OT: 2020 Corvette is a thing of beauty

Submitted by FabFiver5 on July 19th, 2019 at 9:23 AM

So GM unveiled the 2020 Corvette Stingray late last night, an all-new mid-engine performance machine. Looks aggressive and mean from a profile perspective and tons of customization options. They didn't announce much on pricing, other than it would start at less that $60,000.

If I nitpicked, it would be that the taillights look like they are copied/pasted from the Camaro, and the interior row of climate buttons is a little funky looking.

All in all, should be a great and exciting new flagship for the Chevrolet brand.

I kind of agree, though. The lights are similar to those on the Camaro, and the back end is just a bit busy/overwrought, in general - at least based on that one picture.

I'm sure I'll change my mind when I see it in person. On balance, though, it looks fantastic - like a genuine exotic supercar.

I shake my head at the so-called "purists" who want nothing to do with a mid-engine Vette. They've only been talking about it for decades. And the claims that it's too European-looking? The original Corvette was a direct reaction to the popularity of European sports cars following WWII. Chevy wanted in on the action and developed the Corvette.

And I love driving stick as much as the next guy, but it doesn't sell and the autos are just better in terms of performance (and fuel economy!) these days.

EDIT: One comment about that interior view that is related to the mid-rear engine placement - I love that you can actually see the road in front of you. This is the gripe I have about the Mustang. The hood is just so large, it really does force a longer viewing angle, if you know what I mean (I'm making up words here, but I think you get the picture). I would appreciate being able to see more of the road in front of me.

EDIT2: Apparently, they also revealed the 'Vette 'vert.

I'd wait to see it up close and personal before passing judgement on those tail lights.  Having owned a bunch of vettes, I thought the round lights in their various iterations became boring.

I am also looking forward to testing this car to see how its DCT transmission works.  I've driven a couple of performance cars with paddle shifters and once you get used to them, at least in my case, it was easy to say goodbye to a manual transmission, something I never thought I would do.

This car, from what GM has published, has superb performance in its base model, probably due to the pairing of a pretty cool small block V8 with a modern transmission and very nice balance. A light car, I believe this is something like 3350 pounds, also helps immensely.   I can only imagine what the Z06 or ZR1 or whatever they name the more performance oriented versions that will be coming down the pike will do from a performance perspective.

Seems like a big, big leap. Especially with a starting price under $60K. Now will there be any base base models at $59,999.99 on dealer lots? Maybe. Maybe not. But 0-60 in 3 seconds, 490HP from a naturally aspirated V8, that's no joke. For this price the Toyota Supra looks like a joke, and the Boxster/Cayman are squared up.

My nitpick would be that it's DCT only (#SaveTheManuals) but depending on what the stick shift take rate was on the C7, I could see why they didn't spend the development dollars.

A manual transmission, I'm sorry to say, cannot come close to performing as well as a DCT. DCT's shift lots faster, both up and down, and you never miss a shift.  They also make traffic a joy.  I know of very few people who have driven DCT's that afterwards wanted to go back to a manual transmission.

Modern automatic transmissions have helped change performance metrics due to the number of gears and ways to optimize power and gearing.

Not true:

Honestly, it depends on what it important to you. If you take it to the track and like the styling (I personally think it is awful), they the Civic Type R is for you. If you want a faster 0-60, better gas mileage, all wheel drive, and subtle styling, then the Golf R is your pick. Overall, you can't go wrong with either - they are both great cars for the $.

That's true of most products that have a built-in demand.  When they first come out, there is a frenzy and people will pay over sticker price.  Once that initial demand is satisfied, the price drops to what it was intended to be all along.

what’s with the button ribbon down the left side of the passenger seat? Looks like an ergonomic nightmare for the driver to access.

It looks nice but a Corvette without a manual available is kinda sad.  I believe the previous gen ZR1 was the most powerful car you could buy with a manual transmission.

Every single car I have owned since 1982 has had manual transmission, but I finally had to give it up a couple of years ago because automatics had finally reached the point where they accelerated faster and achieved better gas mileage. Manual transmission on BMW went from rare to almost impossible without special order, and even then limited to certain models.

Automatics nowadays are better in every objective way. But the things I love about a manual transmission are completely subjective.

I will never feel the same "man melds with machine" feeling I get as when I'm putting that clutch pedal down and throwing a shifter knob around as I hunt for the apex on a twisty mountain road.

That being said, I do this maybe 1% of the time I'm driving, so perhaps I shouldn't weight it so heavily when picking a car :D

I hate GM's touch screens. They look really childish/cheap imo. It's not even properly integrated into the interior. It's probably nice that it's angled toward the driver, but it just throws the whole thing off.

I've never been a fan of Corvettes and their body style. I have to admit this one is sharp as hell though.

Glad they finally rolled a mid-engine ‘vette out. They’ve been talking about this for years!

Now let’s see if they can get that bitch around the Nürburgring ring faster than it’s little brother...the Camaro ZL1 1LE.  This would be no small feat as that camaro is as dialed in a track car as GM has ever rolled out.

Im guessing the Corvette guys want their title back!

if you’re into cars there is a YouTube video out about the ZL1 1LE, it’s design, and they show the whole race around Nürburgring from inside the car.....it’s pretty badass.

Great job GM rolling out an American muscle machine that is whoopin’ a lot of the super car asses...all at 1/4 of the price.

i've never been a huge fan of corvettes but I even like the look of this one now.  That being said I would never buy and or drive a sports car like this if it was not a full manual transmission.   I get why they are cutting production on it, but call me nostalgic, stubborn or whatever.

Looks really complicated.

Shiny though.  Curvy too.

Does it come in a gas mileage friendly family mid-size SUV with blind-spot assist and rear camera?

The lost me when they lost the third pedal.

0-60 sub 3 is impressive. No AWD though.

Sub $60k is also impressive.

Would look decidedly better if they shrunk the rear trunk; it's a bit overlarge in the posterior for my eye.
