We have our punt returner!
September 18th, 2021 at 3:13 PM ^
Yes, very nice to see. Not just returns but improving field position by aggressively fielding the punt.
September 18th, 2021 at 3:53 PM ^
Absolutely right. A J was terrific today.
September 18th, 2021 at 3:12 PM ^
I fully expect to see concern over the lack of punting in this thread...
September 18th, 2021 at 3:13 PM ^
Well, hopefully Henning won the punt return spot and will hold on to that after today
September 18th, 2021 at 3:16 PM ^
Waiting to see an all #1 kickoff return team. Call it The Braylon.
September 18th, 2021 at 7:26 PM ^
Please don’t call it the Braylon. Call it the Tyrone Butterfield before you call it the Braylon. It would have to be the Anthony Carter anyway.
September 18th, 2021 at 3:16 PM ^
We kept them to 0 yards on punt returns
September 18th, 2021 at 3:16 PM ^
Running into the kicker.. grrrr although it looked like his plant foot slipped.
September 18th, 2021 at 3:18 PM ^
I like having Henning as our punt returner.
September 18th, 2021 at 3:21 PM ^
Looked like Jay was ripping into the player who great called for illegal block in the back...
September 19th, 2021 at 4:56 AM ^
If the call was correct, it was Andrew Russell. Someone I know that was very near the sideline claimed the player started jawing a little bit to Jay and Jay had to be told to walk away by Jim twice. The first instance was caught on TV where both Hart and Jay appear to take issue with what ever was said and then Jim tells Jay to walk away.
Apparently it didn't end there and a similar scene happened moments later. No idea what was or wasn't said on either side but on TV it looks like Jay said something to the effect of
"That's f*cking bulls*it" to the player before being told to walk away.
Maybe hard coaching, maybe a player with a bit of a smart mouth, maybe both, maybe neither...but it appears there was a bit of an incident, however meaningless in the grand scheme.

A J Henning has effectively replaced Ronnie Bell on punt and or kick off returns. Great kicking, only needed one punt. One complaint, seeing two #1s out there which was pretty much a turnover and led to NIU's only TD. Special teams gets an A- because of that and I'll take it.
September 18th, 2021 at 4:37 PM ^
Eh. The two #1's was annoying, but it was whatever. That only happened because we were playing 2nd and 3rd teamers on Special teams and trying to get guys on the field that normally arent.
September 18th, 2021 at 6:24 PM ^
Agreed. I also thought that Andrel Anthony's return looked pretty good. I agree with the sentiment on this thread that Henning was outstanding and earned the starting spot, but it's good to know that we have more depth at the position.
September 18th, 2021 at 6:29 PM ^
For sure, I thought that as well. Good to see that a lot of the young wideouts have abilities with the ball. Hopefully those guys can improve their routes and separation and can become bigger playmakers
September 18th, 2021 at 9:55 PM ^
Exactly. If it happens in future games when we have a 60-point lead, I can live with that.
September 19th, 2021 at 5:19 AM ^
I just cannot believe that two players playing with the same number in a blowout at home results in a 5-yard penalty that negates the punt and returns the ball to the kicking team.
A little later, in the Penn State game, an SEC crew tells Franklin that it is 4th down (when it was actually 3rd) and the refs do nothing to compensate the team they screwed out of a down in a situation that could have changed the outcome of the game.
September 18th, 2021 at 3:24 PM ^
Brad Robbins must have been flirting with Harbaugh's daughter or something.
September 18th, 2021 at 3:54 PM ^
Night punting, probably.
September 18th, 2021 at 7:52 PM ^
+1 for Caddyshack reference
September 18th, 2021 at 3:24 PM ^
Perfect with exception of the block in the back on a return, a roughing the kicker & having two #1's on the field at the same time (which led to the TD). #Jaybaugh
September 18th, 2021 at 3:25 PM ^
Special Teams have been outstanding so far this season
September 18th, 2021 at 3:37 PM ^
Silly silly penalties
September 18th, 2021 at 4:22 PM ^
This staff has no commitment to the kicking game. What punter is ever going to want come here? Can't even get on the field on fourth down in garbage time.
September 18th, 2021 at 10:02 PM ^
Yeah, the box score shows UM getting outpunted 337 yards to ZIP! Hope we didn't load up on 5-star punter recruits for their visit roday....
September 18th, 2021 at 4:49 PM ^
I've been very happy with the special teams so far this year. Multiple good returns, haven't given up anything. I'm glad we have people back there who can do something with the ball and shift field position.
September 18th, 2021 at 6:15 PM ^
Henning did a very good job today and he has the speed/potential to take it to the house ?.
September 18th, 2021 at 8:15 PM ^
September 18th, 2021 at 8:04 PM ^
Henning is the answer at PR!!! Moody got so much work he needed an IV after the game!!?
September 18th, 2021 at 8:33 PM ^
Jake Moody is Jake Money
September 18th, 2021 at 8:44 PM ^
Not special enough
September 18th, 2021 at 9:42 PM ^
Henning looks more a threat, but still a little shaky back there.
KO's are booms.
September 18th, 2021 at 9:50 PM ^
I would have liked to see Moody get a crack at a long field goal instead of going for it on 4th. It's always good to practice such things in an actual game.
September 19th, 2021 at 6:47 AM ^
I agree to an extent, but with such a huge lead, there wasn't the kind of pressure there will be in games later in the season.
