Was going to make a thread for this earlier, but busy at work.

I find it curious that the names on the Chinese team (at least in the NBC broadcast) have been Sinesized such that it is not apparent that a large portion of them are not actually Chinese.  Example: starting goalie us Jeremt Smith, but broadcast shows as Shimisi Jerumei (also former Sparty Jake Chelios, or Kailiaosi Jieke, is playing for the Chinese team).

The Olympic rule is that the athlete has to hold a valid passport from the country they represent.  Hearing stories where this isn't exactly being followed.  For example, Russian and US athletes giving up their citizenship for two weeks to play hockey?  The US skier representing China was asked point blank "did you give up your US passport?"  ...crickets what the response.

Happy that these athletes get to participate, but rules are rules in international competition.

He (and almost all of Team China) play for the only KHL team in that country... so all are on their olympic team even though no one wants to discuss if they are actually Chinese citizens.

For those unaware, it is *not* a problem for people to have dual (or more) citizenship and play in the Olympics.  However they *must* hold citizenship in the country they represent.  The Chinese government does not allow dual citizenship - anyone claiming Chinese citizenship must officially renounce all other claims, yet enforcement during the Olympics is.... lax, to say the least.

I really, really dislike this. It's one thing if you have some connection to the country. Former UM soccer player Justin Meram played for the Iraqi national team because his parents both directly immigrated from there and felt a strong connection to the country. That's totally understandable.

I don't know what you're talking about. All of these guys have strong connections to China. Just look at this quote from Chelios to Reuters:

"Since we've been over here for three years you start to feel a closeness to China. We've been eating Chinese food, living the Chinese culture so there's a certain closeness you feel with China and you start to feel you want to win for them,"

He's been eating Chinese food! If that's not a strong connection, I don't know what is.

I highly doubt a bunch of guys renounced their citizenships to become Chinese citizens just to play in this olympics…so the obvious conclusion was China was basically able to hire a minor league hockey team to play for them instead. If China wasnt the host country, no way that wouldve been allowed

"China's women's hockey team has faced similar criticism, with 12 out of 23 players being born outside of China. Zhou Jiaying, who more often goes by the name Kimberly Newell, is the team's Canadian-born goalie, and she found herself in the middle of an awkward situation recently. Although her Olympic profile lists English as her first language spoken, she was recently told that she was not allowed to speak English to members of the press. Instead, she had to speak Mandarin and allow a translator to convey her words to the media."

let's see.  crazy leader?  check.  incredible authoritarian regime controlling every bit of life?  check.  extreme racism in many respects?  check.  desire to rule the world or at least large parts of it?  check.  concentration camps for religious minority seen as undesirable?  check.  state-controlled business that are somewhat private but not really?  check.

all they're missing is a swastika and some goose-stepping.

Not sure if this is serious question. Who is their leader? Who controls the government and what happens to anyone who opposes their regime? Who owns most of the assets in their country, and how did they acquire and maintain control of them? What are they currently doing on the international stage, maybe with a bordering country that has key strategic assets?

Maybe they are more subtle in the way they run their autocracy, but it's no less abhorrent. And if you didn't notice, the two countries we are discussing here are ALLIES.

(Just to be even more transparent - China and Russia are the two countries I'm referring to here.)

i think i agree with you, but the difference is that russia isn't nearly the threat to literally the rest of the free world that china is and has been under the CCP these last few decades.   china's population which is what, 10X that of russia, has far more economic ability to force compliance with the chinese take over of the world.  i know a number of russians (and some from china, too) and as crooked as it is in russia, there is still a much greater level of individual freedom for the average russian.

Yes, she did an interview where she said it was all a big misunderstanding.  She didn't disappear, she was just very busy and not interested in the outside world's opinion.  And there was a very nice man from the Chinese government sitting in on the interview to make sure everyone was comfortable and that nothing got taken amiss.

Jonathan Allen disagrees.  He doesn't believe that Xi Jinping is anywhere close to Hitler's military genius...

(Allen think Hitler was a military genius and would love to have dinner with him.  Seriously!??!  A military genius???  LMAO!!!  Hitler was the fucking moron that destroyed Germany's chances to actually win that war...)

A few USA/Olympics tidbits for the casual hockey fans (feel free to add more): besides Michigan's Brendan Brisson and Matty Beniers, USA Hockey's roster has other players with local connections, starting with goalie Strauss Mann, who was one of Michigan's team captains in 2020-21 and now plays professionally in Sweden.  Former Wolverine Steven Kampfer (from Jackson MI) is listed on the roster as an alternate.

Long-time Red Wing Justin Abdelkader (now with the GR Griffins) has also seen ice time today, he hails from Muskegon.

Backup goalie Pat Nagle is from Bloomfield Hills and formerly played for Ferris State.

Andy Miele (Gross Pointe Woods) played collegiately for Miami (NTM).
