On3 Head Coach Power Rankings by Conference

On3 has been putting out a weekly power ranking of head coaches by conference. So far they’ve done the SEC, B1G, and ACC. Here are the results:

Here's the section on Sherrone:

How do you rank Sherrone Moore? It’s a tricky question, as he hit a home run in his on-the-job interview as Michigan’s interim head coach (3-0 with Top 10 wins over Ohio State and Penn State), yet now he’s dealing with the challenges of following a legend and assembling a staff and roster capable of keeping Michigan on the throne of the Big Ten.

Moore is tasked with taking a title team that lost the majority of its notable contributors (especially on offense) and steering the program into the future. He had some initial difficulties assembling his Year 1 staff, but landed on a good group — notably poaching Ohio State running backs coach Tony Alford.

There aren’t any fancy graphics for the ACC yet, so you’ll just get a list.

ACC

  1. Dabo Swinney, Clemson
  2. Mike Norvell, FSU
  3. Jeff Brohm, Louisville
  4. Dave Doeren, NC State
  5. Dave Clawson, Wake Forest
  6. Mario Cristobal, Miami
  7. Bill O’Brien, Boston College
  8. Rhett Lashlee, SMU
  9. Mack Brown, North Carolina
  10. Pat Narduzzi, Pitt
  11. Brent Key, Georgia Tech
  12. Brent Pry, Virginia Tech
  13. Manny Diaz, Duke
  14. Justin Wilcox, Cal
  15. Troy Taylor, Stanford
  16. Tony Elliott, Virginia
  17. Fran Brown, Syracuse

I’m not upset about Sherrone’s placement. I get that, even with his 1-0 record against OSU, PSU, and Maryland, he still needs to prove himself as a full time head coach in control of weekly game planning, etc. Riley at #2 is a bit too high, IMO.

Thoughts?

Steve 8-5 Sarkisian is #4?  I guess you don't have to prove much to be near the top.  Took the guy 10 years of coaching to get his first 10-win season.  And how could one possibly rank Jonathan Smith above Good Shit Jedd?  So, far, in 2 short careers, their performance has been relatively the same, except Good Shit Jedd hit the high value mark sooner.

Nobody below Sark has won a conference title (Only Lane won even a division title) in a power conference.  Sark has.

As for Fisch and Smith, Smiths coaching career IS literally double the length of Jedd’s.  Staying power appears to matter in these rankings, so I’m fine with Smith being higher ranked.

I probably should avoid the bait, but what's with the fucking snark?  Because I simply provided an empirical data point for Sark being ranked above 12 other SEC coaches?

As for Lanning, yes, I agree - he's ranked well too high on the B1G side.  He hasn't really won big games (yet).

Feels like somebody just pulled these lists out of their ass and didn't account for the fact that it's much tougher to be competitive at certain universities.

Yeah, I don’t know how Ryan Day is considered #1 in the B1G when he has always had the most talent. What Schiano has done with Rutgers is much more impressive than what Day has done with OSU. What David Braun did with Northwestern last year was extremely impressive, yet he’s near the bottom of the list.

Lincoln Riley's tenure as a top two Big Ten coach is going to last right up until we play them, at the longest.

And I get that putting a list together is as difficult as it is pointless, but putting Sherrone behind the guy at MSU just seems dumb.  Michigan is all but certain to beat them and have a better record in 2024, so their stated logic on sherrone will be erased wrt MSU almost immediately.

On behalf of the family of the late Deckland Sullivan Brian Kelly #2 HELL NO!

Purple Face might have him some X's and O's but if being a college coach is in any part character development, ethics, and not changing to a Cajun drawl at the first press conference I put Brian next to Urban Meyer on the podium of disgust.

it remains a bummer that my old school-mate, mike leach, is not with us to be in the B10.   genius.  funny.  give him the tools that he would need and look out.

I get Moore being ranked 9th.  He's brand new with almost no track record but the one that really stood out to me as being just wrong was Shiano at 15 behind a whole host of newbies and guys who've really never done anything.

Like him or hate him he's resurrected the Rutgers program from the absolute dead, TWICE, and that alone earns him much higher marks than most on that list.  Personally I'd slot the guy at either 4 or 5 given what he's been able to do there.

FRAMES JANKLIN #4 B1G...

As bad as he has been in the B1G in clock management lets never forget this man pimping out at Vanderbilt.  No way I have Sherron Moore 5 slots below FRAMES.  I hope PSU signs him to a lifetime deal with all the incentives...to be in 3rd place.

On3 must be really bored right now.  This is perhaps the most useless ranking I have seen in a while - which says a lot given the garbage that is posted out there.

Ryan Day and his staff are coaching for their jobs on November 30th. It doesn't matter how many recruits he signs or what other teams he beats. On November 30th if he loses again then he's out. They're trying so hard to suppress this narrative going into the season, because all it does is empower Michigan. No pressure Ryan. You got this, number one coach in the conference.

If there's a way to calculate WAR for football coaches - and there must be - I'd like to see those ranking.  I have to imagine that Ryan Day wouldn't be in the top quartile, let alone at the top of this list.  He's clearly better than average in some categories (recruiting, offense), but not obviously better than average in others.

I feel like Braun is getting a lack of respect. I would put Braun and Fisch above Moore just because they've been head coaches and done well in bad situations.

Ryan Walters being towards the bottom is great, fuck that guy.

I believe that Moore being ranked in the middle of the pack is appropriate. I also believe that it is very likely that he is well ahead of the curve in several regards and will move up these sort of rankings quite quickly.

OT, sort of: Recently, there have been a number of excellent you tube clips breaking down the (successful) strategies of NFL teams moving toward the "Raven" type defense to combat the high-powered passing offenses. It is my sense that the winning offensive strategies  to attack these complicated amoeba defenses is going to trend back toward more complex rushing attacks.

Now, isn't it interesting to consider how Michigan climbed the ladder of success over the past three years??? Yes, it was employing the Raven's defense but it was also attacking all those defenses that are constructed to attempt to contain the increasingly popular passing attacks with a power rushing attack. Here, moving forward, I view Sherrone's response to the PSU defense as very interesting, good news. The pendulum in these regards has always swung back and there is no reason to believe that it will not, once again, do so. For these reasons, I will be shocked if Orgi is not the starting Michigan QB next year...and I will not be shocked if there is some form of a triple, or even quadruple, option that is an important part of this offense next year.

The point of playing the games remains the winning of them.

OT, but the ACC needs die and give way to something else.  Network revenue system be damned, it was ridiculous to add the CA and TX schools just bc they’re in CA and TX. The travel will almost certainly offset any financial gain. They should’ve just added Cincinnati and WVa years ago and been done with it. At least that would’ve restored some old rivalry matchups that would be worth planning to watch. I have zero interest in watching the new additions vs ACC priors.
