Ohio State believes it needs $13 million in NIL money to keep its football roster together

Submitted by umfb19 on June 2nd, 2022 at 2:11 PM

My favorite quote (Cheat... but just cheat a little... not too much to get caught):

“If the speed limit’s 45 miles per hour, and you drive 45 miles per hour, a lot of people are going to pass you by,” Day said. “If you go too fast, you’re going to get pulled over.”

So that’s the middle ground Ohio State said it wants. What is that? Maybe 53 miles per hour? Maybe 57 if the weather is good and the roads are empty?

We don't like him 'round these parts, but he's speaking truth here.  And who cares if he names his salary budget?  It's not like the NCAA will ever do anything about it.  THEY CAN"T!!!!\  All Day is doing here is establishing the market.  If Jimbo claims more or Saban doesn't blink, Day will adjust as necessary.

Meanwhile...  Michigan will continue following rules that don't exist in reality because 'The Michigan Way'.  Pearls will be clutched at the thought of NIL payments towards that sum.  Harrumphs will be harrumphed if a reporter asks if boosters have been approached.

Another good one from AD Gene Smith: "“Unscrupulous characters are good at what they do, and it’s always been that way.”

It's unclear if he was referring to OSU or not, or the presence of irony in his voice. But I'm guessing it's just a complete lack of self-awareness.

I'm not sure how it's unclear if he was referring to OSU or not.  If you expand your copy and paste to before and after the quote it's pretty clear:

Smith referenced schools that are basically directly paying recruits through NIL right now, which isn’t technically allowed by NCAA rules but isn’t currently being enforced at all.

“Unscrupulous characters are good at what they do, and it’s always been that way,” Smith said.

So Smith said the Buckeyes won’t get into the world of encouraging straight payments for recruits.

This is excellent.  Michigan has a goal, and tbh, $13 million in the short term is peanuts until this whole NIL business gets regulated.

I mean, the quote is not wrong. If the NCAA made it clear they were going to enforce rules and strictly and fairly, they might reconsider, but I don’t even know the rules with the NIL stuff at this point. Chances are they can blatantly break them and get a slap on the wrist, if anything, and they will be better for it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

There are no rules.  There is a psuedo-rule: you cannot pay for play.

Define 'pay for play', please...  Oh, wait!  The NCAA never defined it!

They (the NCAA) allowed the 'wild west' to begin, and so now any effort to reign it in will be dealt with in court.  The players will argue that their right to NIL payments are being impinged.  There is no defense that the NCAA can offer a court of law that won't end in defeat because it's already begun.

I’m still under the belief that the only way things get reigned in is with contracts, and the biggest villain in my eyes in that pursuit is the schools, who refuse to accept reality. As much as I dislike the NCAA for its past, I’d bet any rule they set down that would prevent a player in some way from raking in NIL money would be struck down. The NCAA represents the schools after all. The players should get whatever someone is willing to pay them. The schools are in the professional sports business, and I don’t think it changes until they accept that and are willing to pony up. Until then, wealthy boosters are going to have their way.

OTOH, if the speed limit is 45 and you are driving with Michigan license plates in Ohio, you better drive 45, or you are going to get pulled over.

What if the limit is 45, but it's snowing a little? Would you slow it down to 42, maybe? Or maybe if you also had the flu, all the way down to 27?

Problem with all of this isn't the players getting paid whatever they get paid its the continuing bs about 'not pay for play' when it's obviously pay for play. It's also ridiculous to not have contracts and limitations like every other sports league...the whole Quinn Ewers type mess should never be allowed. You can't mix NIL w the transfer portal and have this make any sense.

A back up on your roster pulling in 6 figures who is pissed because he's not starting will spend a lot of time on the phone with other potential suitors instead of busting his ass trying to pass the guys ahead of him and in the classroom trying to stay eligible.

Insane mess..

This is mostly a nothing article because of course Day is going to say this to a bunch of current/future boosters when he's trying to get money - they've been saying this is so many words for years now about facilities upgrades, better equipment, outreach to players, etc.

What did catch my eye was just how much this reads like a press release from OSU filtered through a "journalist".  I don't read a ton of local news anymore so this is probably more my ignorance but that entire article's editorial process must have been someone running spell check because it's full of personal opinions and reframings of situations that are clearly subjective.

Doug Lesmerises has been a bit of a mouthpiece for OSU athletics for 15+ years running now.  He's not a particularly hard-hitting journalist.

