Not SIAP: Mitch McGary's suspension increased by 10 games

Submitted by Joseph_P_Freshwater on

According to Yahoo Sports, it doesn't appear to be a second violation, but rather failure to comply with procedural guidlines set forth in the progam.

Doesn't look good for Mitch.  It's the last year of his contract and his minutes/stats are decreasing

EDIT: Mlive is garbage and doesn't want to link properly for me.  Take my word.

would be a pretty big waste of talent.  Mitch had incredible soft hands, nice touch from mid-range and an incredible motor.  At the time of his suspension in college, I thought it was BS, but it looks like he really does have a problem.  He was one hell of a player and had the potential to be an NBA starter.  Very unfortunate.

In his rookie year he actually did pretty well. If he could've just laid off the pot for a bit longer I have no doubt he would've found a good suitor as a backup 5. It's too bad, I hope he gets a chance and doesn't strike out after 2 swings as he was one of my favorite players of the Beilein era.

He and Ricky Williams should open a smoke shop. They'd probably call it "Mitch and Ricky's". They wouldn't be able to come up with a better named because they'd be high.

http://www.medicaldaily.com/smoking-marijuana-does-not-improve-creative…- On another note, Mitch diving all out for the loose ball against Northwestern in a game we were up by like 30 was still one of my favorite moments of the 2013 season. Kid played his heart out, that's for sure. Hopefully crap like this will eventually lead to the NBA letting the players do what they want with their personal lives, especially when it's something that's mostly harmless.

There's "so many" ways you can elaborate on how terrible it is and yet you chose to do so on zero of them. Seems legit. I'm not arguing against weed, I'm not saying it hurts anyone, in fact I even argued for it in my comment. I'm just saying the evidence that says it does help with creativity is by no means more definitive or legit than the ones that say it doesn't.

  • Ingesting THC is not the same as smoking marijuana
  • What the study considers "creative thinking" is infantile
  • A placebo group was used, but not a true control group

The second one in particular is what gets me. Apparently the link is now broken, but the study doesn't seem to understand what it purports to be studying.

1. You're right, it's not the same as smoking. However it has the same effect on the brain in small doses, which the study said they used.

2. So what study do you have with better standards of creativity to compare to? Anything?

3. The placebo effectively functions as the control group. In fact, in medical therapy studies the two are functionally synonomous. Not only does a placebo-controlled group not invalidate the study, it's the standard in the field.

The NBA pretty much does let the players do whatever they want.

Do you understand how hard it is to get suspended in the NBA for smoking weed? Barely anyone ever gets suspended because their testing policy is a joke and you have to fail 3 tests before they suspend you.

It's not out of the question to think that McGary has failed every test they've given him.

As a reminder, the NBA doesn't suspend for pot until 3 failed tests. They give you time to practice not getting caught, and practice going through the treatment program, before it counts. He has a $2.4 million option for next season that the Thunder would need to act on by the end of October. There's no way that's happening now.

I did find that large amounts of herbal medicine was the only thing that helped with my bruised/dislocated ribs.

The codeine didn't seem to do much as it's more of a dull constant poking vs sharp pain.  Didn't even remember the pain and was able to pass right out versus the week of inability to sleep prior.

100% agree. I found that large amounts of weed was the only thing that helped me deal with the crushing boredom of studying and that its medicinal effects were the only thing that made that pain manageable.

That and Taco Bell.

He will get paid by someone next year. He probably doesn't want the Thunder to pick up his option. He has serious skills and I'm sure he wants to go somewhere that he can play consistently.

Your theroy is Mitch is purposively getting himself suspended multiple times for weed so that next year, when he's a free agent and can sign anywhere he wants, he wont get a contract offer from the Thunder?  Because he couldnt possibly just turn it down and take sombody elses offer.

And that this mystery new team who like players suspended twice for pot will give Mitch more playing time.

Not sure I'm going with this one.

The serious issue is the stupidity of prohibition. Didn't work for alcohol, has not worked for MJ either.

Labeling it a Schedule I tells us all how stupid the federal government is. Some of biggest $$ opponents are big ETOH as studies show we will substitute MJ over ETOH.

The MJ experiments in play in Oregon, Washington and Colorado will be, eventually, expanded state-by-state, as has gambling before it.

MJ addiction's downside, except for the rare person at risk for schizophrenia and for the youth who's judgment and maturity are as yet unformed, thus causing developmental delays in maturation, pales in comparison w/addiction to ETOH, cocaine, heroin or meth. Or food, for the obese.

Common sense approach is lost on our country.
