I wasn’t aware slipknot put out a new album. I’ll check that out. Thanks!
December 6th, 2019 at 11:05 AM ^
Loved the new Slipknot. Nothing will ever compare to Iowa, but they have found a great mix of Corey Taylor’s very versatile vocal range. Excellent album.
December 6th, 2019 at 11:09 AM ^
Yeah, I don't want it to seem like I didn't like the album, I did. I just wish they wouldn't have compared it to Iowa so I could have judged it on its own, instead of instantly comparing it to one of my favorite albums of all time.
December 6th, 2019 at 10:35 AM ^
I've never heard of a single one of these artists
December 6th, 2019 at 10:42 AM ^
December 6th, 2019 at 10:44 AM ^
Just post some random words together then and see if anybody notices like...
”oh man I love that new single ’Forks Caption’ by Klyw1zz”
December 6th, 2019 at 10:59 AM ^
Reminds me of any beer thread where you could make up random names and no one would know you were bullshitting.
For example:
I really like Smith Road Beer Co. - Summertime Jamboree.
December 6th, 2019 at 11:18 AM ^
glad i'm not the only one. actually, i have heard of kygo, post malone and kanye, but beyond their actual names the rest of these suggestions might as well be written in mandarin chinese. some of them might be great, but without the music no way for me to tell...
December 6th, 2019 at 11:38 AM ^
You've never heard of Tool? I can understand most of them, but Tool has been around for 30 years.
December 6th, 2019 at 12:00 PM ^
Tool has been niche for thirty years. A popular niche, yes, but if you're not paying attention to that particular niche then you could easily miss them. They haven't been nearly inescapable in pop culture like Kanye for instance has been.
They also had a *long* wait between releases--more than a decade. That's an eternity in the music industry, especially if you're not old like I am.
December 6th, 2019 at 12:27 PM ^
i've been called a tool. does that count?
December 6th, 2019 at 12:53 PM ^
I wasn't gonna say anything, but...
December 6th, 2019 at 1:39 PM ^
no worries. i'm pretty thick-skinned.
December 6th, 2019 at 12:53 PM ^
I can give you most of them, but how has anyone not heard of tool at this point?
December 6th, 2019 at 10:37 AM ^
This reminds me - I've got to work on my list - I usually rank my top 50-100 singles. I used to rank my favorite albums, but I rarely listen to albums anymore. According to Spotify, I listened to Anteros more than any other band this year. They were definitely one of my favorite live shows of the year. black midi is listenable, but I think their live show is what really motivates people. I don't get The Black Pumas at all - I love one song by them but the rest of the songs blend together for me. They are like a really good band without any 'hit' songs. I need to check out that album by the Dots. Great stuff!
December 6th, 2019 at 10:37 AM ^
Bill Callahan - Shepherd in a Sheepskin Vest
Big Thief - Two Hands / U.F.O.F.
Nick Cave - Ghosteen
Brittany Howard - Jaime
Angel Olsen - All Mirrors
Denzel Curry - ZUU
Moodymann - Sinner
Freddie Gibbs and Madlib - Bandana
Danny Brown - uknowhatimsayin?
Thom Yorke - Anima

