Open Thread: Michigan State vs. Purdue
Going into the half, an under-manned Purdue team leads Michigan St. 38-35. Purdue has been playing very well and gotten MSU and Green into foul trouble so far. Robbie Hummel has been playing great, with about 18 first half points.
If MSU loses, they drop into a first place tie with Michigan and OSU, so this is a huge game for Michigan.
Game is on CBS.

I've always wondered, how do they determine who gets the ball first in the second half? I've been trying to notice a pattern, but it doesn't seem to have to do with who wins the opening tip, half time score, or home/away, at least from what I've seen. I maybe wrong though.

So the team that doesn't get the tip will get the ball at half unless there was a jump ball at some point

It goes to whoever has the posession arrow... simple as that. They then change the arrow after the inbound.

The same way CCHA officials determine penalties. A dog-riding monkey throwing darts.

Purdue is playing pretty well considering Bird and Barlow are out. Need to keep Hummel going if they want a shot in the 2nd half.

Possesion arrow

That makes sense. Thanks.

Hummel is looking like pre ACL Hummel. He really knows how to play the game in all phases and I love watching him play.

Don't tempt Perry...

I saw at one point the teams were 0-7 in Freethrows combined O.o

wins we hold our own destiny to the big ten title. We have the easiest remaining games left, and Ohio still plays MSU. SO THIS IS HUGE
February 19th, 2012 at 2:08 PM ^
Are there any two team or three team tiebreakers besides H2H?
February 19th, 2012 at 2:18 PM ^
football every team that ends in a tie actually win the big ten, does not matter if you lost both games to one of the teams.
February 19th, 2012 at 2:21 PM ^
They look at record against the next best team and then go down the list until the tie is broken. This benefits MSU because they are 2-0 against Wisconsin which, by rule, beats our 1-0. Sucks that that decides it because I think we would have beaten them twice if we had a chance.
Edit: As mentioned before me, we'd still be co-champs. My post is for tourney seeding.

Not a purdue fan, but go boilers!

Purdue is looking good. Hope they don't look this good when they come to AA. Stay the course and UM could win the BIG title this year.

Home team always looks good in the Big Ten

Did anyone hear what Seth Davis just said? He was asked if someone outside the Top 10 can win title just said, 'I guarantee it will not happen unless it does."
WHAT!

He's from the John Madden school of sports broadcasting.

Shit. coaches jawing at their players like that on national TV just gives me a bad vibe.
I think what I love most about Brayd Hoke and John Beilein are their coaching philosophies. Hoke's handling of the Hagerup fumble will always be my gold standard for coaching young adults, and what I aspire to be as a coach.

on and off the court is whar coaches should be. I'll take minor lapses in judgement but you can't just go Brian Kelly on your players every game.

Purdue just can't shoot in the 2nd half!
February 19th, 2012 at 2:37 PM ^
I hate to say it, but I can't find a loss on State's remaining schedule.
Hope I'm wrong.

No way they win that one

MSU's got to play five games in 13 days. That's going to be tough. Their legs might not be there at the end of the stretch.
February 19th, 2012 at 2:59 PM ^
At Indiana and home vs OSU or both very loseable.
And in the B1G, if you overlook any team, you can lose, especially on the road.

When did it become uncool to shoot layups with your off-hand? Purdue guys need to do the Mikan drill.
February 19th, 2012 at 2:47 PM ^
I still have nightmares about that drill, years after playing high school ball...
February 19th, 2012 at 2:49 PM ^
NOW Purdue decides to score. Man, if they hadn't missed six layups (or whatever) earlier...
February 19th, 2012 at 2:57 PM ^
Several bunnies and numerous very good open looks missed by Purdue, to which Clark Kellog praised the defense.
February 19th, 2012 at 3:05 PM ^
Hurts me to say so, but love that guy as a player

I detest Sparty and their entire culture, but Green is a very good player who would be a good representative for anyone's program. Most of all, he hasn't been arrested in four years at MSU, and hasn't been involved in any Sparty Shenanigans. He has played through injuries this year without complaint, too.
I'll give credit where credit is due; Draymond Green is not only a good player, but a good citizen. I just haven't figured out what he is doing in EL.

Tell ya the truth, I usually do want ohio to beat state in basketball. I can't stand that arrogant piece of shit izzo. If we need ohio to beat state on 3/4, than I will want ohio to beat them.
I'm not like that fool up at state who won't pull for a rival to win even though it benefits his team.
