Ohio State Snowflakes: General Observations

Submitted by LSAClassOf2000 on

This will be the thread for hot takes which defy neat categorization but are still Ohio State related.

In OT the ball is spotted at the 25yd line to start the series. This makes the 15yd line the line to gain. The ball just needs to be touching the 15yd line to for it to be a first down. When the refs spotted the ball touching the 15yd line it made it a first down. This is why no chains were needed in this case since the 15yd line is the line to gain. For a call to be overturned by replay it has to be conclusive. The replay was not conclusive (100% showing video evidence to overturn the call) which is why the refs said the play stands instead of saying the call is confirmed. Had Barrett been called short on the field, that call also would not have been overturned. I know you are disappointed but this was the correct call based on the rules and with replay.

Harbaugh is mentally weak and cost us this game. We will never beat OSU as long as Meyer is there. Gave this game away. Thanks for the tirade Harbaugh. This is on you 100%. No matter how good Michigan is, it will always be X-1. That one loss will be OSU. IT'S MENTAL AT THIS POINT. GAVE THIS FUCKING GAME AWAY. HEAD COACH DOWN JUST LOST COMPOSURE.

Wilton speight lost that game for us. Plain and simple. 2 picks. One for 6. And a godamm fumble at the one. This is All on speight. No one else. We win by 3 plus scores without him straight fucking us.

Michigan doesn't even have a chance to win without him today. He was basically the only reason the offense could move the ball at all. Also that pick 6 was more on the terrible play call and terrible pass protection than on Speight.

I don't agree with this. I do think Michigan will beat OSU with Meyer as coach. I think Harbaugh is an excellent coach. I think he is recruiting at Micihgan well enough that we could possibly beat them as early as next year. I wouldn't bet on it, but I wouldn't be surprised. However, I do think this was the year that Michigan was probably at an advantage talent wise. I'm sad they lost this one.

Obviously, the officiating in this game was terrible.  However, I don't agree with your assessment that it's getting worse, or has declined over time, with one exception - replay.

I believe replay has impacted games in two major ways:

1. Super slo-mo, high-def replay changes the perception of both replay officials and fans. Bang-bang plays are parsed frame-by-frame, and calls are altered because of it.

2. Refs are trained (or self-taught) to call things differently now, knowing that replay will make a final determination. Rather than making a judgment and standing by it, refs will call things in a way that allows for replay to overturn.

IMO, replay just doesn't seem to make watching games more satisfying. It slows things down, and so often doesn't "fix" things. Yesterday's game was a perfect example.

That said - I still have nightmares about Charles White's phantom touchdown...sigh.

Holy shit were the refs living in Urban's back pocket. We didn't help by taking a few correct ones of our own but there were several missed calls, any of which is probably enough to escape in regulations.

But if you would have told me at the beginning of this year that we'd lead most of the game and have a chance to win at Ohio Stadium in 2OTs, I'd have said no way. U-M got nuked in this game at home last year. There's been progress, even if it doesn't feel like it right now.
