OT: Andre Drummond 19.4 RPG

Submitted by Champeen on November 5th, 2019 at 11:13 AM

He has 4 straight 20+ rebound games, (3 20/20's in a row before last night), 5 of his 8 games have been 20 rebounds or more, his lowest rebound total has been 12.  He is averaging 22.7 rebounds so far in the month of November.

Additionally, his FT% is up to 66.7 % which is very impressive considering where he has been in his career.  1.8 steals a game, 2.5 blocks a game and 56% from the field on more usage so far this year..

He has been playing out of his mind, statistically.  When Griffin gets back, he, Rose and Griffin are going to make quite a 3 man rotation.

Cool. Who's that? Does he play in an organized college or pro league for a team I might have heard of even if I'm not a fan of that particular team?

Yes he would have. The league has evolved so much where a back to the basket 5 or even a 5 who jut rebounds and plays the pick and roll isn’t valuable anymore. 20 years ago the 5 was mostly that with the 4 being the athletic back to the basket scorer (Duncan, Malone, Webber, young KG). Now the 5 is basically what a stretch 4 was 10-15 years ago and the 4 is what the 3 was. If you can’t stretch the floor at all, or are not a skilled versatile player down low, you really have minimal value in today’s NBA

I hope he keeps it up and some other teams pays him a ton of money in the off-season. Good stats on a bad team. Maybe they can get some value for him around the trade deadline if he's not in their future plans. I personally wouldn't re sign him, the Pistons need a complete rebuild and not being the 7-8 seed every year.

You just know that Tom Gores is gonna screw this up and sign Drummond to a max deal next summer when nobody else will. That will set back the necessary Pistons tank and rebuild another 5-7 years!!

The FT number is far, far more significant than the RB number. Drummond will always be a rebound vacuum, but he is a limited player, and the FT% is a huge component of that.

It's not clear to me that a top-4 seed team can be built with Drummond as a starter. I'd love to be wrong, but we all saw what happened in the playoffs last year. Or rather, most of us didn't see because it was over so quickly. Drummond is simply not a player that frightens top teams.

The Pistons are hopelessly mediocre. Not bad enough to tank, not good enough to ever be good.

In this context the effort Blake has put in to excel when he's on the floor has been admirable; a true professional.

The Pistons are mediocre. M Football is already eliminated from the playoff chase. The Lions are... the Lions, naturally sporting a 3-4-1 record. The Wings totally stink, as discussed below.. People are talking about M basketball being a bubble team. M hockey was picked to finish in the bottom half of the B1G and has played like those predictions are fair. The Tigers just finished last in the league, and M baseball lost most of the key pitching that carried them to the last possible game last year. No Winter Olympics, either, and we're not in a World Cup qualifying cycle.

It's gonna be a long, cold, dark winter.

He is a losing basketball player. Teams that are competing for a championship don't want players like him.  Stats can be misleading.

He’s played very well thus far, but his 4 turnovers a game are an important mention.  He’s made some costly turnovers this year in big moments as has the whole team.  Him and Rose have been catalysts, but also infuriating at times with ball security.  I’m sure a lot of that is a product of being tired from being asked to play nearly 40 min. a game due to injuries and an unfamiliar expanded role, but the Pistons and Dre need to get that squared out.

Trade him now for a bunch of garbage...it’s the Pistons (Detroit really) thing to do. Or, just pick up a bunch of garbage and draft nobody (although I think we’ve been screwed in draft position a number of times over the years).

He is criticized far too much by Pistons fans IMO. He’s an elite rebounder, maybe the best of his generation. He’s limited for sure. He’s a better version of Deandre Jordan. The issue is that Drummond is the second best player on the team when Griffin is healthy. Jordan was the 4th-5th best player on most of his teams, so he’s not nearly criticized as much.

That said, I hope we don’t give him a max contract. It’s time to rebuild as Griffin isn’t going to be healthy long term, so I doubt we’re able to compete for playoff spots after this year. We have some solid building blocks in Kennard and Doumbouya and could pair that with a few top 8 draft picks to see what we’ve got.
