OT: Beckman Investigation Report concludes...Beckman is an a-hole

Submitted by BroadShouldersBlue on

Illinois just released the full report. Prety awful. From Yahoo:

  • Beckman was found to have “repeatedly communicated with players in ways, both explicit and implicit, that had the effect of deterring them from sharing information with sports medicine staff about injuries” and “engaged in a pattern of criticizing and demeaning players for seeking evaluation by an athletic trainer during practice, promoting the idea of playing through injuries, belittling injuries, and encouraging players to minimize their injuries.”
  •  Beckman routinely using vulgarities toward injured players in practice, calling a player with a suspected concussion (who went on to miss the rest of the season) “scared,” yelling at a player to return to a practice drill when trainers “thought the player could have dislocated his hip,” and “habitually” telling players that he does not “believe in hamstring injuries.”

Yikes.

Like, what is an injury really... It's really an existential question of the mind feeling the pain, or the body not being able to function due to structural damage.  Everyone's reality is different, and we just find consensus to explain our very being.

Or...

He's really just an asshole.

Unrelated but sort of not, avoiding this type of jerk helped land us Kemp.  Note the diff btw our staff and the beat faced Irishmen who berates players and coached he was comparing our coaches against:

“Besides seeing 110,000 fans at the game it was definitely the family atmosphere from the coaches (and) how nice they are all of the time,” Kemp said describing what stood out most about his official visit earlier this fall..  “At practice they’re not yellers, they’re teachers.  They will yell like any other coach, but it’s not aggressive… it’s not harassment.  They just want you to be the best that you can be.  They’re teachers. They’ll break it down for you so you can get it right the next play.  When you do they’re all jumping (and) they’re all excited for you. It really just felt like a family.”

I really dislike the guy - but have I noticed a shift in his attitude somewhat? He's still a scowling, blustering twit . . . but this year he seems less so.

Or am I imagining it since we didn't play them?

I don't watch much ND but after his purple-faced first season things seem to have calmed down.  I wonder if he got some anger management counseling.  It would make sense as he's now representing a bigtime program or if he's having bigger aspirations.

I mean I get being tough and trying to playing thorugh being somewhat hurt, but an injury is an injury, especially a concussion, he got what he deserved and with this report I imagine he's going to have a tough time explaining it to a future prospective employer.

I was imagining Tim Beckman repeatedly and adamently telling people that he doesn't believe in hamstring injuries and couldn't stop laughing.

But then I read the part where he forced a player with a possible spinal cord injury to turn and look at him when the trainers said not to and got a little sick. That's seriously fucked up.

Why did it have to come from a player? It's really disgusting that none of the adults on that team stood up for the players. All of them should be fired after the season. Basic negligence.

They had multiple head trainers quit under Beckman. They might not have been leaking stories to the media, but I'll bet they talked to the AD.

Whistleblowers lose their careers in coaching. It's possible that a coach leaked something or encouraged a player to speak up. There were team doctors in a better position to go public, both in terms of job security and with more direct and expert knowledge. I'd blame them.

There was a time when asking for water during practice was considered a sign of weakness. That was a LOOOOONG tome ago. Tim Beckman just isn't a good college football coach.
