One departure.......unexpected...

Submitted by umbig11 on
Unfortunately we have one near term departure and maybe a second. As much as I hate the off-season things happen. TE Devin Asiasi has some family issues to attend to. He is currently in California and may not return. Even if he does, there may be eligibility issues due to not attending classes. The second player in doubt along the OL has been extremely quiet. Still waiting to see how it plays out. Perry will likely return. So far so good.

I genuinely do *not* want to start a trend of checking the name for every player on the roster, but - rather than those two - my hunch says Onwenu is our most valuable O lineman. So: Please tell us it's not Onwenu.

He's an in-state lineman and projected starter. Not homesick and not a problem with playing time. The other options would be academic and legal trouble. He was at the Orange Bowl so he is eligible. No legal trouble has been reported anywhere.

The OP made this sound like someone was transferring by choice as well so it would most likely apply to someone that does not want to be at Michigan anymore. And on our list of linemen, Onwenu is among the least likely for this story to apply to.

Clearly the OP does not want to name the OL at this time. You didn't ask a question. You just threw another name out there for him to confirm after he already said no about Cole & Bredeson.

Nothing is confirmed until after the fact. But there are common reasons why players leave programs, and the point I was making is that Onwenu does not fit them at this time. And why is the burden of proof on me? At least, my reasoning makes sense. What possible reason do you even see Onwenu leaving the program? Why is this even a concern for you besides the OP mentioning an OL leaving? Does Onwenu seem more likely compared to the rest of the returning OL?

I don't think we know enough to speak about true probabilities. You are making guesses. And assumptions. Maybe these guesses will prove correct, but, as they include weakly rooted assumptions, you will have guessed correctly for incorrect reasons. You could say the same for my concern that it is Onwenu.

The difference here: I'm acknowledging that and trying to assume nothing.

1. Onwenu is a projected starter; a true freshman OL who got playing time. Playing time is not a reason for a transfer. In fact, playing time is a big reason why it is most likely not him.

2. Onwenu is from Detroit Cass Tech, a hometown kid from a pipeline school. Who is the last Cass Tech kid who left Michigan for any reason? Boubecar Cissoko? And he didn't even leave by his own choice. He got into legal trouble. This also rules out things like homesickness and family emergencies.

3. We have no reason to believe that Onwenu is in academic or legal trouble. Who is the last Cass Tech kid to transfer out of Michigan for academic reasons? Most of the kids from that high school come pretty prepared for college.

This is not just some blind guess or weakly rooted assumptions. It is thinking which you refuse to do. Insiders have to post stuff many times without names because that is how they continue to get information. But it is lazy to just start listing off players' names like you are and trying to get the OP to continue to refute them until you are satisified. There is not one good reason to even think it would be Onwenu. So why even bring it up?

This is the answer I was punching for (it's humble and true).

I agree Onwenu is perceived as less likely to leave than other OL. But perception and reality make a routine of matching imperfectly. And even if Occam is generally correct, it facilitates assumptions. Maybe they are good assumptions. I was just eager to see a person other than myself to recognize -- irrespective of whether he thinks they are good assumptions --that they *are* assumptions.

"Maybe" is a much wiser word than "certainly," etc.

I try to choose to be a wise coward when given the opportunity between than and a brave fool. Of course, brave fools, by actually moving to claim things, have the luxury of being right more often than the wise coward who claims nothing. But as a personal philosophy, the principle here is what matters to me.

Hidden variables are real. For as far as I know, Onwenu had a severe case of disliking Harbaugh which onset the eve before umbig's OP. Or a sudden urge to quit school and football to be a hermit in the wilderness. Or is heartsick from a break-up or recently woke up without friends.

Obviously these are borderline insane examples. Less ridiculous examples are also extant. Those and these add up as unlikely. And that's the point of my original post. I have no absolute certainty that Onwenu would return.

It seems other outsiders, like LaB, likewise have no such certainty.

Bredeson or Cole didn't make sense to begin with seeing Cole could have left for the NFL Draft and Bredeson was interviewed at Signing of the Stars. Runyan Jr seems unlikely given the legacy connection. Doubt it is Onwenu. Probably not Newsome given his current injury situation.

When I saw this, I was thinking Patrick Kugler. If not Kugler, then Spanellis or Ulizio.

FWIW, Mattison was very optimistic about Newsome on Wednesday in his interview with Sam Webb at the Signing Day Extravaganza. Said rehab was going well. How the conversation went, and how Sam followed up I believe yesterday on WTKA, it sounds like things were veering towards best possible outcome. And because of that, I doubt this has to do with Newsome. I must state though that Noone said he would likely be playing this season or that his career wasn't over - that wasn't even brought up. It just sounded like things were looking really good for Newsome.

No one forced you to read anything. Inferences have been made on multiple sites today. His posts are very much appreciated by the overwhelming majority of the board

It has nothing to do with a tweet by a random buckeye fan. He's connected to the team. How you don't know this, and have been here since '08 I don't know.

is relevant to all as to cumulation of points. I have also been a member, technically, since 2008, but it is not unusual for me to stay away from site for over a year. A lot of time spent on site is dependent on what else is going on in one's life. Whereas some might spend every free moment here, others might just take a peek now and then during periods of signiiicant change w/in the program, etc. I do know since JH's hiring I don't think I've been away for a period exceeding 6 months. Hell, it took me a long time just to find the site and realize it was the best site, imo, availabe to UM fans.

i didnt say it was impossible, but so many things are said before any real proof is given. just because some random person says it doesnt mean it is true. i dont know asiasi, and i have not heard anything from anybody close to him, so why guess about it?
