OT: Chris Swanson, Michigan Man

I'm sure by now, many have seen the CNN and twitter videos of the Flint/Genesee County sheriff showing much-needed leadership amidst the law enforcement issues towards Black Americans in recent days.  Chris is a Michigan Man, Leader and Best.  We need more of this.

Flint Township. Big difference between Flint City and Township.

I just moved to Genesee County but I like this sheriff a lot. Also said he would not enforce the renewed stay at home order and is choosing to use the resources on more important things.

Yup absolutely right. There was a movement trying to change Flint Township’s name recently to Carman Hills.

Its funny because I worked up there a couple days a week before I even lived in the area. My work commutes used to be an hour from Utica to Flint Twp. Not anymore.

I have a lot more respect for the Genesee County sheriff than I do for Sheriff Dar Leaf of Barry County, who has become a bit of a celebrity of sorts on Fox News.

Leaf has been making public statements encouraging Barry Co. residents to defy Gov Whitmer's stay at home order and various other decisions Whitmer has made.  Then this past week, it was revealed that he has been almost exclusively working from home while he shoots off his mouth.

Given that, as of the most recent polling, 63% of Michiganders approve of her handling of the COVID crisis to date, there must be a LOT of outliers for that to be the case.  She does seem to be in touch with the median Michigander, at least.

Polls aren’t always correct. They DO have error margins. The error margin that would be required to make Whitmer unfavorable in a 51/49 split would be astronomical and approaching the point of statistical impossibility, and the argument would be made in the other direction that “polls aren’t always accurate.”

The fact is, most citizens approve of her handling. Whether you do or not, and whether you like it or not. Those are the facts.

Come on. even the Democrats are bashing her over the nursing homes calling an epic fail. Go over to bridgemi.com. Her policies have cost lots of lives. The dont even know what their counts are they are so screwed up.

She line item vetoed money to autistic children because one of the chairs has an autistic child because she did not get her 45 cent gas tax. She is an awful person.

There are plenty of accusing fingers that may be pointed in every direction here. You would have a point with your hateful complaints if you were not such an ardent defender of the leader of the federal government. The egregious errors are at the federal level and to argue otherwise is beyond ignorant. That the CDC did not, could not, were not allowed to direct a more cogent response to this matter remains at the center of any state errors. The fact is that, even today, there are many things  we do not know about this pandemic. The strident, uninformed voices that muddy these waters surely have not contributed any goodness to the whats and whys of this pandemic.

So you're saying MGoOld that a person can simultaneously hold both Whitmer and Trump to task? Astounding. I am amazed to read something where a person could actually engage in discriminating (word both appropriate and used entirely on purpose) thought. And here I was thinking it was four legs good two legs bad.

Timmaay you are certainly not one to bring this point. Literally, every post you make anymore is about the wrong opinion if it doesn't involve terminal lockdowns...calm down, see the light. Do people need to continue safety? yes. Is the virus affecting millions? Yes...but iron-fisted nonsense is NOT stopping it just in case you missed that memo. It's ironic, this OP talks about the sheriff in his effort to quell the riots, he demonstrates an understanding of his community and does what he needs to keep the peace...it's a novel concept. He went against conventional law enforcement policy which in this case was probably the best thing he could do. YOU fuckers YOU have to make every God damn post about chicken little drama and how this virus COULD kill everyone...fuck off. USE COMMON SENSE AND PRECAUTION. IT'S NOT DIFFICULT

I live in Las Vegas where covid has 392 deaths with 0 reported today n a population of 2.9 million. Michigan has 5223 deaths with 57 reported today n a population of 9.9 million. Do the math. The fist bump picture shows the sheriff without a mask. Now it becomes clearer as to why Michigan's numbers are so high.2 degrees from Michigan and little common sense.

Good point. However, when you look at population density of the major metropolitan areas they are far more similar. Las Vegas 4,376, Detroit 4,878. Also, a dated metric I found (2010) showed that 94% of Nevadans resided in metropolitan areas, as compared to Michigan at 74.6%. So Nevada's population density is impacted greatly by having more rural area.

Density? Las Vegas Metro is 2.3 million. Las Vegas avgs. 48 million tourists yearly. From January  till April Las Vegas avgs. 25 million tourist with 75% of the tourist in an area less than half of Manhattan. The strip n downtown areas are like having 3 Time Squares. Nevada went on lockdown 6 days b4 Michigan. This is the most important factor as to why Nevada hasn't been hit as hard.

If trump had been more worried about covid more so then his reelection the deaths would have been reduced exponentially

watching the video, he gets it, and the people around him get it. They were there to protest, and speak their minds, he had no issue with it, laid down his helmet and baton and MARCHED with them...to his credit, know your crowd, and community. To their credit, they were speaking out, not taking advantage and busting into the local target, Apple, Nike, etc to jack whatever shit they could. Good to see many examples of people and solid police departments doing their part.

I'd guess that was 50/50. The sheriff seems to have established good relations in the community thus the trust in his word. I'd also say, like most of the cities starting out, the citizens were simply there to protest, speak their mind, and show unity...not loot, not riot. Positive interaction with a positive sheriff made it possible.

So with 40 million people out of work and online school now out of session, exactly how long do you think these protests will last?

I mean, what else is there to do this summer?

Uhhh yeah the left is the only side out there protesting because the right apparently doesn’t care about police brutality?

I’d also clarify that the people looting and rioting are not the people who voted in establishment democrats imposing lockdowns like Whitmer, Cuomo, et al. These are the Bernie or Bust bro’s and black angry youth who didn’t show up to the polls in 2016 or 2020 primaries.
