I don't give a fuck if it's already been posted or not, stop putting SIAP and all it's dumb variants on message board posts because it's dumb.

Disagree on the importance of SIAP or any variations of it.  From a reader's perspective, if you're annoyed that something has already been posted, that seems like a you problem. Skip redundant information and move on.

Why not start each thread with SIAP?  Why not also pre-emptively apologize for other things?  Like what If I'm not interested in a specific post? Maybe people should start things with SIYNI.  That way I can be less annoyed when I open a post and it's not interesting.

Because some stuff circulates and gets noticed on other sites first and/or is borderline ot that stuff and makes someone think that it may or may not have made its way on the board earlier. Combine that with a desire to share info with the board along with limited time to do more than a cursory search and you get SIAP.

I just don't see any issue with it so long as the title is clear.

I mean sure, I just don't get why posting four letters should change anyone's reaction to said post one way or the other.  It's just unnecessary, as would pre-emptively apologizing for just about any other thing every time you post.

Shouldn't we all just operate under the very reasonable assumption that anyone posting a message board topic is not intending to post something that's already been posted? If it has been already posted, it's not a big deal. You can skip and mods can delete. If it hasn't been posted, no apology necessary.  Either way, no apology necessary.

There have been several tributes but this podcast is quality, in general, and a best in class example of what we are missing in sports.

I tolerate Klatt, appreciate Al Michaels, and respect Howard Cosell.

Sportswriters >> Broadcasters. And it will always be that way for me. I mute the cast or listen to a radio stream when possible.

I don't venerate or amplify Klatt's shortform intentionally. I see what he is doing. I don't like it. Michaels was never above the game. Cosell was when he had an ethical bone. Klatt can stay in his Lyriq until Saturday. Football is about the game.

why would anyone compare Joel Klatt to Al Michaels?  Michaels is a play-by-play announcer, essentially a radio announcer who's job it is to tell you what's happening.  Klatt is a color analyst.  It's his job to dissect the game and explain what's happening, and he's pretty good at his job.  He's also a former D1 player, whereas Al Michaels never played to my knowledge.

Michaels doesn't do big time ads during his broadcast, doesn't speculate, and doesn't insert his takes like Joel does on his podcast. Michaels, Cosell, and Wahl stick to the sport wherever the story goes, not their beliefs about it. Klatt is about his hot takes. Fine. I like that some. But I can only take so much secondary sourcing before I'd rather rewatch a game.

Sportscasting forms opinion, whether it comes from one side of the booth or the other. Klatt drove the OSU train until he didn't. At least Urban is overt. Joel is not talking about the game between the Saturdays.

Bottom line I don't like short form ideas thrown out like Klatt does on his podcast or in this podcast. Announcers need to speak to the action. Joel speaks to his ideas of the action. I get enough of that on this board.

I will relisten here. I admit I didn't listen too hard when this first came out, and need to before casting shade.

Cosell was when he had an ethical bone

Ummm, this isn't a lightswitch one flips on and off.

I imagine if Cosell had to operate in today's day and age of scrutiny and the internets, he wouldn't fare well (to be propping him up as a hallmark of broadcasting).

If you want to romanticize the guy for fond memories of days gone by for your personal nostalgia, cool.  The purpose of my reply isn't trying to correct anyone.

Rather, just saying this is an interesting take of "when" he was ethical.

For example, take the ethics of Cosell referring to a Black person on the air as a "little monkey" and then saying he never used that phrase (it's on tape).  That's who the guy was.

I think studies have showed one fundamentally at the core either is or isn't ethical.

Have you read The Color Purple? People change. Ethics can grow on you. I know I see privilege in ways I didn't used to post George Floyd. I would be interested in this study saying people don't change.

Cosell used the term "little monkey" inappropriately causing enough cognitive dissonance that he denied saying it. That happens often for many people.

When Cosell turned his back on boxing that was his ethical moment. He was egotistical and arrogant which makes the Klatt comparison strong (if unpopular.) Klatt still has a life to live so I should be more tolerant. Broadcasting is telling people what to think. Klatt rubs me the wrong way. I need to think about why exactly before going full firehose, but I don't see him giving up CFB like Cosell did boxing. No nostalgia Cosell was the best boxing sportscaster of his day.

He's pretty spot on and Russillo as well -= very fair and its so fun to hear - his take on Saban is awesome and he owned it!   Their beef with Kanell is also fun and no mention on Pete Finebaum is appreciated

Great segment. I celebrate Rusillo's entire catalogue (esp "Life Advice"), but he unabashedly thinks the SEC should get the benefit of the doubt and all season he tried to put everyone above Michigan (eg, Clemson, USC and LSU). It has to cause him moderate pain to hear someone give Michigan due credit.

To be fair to Rusillo, he was early to defend Harbaugh when many fans (including our board) were ready to shitcan him ("It's not like he's going 3-9...who are you going to get, etc").
