching the postgame highlights so they could see it happen.

I remember watching it and I said woody just hit that guy. The announcers acted like they didn’t know what happened and they wouldn’t show a replay of it.

I was a youngster.  My Dad and I were watching the game and we both jumped up off the couch laughing at OSU losing and Woody losing his shit.

I will never forget the look on his face and the look on mine as we both realized what this really meant.  We were sad.

Classic... Woody blamed the kid for showboating.  Rumor was it was not until Bo sat with Woody and fully explained the situation as it was did Woody take responsibility.

I graduated UM in 1978, so this game was at the absolute height of my fandom.  I remember seeing it and being totally shocked.  I honestly can’t even remember where I was or who I was with at the time, but I have a vivid memory of seeing the punch and being outraged  It’s like that punch is the only thing I remember from that day.

As someone else said, there was no internet and no way to review what happened until the news came out the next day.  When I heard Woody was fired I was so happy.
