OT: Bourbon Hunting Season…Any Finds!?

Submitted by Lakeyale13 on November 20th, 2023 at 6:20 PM

We are in the thick of all the heavy hitter releases for 2023.  What are you hunting for!?  What bottles have you snagged!? How does your state handle super allocated stuff?  Discuss!!!!

Michigan is not a good state for bourbon hunting. Liquor stores can charge whatever they want above state minimum. Consequently allocated/unicorn bottles are ridiculously marked up, like 300% or more. These bottles are never on the shelf and held for special customers. I find most of my special bottles while traveling or from an extremely special friend!!

Currently enjoying the limited edition Four Roses sampler box from said friend. They are so delicious,😋🥃

My wife and have been dabbling in bourbon lately, didn’t realize how smooth it could be. Looking forward to seeing what the experienced enthusiasts look for.

I don't go for wasting my money on crazy overpriced stuff that fanboys have turned into unicorns. Absolutely bonkers what the hype has done to some simply above-average bottles

I generally go for widely available but good for its price point stuff

like

Woodford Double Oaked

Rare Breed and 101

Old Forester 1920

Evan Williams Bonded

Four Roses Single Barrel

Rittenhouse Rye

I live in Elizabethtown, KY.  I'm about 45 minutes from most distilleries.  I've got some nice stuff but you'd be surprised how difficult it is to get the rarer stuff out here

Had some 2021 Old Forrester Birthday Bourbon this past weekend at a good friend’s house. Easily surpasses anything I currently own or have tried.
My go to is definitely Weller Full Proof, or if I’m trying to be more economical, Old Forrester 1920 with a single cube is a great pour.

Stopped being fun when I stopped being able to find Antique Collection anywhere close to MSRP.

I typically will find Elijah Craig Barrel Proof at MSRP a couple of times a year: Good enough for me.

Have two extreme rarities from a few years back: Bookers Rye and EH Taylor Cured Oak.

VA does a "lottery" for allocated stuff that is so obviously rigged. For the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection, some people miraculously "won" four different bottles.

Word got out that small groups of people were winning everything, so they "changed" the process. No doubt it will just be spread amongst a larger group of friends vs all to a select few.

Bunker is pretty full, so these days, my favorites these days are Four Roses SB OESV, Wild Turkey Father and Son, and a good Buffalo Trace store pick from a DC retailer.

latest purchases include Michters toasted barrel rye, Ancient Age 8yr, Wild Turkey Masters Keep Voyage & Rare Character 9 year cask proof barrel pick.  Was also lucky enough to hit a Stagg jr and a Blantons gold in PA's liquor lottery.

Not a bourbon drinker and I didn't see anything I could flip easily, so I didn't grab anything. But Nino Salvaggio in Troy had a few rarer bottles tonight if you are hunting.

So far this year I've only gotten a bottle of Stagg but the raffles I usually get in haven't happened yet.  Not anticipating I get anything great this year because last year I had crazy luck and got a bottle of Sazerac 18 in a raffle and then the week before Christmas I walked into the liquor store and they had a bottle of George T Stagg on the shelf.  Both were had for MSRP.

Some stuff that I will be on the lookout for this year if I'm lucky enough:

1. The obvious: BTAC, Pappys, King of Kentucky etc.

2. Thirteenth Colony Double Oak

3. EH Taylor Barrel Proof

4. Birthday Bourbon

5. Jack Daniels Coy Hill, 12 year, Twice Barreled etc

Georgia is not a lottery state. We're renovating, so haven't really hunted much compared to normal because we broke and have no place for extra bottles at the moment. Picked up a Gatsby reserve release for this year because I absolutely loved last year's release.

Not really a hunt for me, I just pick up what’s available. But I was recently gifted a bottle of Blanton's single barrel and tonight picked up a Baker’s 7 single barrel and a Rebel Cask strength. So into the holidays it is.