There's a reason, despite the fact that he lives in Cleveland and works for a Cleveland organization, that he "just happened" to be down in Columbus this morning to publish this article.

What is Michigan's NIL plan?  Shouldn't we have a whole department dedicated to getting NIL deals for players. If we are paying up to a million bucks for a coordinator it seems like we should be spending at least that much on an NIL department.

The compensation plan for how ever leads it should be: 1st in BIG NIL - $1 million bucks, 2nd, set of steak knives, 3rd, your fired.

Day should ask for more to cover the medical expenses relating to the flu like symptoms coming up in fourth week of November.

Seriously, NCAA have no teeth in this matter. Hope we beat their over priced players again.

What he said is pretty much the same for any big time program. Let’s just say you guys get all of these deals for Blake Corum, but Edwards wants his bag and your boosters have already paid as much as they can to him and McCarthy. Edwards may want to go to the highest bidder. That’s just my hypothetical example for you guys. Guys are already getting offered money by different schools’ boosters so this is just going to get worse from year to year until someone regulates it.

Definitely feels like the Wild West.  Can’t blame the players or recruits. I sure hope the Power 5 conferences agree upon some NIL rules and actually enforce them.  Paying a recruit $2M before he’s stepped foot on campus sets a terrible precedent and is downright ridiculous. This really feels like programs and/or their boosters are stooping to prostitution.  I sure hope the big conferences take some action very soon, otherwise college football will be changed forever, and not in a good way.

Paying the players to sign is what little nicky was upset about.  Day mentioned that the money wouldn't kick in until they were actually on campus....might be a way to get them in early for their first strength training as well.

While I don't like the direction sports has gone, you have to adapt to change or get left behind.

I had Whataburger when I was in Galveston and it was the most trash fast food burger and fries I've ever had. Total waste of hype and novelty. I've had Raising Cane's in a suburb of Des Moines and it deserves the hype of being really good chicken. Need it in your life? That's an overstatement. But go frequently if it's within reasonable distance? For sure.

Now that college football has gone full-on pro, we're ten years max from the big-time schools dispensing altogether with the idea of having to play with only students on their team.  There won't be scholarships or the cost of scholarships once that happens.

Still an open question whether U-M goes along with that.  (*) Speaking only for myself, I have no interest in watching non-students play for a merely-licensed "Michigan" team.

(*) There's probably still an open question whether U-M even goes along with full-blown, open, Ohio-style NIL fundraising/shakedowns, in lieu of bailing to something else.

It seems like this is where Michigan could eventually move to overtake them.  Remember they've been doing a lot of this with tattoos and cars etc.  Michigan can easily do $13mil+

if you have an Ohio plate with the right stickers, up to 15 over seems to be just fine.

If, however, you have a Michigan plate, go 2 over and expect to get pulled over.

What, like we didn’t know this was going to happen?  We knew the stories coming out at the creation of the transfer portal that teams were going to poach players from other teams.  Osu poached Fields from Georgia but got upset when Bama poached a WR from Osu.

You know teams are trying to interfere and in times outright poach players from rosters of other teams.  This is why you have rules in place before you open Pandora’s box.  Cat out of the back so to speak now.  But it’s quite clear what is happening.  Now they are just using the NIL companies to get players they want.

Trying to be above it is going to get your roster robbed and no back up plans.  13 Million to keep osu’s roster in tact?  So what happens when Bama needs another Oline, DE, QB or Rec, they’ll just over bid what osu is already paying.  So that bid becomes 16 million and on it goes.  ATM or Texas needs to beat Bama, well, better hope they don’t start raiding Georgia, Florida, Osu, Clemson or other teams best players to get that roster..

Cost to win CFP is going up!  Of course, this money pales in comparison to when Texas really gets involved.  Or say Stanford wants a Natty!  No one in D1 CF can really spend the money Stanford can if they decide football is important!  USC and UCLA could become players again and Michigan could really vault itself so lets see where the money takes it.  IMO the SEC needs TEXAS money, Texas does not need the SEC…  neither aTm or the Lhorns.

No one was upset that Williams transferred to Bama, they still had one of the better receiving corps in the country. He transferred because of Olave, Smith-Njigba and Garret Wilson would get most of the targets. I don’t remember anyone being upset. It was actually a compliment to OSU’s recruiting and development.

Day is douche bag, but he is dead on with this.  Michigan is choosing to limit itself by following a speed limit that no one else follows and is not strictly enforced
