Ohio St plays Purdue next week. Any early thoughts?

--The game is at Ohio St.

--This will be the third top 5 team Purdue will play this season

--As you know, Purdue upset the first two top 5 teams they played

--Ohio St has had two close wins in a row, Penn St and Nebraska, not blow outs, but closer than they were expected to be. So they aren't world beaters

--CJ Stroud looked uneasy the last two weeks, like against Oregon

--Ohio St has already lost at home this season

Can Purdue pull off a third huge upset?  It certainly would be fun. ?

Oh, are you going to watch? ?

As much as I'd like to see Bell light up OSU like a pinball machine, and Karlaftis level Stroud a few times, I think this is going to be one of those games where OSU stays at arm's length.  They'll get favorable calls especially at home and win their 3rd straight game by 9, 37-28.

Yep, and a perfect example is Alabama's team this year.  They had another close one yesterday (20-14) and could very easily have 3 losses right now.  But no one better believe they don't have the team to win it all. Holds true for every top team - including OSU - no one is going to blow out every team all the time - especially on the road. I consider UM to be a top team and we were fortunate to get by Nebraska but the key.....we won the damn game and moved on.

Michigan plays Penn State next week, not OSU or Purdue. If I have thoughts about the OSU-Purdue game, I’ll put them in a blog about OSU or Purdue where those thoughts belong.

This coming from a guy that has defended a lot of other such posts...  WTH, man?  This isn't like you - someone pee in your Wheaties last night?

I expect dismissive, arrogant, and condescending posts from several people on this blog, but you are not one of them.  I guess you are now though...

You've been here long enough—and have accumulated enough points—to know that discussing what our rivals have been or will be doing has been a staple of board content for as long as MGoBlog has been around.

Such discussions are every bit as relevant as the weekly discussions of what alcoholic beverages people are drinking. Have you complained about those?

In a similar thread early last week I said that Purdue could absolutely beat State and that I saw that game as a toss up due to the matchups. This one I don’t see as a toss up. Ohio State is a more talented, better version of State.

I honestly do not know enough about MSU coaches (though i did learn that Jay-Z and ZZ Top work well together), but the way they used the transfer portal to piece together this band of misfits, motivate them to get just enough to win is impressive. Last week against us he was lucky. Against Nebraska he got even luckier.  Brohm had his number.  But MSU still coached to put them in a position to win most of their games and their players played clean enough to give them a chance.  Maybe MSU brought the fight out in him? Maybe the chatter about LSU has got him in a contract year. Probably the current state of college football is perfect for them (free agency v. recruiting, player payouts, and probably no one is watching their steroid addictions too closely).

Day has inherited the best situation anyone could ever imagine, and he has won as many games as expected. But it feels like he is missing something that Meyer had, and is actually mortal. I don't recall an Urban Meyer coached team being in this many close contests late in the game.  Nebraska and Minnesota are not special teams. The Pac 12 is weak and Oregon played OSU without their best player, in Columbus and won. Maybe wile coyote is real.

MSU doesn't have better actual coaches than OSU, but then again, 2021 is a weird and wild year and they have coached this team up to the teams they have played so far. They have exceeded expectations. Now may they lose out and return to the 'MSU mean', and may ZZ Top end up in the bayou where he belongs.

My thought is that Purdue's offense is good enough to put up 30 points on Ohio State, but they'll very likely lose because of Ohio State's wide receivers.

Sharty and Iowa were frauds and not epic upsets when assessing the talent on the field.

Sharty had been playing high variance football all year to cover up their weaknesses and this was the 4th game where they were significantly outgained in yardage...it finally caught up to them and they got beat.  After "beating" UM in what is their Super Bowl, with the usual MSU voodoo/low probability events, they were destined to blow it the following week.

Iowa was playing 1970's football (and has been for decades under Ferentz) and every 5 or 6 years they start a season that looks promising because they are +3 per game in turnover margin in their first 6 games.  Eventually, banking on average starting field position at the opponent's 30 is not sound strategy.

It's feasible that Purdue can beat OSU, but it is a huge step up from Iowa and Sharty in talent.

That said, I'd want no part of Purdue right now given how creative their play calling is and how dynamic their passing game can be.  UM could be had by Purdue, I don't think OSU will.

My prediction, Ohio State loses out

The shit show that would produce in Columbus would be worth letting Sparty have the East. If Wisconsin beats them, and they would, we may sneak in CFP anyway. Just glad I don’t have to cheer for OSU against Sparty now.
