OT: Brian Kelly says review is ruining the college game

Not that I am a Kelly fan, I hate the guy, but I think he has a point.

Kelly goes on a bit of a rant about how booth activated reviews are ruining the college game.  So many plays that should not be reviewed are, then we are left wondering why a play isn't reviewed.

I don't even like the 'all-scoring plays' are reviewed...so many times Michigan scores a TD and you can't celebrate till the review is processed.  Totally takes away the momentum for that scoring team.

I just think the college game should adopt the NFL version, only challenges come from the head coaches.

What do you guys think?

As long as Charles White still scored on that bullshit phantom touchdown for USC against Michigan in the 1979 Rose Bowl, I'll be in the reviews camp.  Also, I'm generally opposed to anything LSU's eggplant face suggests.

Brian Kelly, James Franklin, Ryan Day.

"If I only got one shot, one opportunity, to (punch each of them square in the face)...would I capture it? Or let it slip?"

This has to be my medal stand for most hated.

Kelly is Gold, Day is Silver...narrowly edged out by Kelly at the line, and Franklin is still the 3rd wheel...just like in the B1G East. Bronze for you, Frames, a clear body length behind Kelly and Day.

Meh. I don't think it's reviews ruining the game. It's inconvenient but I don't leave games complaining about how many reviews there were

What's ruining college football is schools and networks chasing the almighty dollar and packing these games with more, and more, and more, and more commercials plus the degradation of regional conferences which is also related to dollar chasing

Reviews should either be able to be done within 30 seconds with next to no impact to game flow, otherwise they should get a full two minutes, TV can go to commercial break, then skip a commercial break later. Seems like every pint and kickoff is followed by a commercial break. Would be nice if review time can displace some of those. any unclear after two minutes stands as called on the field.

Booth review is necessary, though, in order to process CashApp payments to officials in, say, the 21 MSU and 16 OSU games to make critical calls against us.

Mind you, I'm not trying to insinuate any impropriety by those officals, more like openly saying it.

What I don't understand is why we don't have technology help us out a bit more...

Put sensors at each end of the football. Install pressure sensitive mats underneath the field surface (similar technology is already utilized on basketball courts for analysis) to time when a knee or whatever touches the ground and use the sensors in the ball to pin point where it is located on the field.

Did the receiver step out of bounds? Lets see what the pressure sensors say! How about a sensitivity pressure at the crown of the helmet? Did the player make contact with that spot? Targeting! Did the ball ever touch the ground? Use a sensor to determine that.

We live in 2022. We don't need to use a chain tied to two sticks to determine a first down or a guy looking at a 10" screen with limited camera angles to determine calls.

He almost has a point and then be stays dumb shit like this

"Ten out of 10 times, the call stands on the field. Unless it's an LSU call, right?" Kelly said on his weekly radio show Thursday. "Or is it just me? I just don't think they like the guy from up north."

Yes, there are too many replays at times and it ruins the flow of games; I'd argue the 9 million ads that they cram into literally every nook and cranny is a bigger reason why games feel so jaggy.

I don't mind the reviews because college refs are not good at what they do and I'd rather prolong the game to make sure the calls are right than the other way around.  It's mind-boggling how much better NFL refs are than college refs.

Commercial breaks are ruining the game. Every damn week there is usually some sequence that is like timeout-commercial-touchdown-commercial-kickoff-commercial, and after like 15 minutes of mostly commercials you forgot what the hell was even going on in the game lol.

I am way more concerned with bias or corruption. I just want them to get it right.

Having a review helps with the blatant misses.

However having someone fair minded in the booth is key. I mean 7 for 7.

I'll be the Devil's Advocate hear and say I am glad they work to get it right. Full-time or part-time, it's really difficult for officials to see everything in real time.

I'd also be OK with it if they used the 60 seconds for a review to go for a quick TV commercial break (ONLY) if it could cut down on some of the loooong commercial breaks elsewhere.

The review system in college is perfect! Love having someone else be independent  buzzing down to review plays. Think having a “limit” on how many challenges a team can have(like the NFL) is silly.

Definitely ruined last year's game with Sharty where they went 7 for 7 on reviews, including the overturned strip sack fumble TD.  So bad the B1G even had to apologize to UM for shit officitating.

Really need to bury them this year, leave nothing to doubt, refs, fluke, or sharty shenanigans.

I used to be all aboard the “get it right” train and I was totally wrong. I hate review in all sports. I hate waiting after a really good (or really bad) play to see if it counts.  I hate the amateur Zapruder analysis of every frame by announcers and fans.  I hate that it’s given refs even less incentive to make the correct call on the field to the point that they hardly even try to bc they know review will save them. It’s a game, not a federal fucking case.

I think the system wherein anything can be challenged by a HC who is willing to risk a timeout largely self-regulates without dismissing the importance of an on-the-field call.

I'm not reading anyone's comments and I'm not reading BK's because there is only one correct way to feel about this.

All replay is bad and sports was better without it. However, I understand that the current era of television make it easier to see bad calls and people can't seem to live without it.

So if we are going to have it, then the only replays that should exist are coach challenges in all situations. I am flexible on how many a coach may have (provided it's pretty limited, like 2), the punishment for getting it wrong, and exactly what is reviewable, although I would err toward everything is reviewable. The review itself should be very brief. Not necessarily a strict time limit but if it requires 8 angles to be sure then let the call stand.

But really, the main thing is a coach challenge is all that should be allowed to instigate a review.

No to coach reviews. There should be a video ref who can quickly correct calls independently (or a small team). The review should take no more than a minute and there should be communication fluidly between the video room and the refs on the field. Game should move on with anything inconclusive (if it isn't obvious game should move on).

So in basketball, every time the ball is knocked out of bounds, does the game stop for 1 minute so the booth can review?

Or you are satisfied that the game only stops for review in the last two minutes because calls don't matter in the first half or with three minutes left in the game?

Coach challenges eliminate all that nonsense.
