Would the rule change be for football only?
I played lacrosse in college and we played games in California and Florida over spring break. What would happen to the basketball holiday tournaments?

"We're very adamant that, in your non-championship season, if you have a vacation period, it should really be a vacation period."

Basically saying in your particular sport's off-season, vacations should be vacations.  But if you're in-season playing lacrosse it's ok to travel and play games over spring break and not use that break for studying and rest like they go on to say in the poorly supported and ever contradictive article.

Just to fuck with them, Harbaugh should hold a virtual practice at IMG or whatever school with a huge video screen (like a drive-in) where the Michigan players are still in Michigan along with the other coaches. Their fucking heads would explode. They wouldn't even know which part to criticize first.

Their reasoning is so dumb. So does this mean that bowl games during Christmas break are now forbidden? Basketball games during Thanksgiving, Christmas and spring break are now done. Baseball during summer break? Makes no sense. Especially when this gives kids at strong academic institutions like Michigan less time away from studies. Hypocrites.

That was my thinking too.  They aren't part of the championship season, they are post-season exhibition games.  At the very least I would think this rule would prohibit the traditional 5-7 days teams spend at the bowl location for fun, sun, and practice.  I suppose they are now to arrive at the bowl location the night before the game just as they do for championship season road games.

Whatever. The NCAA is so busy running around with their little first aide kit applying bandages, meanwhile they have major hemorages like recruiting violations, coaches cutting scholarships from kids, coaches forcing players to put in far more time than should be expected, coaches bringing back former players to help college kids practice, academic fraud at UNC, coaches lying to players and then leaving for new jobs, kids going to a school for four years and being no smarter than the day they stepped on campus. This NCAA brings in more money than they know what to do with and this is how they spend it. Whatever.

Somehow, many years down the road, I think that the Harbaugh era at Michigan basically ends with the NCAA having an entire section of the handbook dedicated to the things that it fully believes were discovered and "fixed" during the Harbaugh years, and yet they will have always been a step behind. I am sure we will all chuckle at it in retrospect.

All this arguing about cutting into students time simply ignores the fact that the students get that week away from football when they are on campus and able to go to class and study for exams.  Fuckin' hypocrits...

If we really want to be about the kids, then they should pass a rule that there should be no football practice when the relative heat index is above 85 degrees. Too dangerous. See how the southern schools like that.

and recommendations as to students welfare from a conference that makes academics optional among their primary recruiting tools.

I found it interesting when they were making this argument last year, they failed to address the hypocrisy of the cfb playoffs taking place at a period generally considered to be an unspoken understanding of family togetherness. Realizing their mistake, they have included the words, "not in your championship season,"  interpreted to mean, yes we understand having the playoffs at this time of year is fully opposite of the message we are trying to convey but that horse is already out of the barn.

Further, with an understanding that an SEC school, possibly two in the future, will always be a part of the cfb playoffs, they are basically asking for an understanding of already being obligated to an exception of the asked for restrictions.

Sure SEC, we understand your only concern is the education and welfare of the student, athlete and hoisting that trophy at the end of the season plays absolutely no role in your recruitig practices and organized sport is played solely for the benefits that come from participation alone. If you should win a trophy or two, that's just a bonus and providing a first class education will always be the primary goal of your league. You truly are the epitome of what all conferences should aspire to.

Not one mention of the fact that this replaces spring practice time that overlaps with classes. But of course we get some sanctimony about "not getting too far away from academics" without that explaining that this trip does exactly that.

It must suck to have legislation showing you can't travel outside of Columbus or east lansing, you'd think they'd want to escape... Would also suck being from Mississippi where fun goes to die

Its pretty clear people, giving your athletes a free spring break trip to a warmer climate is damaging to mental health. But if the NCAA thinks there are actual infractions going on in secret, they better come up with something within 6 months or they should be fined.

The team is totally going to practice down in Peru against hardened criminals and poor locals.

Then Jim Harbaugh will fire up a giant grill and feed them all personally after the game.

Harbaugh is going to invite the staff, the players, and all of their families to wherever they plan on going this year. So it isn't about football, it's about family. A family trip, and the players by coincidence happen to be in the same place as the rest of the team and the coaches.
