The going after every single five-star is going to start biting them in the ass as we’ve already seen it do a couple of times now. These kids are looking for bags - not all of them but a lot.

You need a few JJs but Harbaugh and staff are finding guys that are better than their ranking and they have shown an ability to develop guys and get them to the league.

Winning and culture in football is something kids want to be around.

Its similar to how Dantonio built his good years yet Harbaugh and Michigan have a next level advantage in the approach.

Remember Dantonio’s highest ranking star 2016 class?  Success got to him somewhat and he was in on kids he hadn’t been in on before. It was a disaster and they mostly all washed out. It was the beginning to his end.

If our coaches are pulling in their first choices more often than not Im fine with that. If every kid they want 1st continues to go to Bama, Georgia, or OSU that will eventually prove to be an issue. Its not stars its coaches getting their top choices. If that is the 115th ranked corner back than so be it.

Isn't this what happened to the SEC? A&M "stole" about 25 players who would have gone to the Georgias and Alabamas and this season was the season most of those would have had an impact. While Georgia and Alabama are still strong, objectively too tier teams, they lost a bit of their 5 star after 5 star depth.

So in comes Miami to weaken the top pay for play teams even further and within a 2 or 3 year period those teams will weaken.

We need more tiny market teams with a new billionaire alumni willing to front $50m to bleed away some of the top talent. Dilute it all down.

What Michigan football seems to do surprisingly well is get niche transfers in. I would have guessed our NIL strength would have been recruitment and LSA would have been our weakness. Let's hope this run continues as it has masked our relative lack of 5 star talent quite nicely. That and, of course, we must keep our coaches.

In the age of the portal team recruiting rankings matter less than they did before because good chance that several of these guys will be gone after one season.

Culture is so critical to long term success in football. Michigan’s lack of five star talent is understandably disappointing but its culture is what has created the level of success we have seen over the past three years. Consistent high level of success we have not see since Yost.

Miami is a mediocre program with paltry support in state. They have to resort to buying players because they don’t have on field success or facilities to sell players. But when you buy players you are buying mercenaries who can change their mind on a whim and who play mainly for themselves and not for the team.

I don’t fault any kid for taking the money, but if I’m a parent of a big time recruit, I’d be scared to death to send a kid to Miami. Being in that city with piles of cash at that age …. yikes. I know how I was at that age and it would not have ended well.

We’ve seen a lot of cases of kids chasing bags. We saw what happened at TAM and we’ll see what happens at the U, but I feel like recruiting players who want to play hard, train hard, and love football is the better model.

This makes me wonder how the NIL system actually works ...

  • Is there a written contract involved?
  • When is money actually paid? Does any flow prior to enrollment?
  • What percent of total money flowing today is structured NIL vs. under-the-table cash?
  • Will we ever see 'breach of contract' suits brought, by either player or NIL group?

It's a "wild west" scenario, but I wonder how truly wild it is?

And then to that point, it raises the question how much of this NIL (and related) money is visible, and how much is hidden?  For example, a 5-star might be said to have a $1M NIL deal, but that's only what's made public; there's another $2M in other flows in various forms that are carefully kept from view.

Related: I have to believe the IRS is looking at this space with some interest.  I don't think a scholarship is "taxable income," but I'm willing to bet NIL money is.  From that flows two questions:

  1. Do the recipients of NIL money understand this, and are they setting aside money to pay the eventual tax liability? And,
  2. If $1M nominal NIL is really only worth $600K due to taxes, how much pressure will there be to flow hidden money through channels hidden from the IRS?

So when I hear of some calling for "paying players but eliminating NIL," I have to believe they know full well that won't stop the money flowing to attract the top talent.  It'll just go underground, as it was before.

Well the SEC was/is handing out casino chips so that is one way to hide it.

NIL has to be taxable..was'nt there something recently about how all these kids don't realize they are making a taxable income and are going to get burned?  Or am I just having another conversation in my head

I'm not sure this decommit tells us anything about anything.

OSU still has a top-five recruiting class.  They will continue to get more than enough talent to make the playoff and compete for Big Ten titles.

Yes but every time an OSU recruit decommits an Angel gets their wings!

Seriously, Michigan beat OSU this year by a lot of small cuts-   if the same thing happens with their recruiting class it will be glorious!

OSU had the #2 recruiting class in when Ewers committed-  I would think that OSU's ranking would have been lower that year without Ewers since he was the #1 overall recruit O

OSU won't have much left from their 2021 class after this year-
