Offense Needs 2yrs to Marinate - Interesting Article

Submitted by lostwages on June 21st, 2019 at 3:16 PM

Interesting article, and one of the fears that I have...M football has been in transition for over a decade now; coaches, schemes, recruits etc.

My concern is that it seems like nobody on the staff has the answers, therefore they're grasping at schemes, or switching coaches to find it. Furthermore (not that I entirely believe it), we may not have the players immediately to run the system.

So we kick the can down the proverbial road another yr.; this year's excuse will be "It's a new system", next years excuse will be "We don't have the recruits just yet", 2yrs down the road the excuse will be "Those new recruits need to get experience in the new system", then 3yrs in "the system didn't work the way we'd planned", 4yrs down the road I wouldn't be surprised to see a new coach or new scheme again.

There comes a time when you just need to stop looking around for a better way to wipe your own ass, and you just have to WIPE IT! WIPE REAL GOOD! (insert 80's song now)

P.S. Looking forward to the season but after I read an article the other day about some of the NFL draftees having a lot of untapped talent, and lacking in education. I'm left wondering if the Michigan mantra of "Leaders and Best" is one without merit.

Shut the fuck up, there is a baseball game on now.

Edit:  I am in the top of the first watching delayed on DVR, so if it is not going well....I still stand by the above comment.

Edit 2:  Wicked!!!!!!!

I suggest you look up the meaning of "kicking the can down the road".

Also, read what you are about to post several times for multiple contradictions.  It helps.

So, is Jim kicking the can or is he making too many changes? Please make up your mind.

I'm not concerned in the least.  The concept will work.  spreading the D out is so logical that it's embarrassing that wasn't implemented sooner by others.

Want to make an offense work and need the recipe?

Here you go.

1. If passing offense, you need a very good passing qb with adequate offensive line protection. Decent talent at the rb and wr/te positions.

2. If run offense, great run blockers and a game manager qb who can convert on 3rd and short and complete screen passes. Need a couple of running backs, one who can grind out yards and the other who can hit the big play.

3. If spread system, a qb who can both run and throw. Some quality skill players and a solid OL.

All have things in common which usually starts with the qb. When is the last time UM had a very good qb? Senior Rudock. DRob was a good qb and UM would have won really big if he had been a better passer.

It's not that hard to figure out. How did Belichick do before the Brady/Belichick era began? No qb then your system is probably going to struggle which is why the NFL backs up the brink truck for them.

It seems to me, when you are not accomplishing your goals making changes is a good idea. Most of our recruits are excellent athletes. They were recruited by a variety of schools running a variety of offenses and defenses. They were/are likely to thrive in many of them. The notion that they are only capable of prospering in the system operational at the time they were recruited is a little silly.

for those who either didn't or can't read (op included): the 2 year thing is from barton simmons, who authoritatively concludes: "maybe it’s a two-year deal.”

the article also features simmons admitting being wrong about the rise of both USC and M several times over the past few years. he's a good high school scout.

Th offense will be very good this year. It will put up some big numbers. But as usual, the team will be judged in the Ohio state game. The offense could be top 5, if they score 17 against OSU people will freak out.

There is no excuse this year other than injuries. We have all three rivals at home. This is year 5. If we don’t beat OSU this year, I have a feeling Harbaugh will never get it done. I don’t give a shit if there is a new offense. Other teams have shown they can learn new offenses and be successful in the same year with it.

Stop being so absolute. Harbaugh is a great coach and he is making an effort to hire great assistants. If they go 10-2 its not the end of the world. I wouldn't be happy or satisfied with it, but it wouldn't derail the program.

" I'm left wondering if the Michigan mantra of "Leaders and Best" is one without merit."  Because of a transition from one scheme to another?  You're a douche bag for wasting your time on a rivals fan site.

This happens every year. Someone always can find an excuse for something, especially in the football program. New OC, lost too many players, new QB, too many injuries. Guess what? Our young ass baseball team that barely made it into the tournament is now playing in the championship game. 3 of the 4 major sports teams at Michigan have made the final four in the last two years. Get it done.

To say they don’t have the right talent at receiver and running back is ludicrous.  I am not an over the top optimistic blind fan.  The offense is stacked at wide receiver.  All of them athletes and good ones that probably played in this type of system prior to coming to Michigan as well with our QB who in my opinion is going to thrive.  Running backs are very easily replaceable now a days.  My biggest concern is just experience at that position and protecting Shea knowing where you are supposed to be which higdon did well, but he sure as hell was not a game breaker or a huge threat to catch the ball out of our backfield.  The least of my concern is the oline right now as long as they are healthy again most coming from this type of system and they have a damn good teacher.  Let’s get something straight too, the offense was not bad last year and they did not lose to Ohio because of there offense.  As with all scheme changes there will be some growing pains but when you have more talent on the field then the other team you will typically win.  It really is that damn simple.

"Stacked" is very much overstating things about our WRs at this point, and is based largely on hype and wishful thinking.  What do we really have, in terms of PROVEN production?  Two guys (Collins and Peoples-Jones) who were good, but not great last year, one of whom is still of questionable injury status.  After that, Black, who is fragile and has never done much, Bell, who has yet to prove he is more than an occasional target, and a hyped-up freshman who has never played a down.

An elite offense doesn't have "growing pains" and they don't spend two years rebuilding.  See OSU last year for how it's done.  You switch QBs, you switch systems, and you get even better.  Sooner or later (and it's later now, being Harbaugh's 5th year) the "These things take time" excuses start to ring hollow.

Sorry, but they did lose to OSU because of the offense. The pace they were playing and plays they were running were never enough to keep up with OSU even if the defense didn't gag. We couldn't even run a hurry up in the 4th while we attempted to make a comeback. How does a major college program not have a hurry up offense?

Exactly right.  Too many people here are still living in 1997, and think you can win championships with a sturdy defense and a steady "game manager" QB.  You can't any more.  There are too many good offenses out there that you're just not going to hold to 14-21 points.  To win championships, you're going to have a win a few games by outscoring people, no matter how good your defense is.  Just ask Alabama.

I’m not saying they need to keep the same offense I agree with what they are doing I just believe this fan base and media are blinded by how well this defense does against inferior talent.  The stats are so overwhelming that they make up for the beatings this d has taken against teams with equal level talent.  They lost last year because they were out coached from the get-out .  We had a guy who runs a 4.6 to 4.7 covering a slot that runs a 4.3 to 4.4 and could not get to the QB and got hosed.

I’m not sure what game you were watching but there offense was scoring at will.  It was a complete joke.  It’s the same issue this defense has had since brown came here whenever we play an opponent that is not inferior in talent and has elite speed at wide receiver.  Maybe if we had a no huddle offense that worked we could have hung in longer or maybe they would have given them the ball back at a faster pace which would have = more scoring from Ohio.
