Official Nebraska Big Ten Membership Date & Conf Membership Voting Numbers

Submitted by MGoShoe on

In response to a reader question, Rittenberg inquired with the Big Ten office and came away with some information regarding Nebraska's conference membership.  Specifically he addresses:

  • When Nebraska becomes a full voting member of the Big Ten and gain a seat on the Big Ten's Council of Presidents/Chancellors. (July 1, 2011)
  • The number of votes that will be required to add members to the conference after Nebraska's admittance. (9/12 members required)
  • The procedure for voting on applicants before Nebraska's admittance. (Current process, 8/11 members required)

Look, the Big 12 North has been complete crap the last few years.  And outside of the odd game against Va Tech & Penn State, the out of conference schedule was Wisconsin-esque.  Wonder how good of coach Bo Pelini will be considered after a few seasons in the Big Ten.

Considering how much they locked down UT last year in the B12 championship game, their defense, at the least, was top-notch.  And they have a tradition of having strong Ds.  I don't imagine that'll suddenly go away.

But their O will only improve if they bring back the triple option :)

It will be interesting, remember Penn St thought they would run the table in the B10, and they have not done too well. I believe Northwestern has gone to as many Rose Bowls as Penn State has since they joined the conference. I do wonder if Nebraska will try to keep a Non-conference game vs. Colorado or Oklahoma.... I remember 1993, I made the trip to Happy Valley for the first game between Michigan and PSU, I'll be in Lincoln at the first meeting (as conference foes) between these two teams. I hope the outcome is like the last Michigan / Nebraska game I was at - the Fiest Bowl where UM came from a 14-3 halftime deficit to beat the Cornhuskers!

But this was the work of the same ex AD (he who shall not be named) that fired our 9-3 coach, hired Bill Callahan, and sent the UNL program to its worst results in 50 years.

Its gets better as you say starting in 2013, even Tom Osborne (our current AD) has mentioned publically he'd like to upgrade the schedule, but its hard to do once set.