No idea if any of this is good since I haven't heard anything mentioned in this thread yet.
Which makes me old ...but it is not necessary to get off my lawn.
December 6th, 2019 at 10:41 AM ^
I was going to say Greta Van Fleet; but just realized their last album came out in '18. Damn.
December 6th, 2019 at 10:45 AM ^
Anything Tyler Childers,Turnpike Trubedours,Whiskey Myers,Blackberry Smoke
December 6th, 2019 at 11:25 AM ^
So I saw Blackberry Smoke this year for the first time. Huge pleasant surprise! Was concerned it would be too "country" for my liking, but they rocked.
Also got into Tyler Childers this year...really interesting stuff.
Turnpike on the other hand, are a disgrace. Many last minute cancellations of shows, including one I went to in Chicago only to find out it was off upon arriving at the venue. Sounds like a pattern, and it's possible the band leader needs help for substance abuse or something. Likely won't attempt to see them again soon.
December 6th, 2019 at 12:57 PM ^
Turnpike cancelled last minute in Shreveport,Stoney La rue was warm up.Still have never heard a bad song from them.Yellowstone on Paramount network got me hooked on Blackberry Smoke.
Bleu Edmonson rocks also if you like Red dirt music
December 6th, 2019 at 12:49 PM ^
If you like those bands. You should check out Billy Strings new album. Best flat pickin' guitar player around.
December 6th, 2019 at 10:51 AM ^
Old man mode: engage.
I don't like much current music. I'd rather find old stuff from the 80's and 90's that I didn't discover back then.
If I listen to new stuff now it's mostly Synthwave. There's a youtube channel called New Retro Wave if you like 80's synth type stuff.
December 6th, 2019 at 10:54 AM ^
I'm old too, but the music of the 80s sucked
December 6th, 2019 at 11:05 AM ^
80's music is outstanding. Especially when paired with cocaine.
8 ball, a bottle of Krug, and Depeche Mode? Yes please!
December 6th, 2019 at 11:02 AM ^
Chuckie Woodson
You heard the Night Drive record?
December 6th, 2019 at 10:51 AM ^
I have lately become totally hooked on Where the Gods are in Peace by Antibalas (in particular the track "Hook & Crook"). It was released in 2017, but hey, if you haven't heard it it's new to you.
December 6th, 2019 at 10:51 AM ^
Swans - Leaving Meaning
December 6th, 2019 at 10:57 AM ^
The National record is really cool too, forgot that one.
December 6th, 2019 at 11:01 AM ^
I absolutely loved the Yandhi leak and downloaded it off a YT video. It was a real down year for Hip-hop in my opinion so there really went much else I got into this year. Waiting for some new Kendrick...
December 6th, 2019 at 11:09 AM ^
Kenny G - Smooth Smooth Smooth (Edition 69)
December 6th, 2019 at 11:11 AM ^
What I have head of Highly Suspects new one has been good.
December 6th, 2019 at 12:56 PM ^
Doesn't do much of anything for me. It's good that they just didn't rehash their first 2 albums, but.... That's about the only thing positive I can say about it
December 6th, 2019 at 11:12 AM ^
Best new song of 2019, Misbehavin' by Aimee-Leigh Gemstone and Baby Billy Freeman:

Drive By Truckers has a new album out.
Cooley solo in Seattle last night was great.
There's a 4 disc Replacements reissue of some kind that came out this year. Dead Man's Pop.
All I got.

I've been obsessively listening to indie music on Spotify lately, having discovered some really great playlists that have introduced me to artists I'd never hear about otherwise (at least since I broke up with my college girlfriend who knew every obscure band that ever formed). So I have some effing recs here but warning that it's almost all indie rock (shrug).
Another warning: if you think you feel old looking at a list like this then don't look up how old some of these people are. I swear soon literal infants are going to be pumping out amazing indie music. At least 3 of the albums below are from kids around ages 18-20.
Albums:
Norman Fucking Rockwell! by Lana Del Rey
Violet Street by Local Natives
Invocations/Conversations by JR JR (Detroit's own!)
Heard It In a Past Life by Maggie Rogers
Better Oblivion Community Center (self-titled)
Space Cadet by Beabadoobee (ty spotify recommendations)
Immunity by Clairo (ditto)
i,i by Bon Iver
On the Line by Jenny Lewis
Father of the Bride by Vampire Weekend
EDIT: Forever Turned Around by Whitney
Fuzzybrain by Dayglow (especially the song Can I Call You Tonight?)
Songs:
Essentially by Japanese Breakfast (look up JBrekkie pls she's so goddamn good)
It Might Be Time by Tame Impala
For the First Time by Best Coast
Are You Bored Yet? by Wallows feat. Clairo (I think the whole album is good but only have listened once so I didn't put it up there)
Some others I'll have to look and update this if anyone is interested in this type of music.

Kevin you might dig soccer mommy if you haven't already heard her.
December 9th, 2019 at 12:42 PM ^
Hell yeah
December 6th, 2019 at 2:19 PM ^
I listen mostly to singles these days. It's hard for me to find a whole album I am excited about.
But I will add Gary Clark Jr. album "This Land".
The title track has a powerful music video about racism
"Pearl Cadillac" is a ballad to his mother in the style of Prince
"What about Us" is just a funky kick ass tune.
