Nebraska ATH Luke McCaffrey enters transfer portal

They're also losing captain Kade Warner.

Martinez is only QB left. Scotty is having real roster issues in Lincoln, but that's what happens.

Frost's tenure at Nebraska is eerily similar to Harbaugh minus the earlier success.  He seemed like a can't miss hire and he is struggling everywhere.

Michigan doesn't have what Wisconsin does and that is playing a Big Ten West schedule. Drop Michigan in the West and give Harbaugh the Wisconsin schedule where he doesn't have to play Ohio State every year and you would have seen a lot of wins, trips to Indy with no wins over Ohio State. It's difficult to compare East and West teams because the East is vastly superior.

I'd be more sympathetic to this argument if Wisconsin weren't curb-stomping us when we actually play.

When you think about what it takes to be consistently at the top, it's amazing any school can pull it off. But here the playoff system really, really helps Clemson and Bama and OSU. Every HS kid is going to want to be in the playoffs, and so now those three schools have a huge recruiting advantage. I don't know how that changes unless, maybe, you change the playoffs to 16 schools. Otherwise it's going to be those three in the playoff in perpetuity.

Wisconsin is the interesting school in all this. They don't recruit at our level, but they kick our ass on the field. To me, that points to our deficits in player development and problems in coaching. Hopefully getting rid of Don Brown helps on the latter.

Wisconsin also sticks to the formula with no variation:

HUGE linemen - at least 315 lbs

Fast tb; QB that can throw to a WR down field a few times a game

Stout defense.

That's a recipe for success in the BIG West, but not anywhere else.  they look slow out of conference

Yup. Its mind boggling what Wisconsin does with much less talent. Agree 100%, we seem to be able to develop 3 stars better than 4 or 5 stars, may be its the expectations associated with star rankings. Regardless, I am struggling to identify any 5 star we had who lived up to their billing? But JH has developed plenty of 3 stars into NFL guys.

Same problem as Harbaugh - recruiting.  Fans wants to win now and the only way for immediate success is load up on 5-stars.

I'm by no means a Nebraska, nor do I really know any Nebraska fans to be honest.  But, one thing I will say is I've seen Nebraska play several times in person as the away team and every time I come away impressed by how loyal and respectful they have been as a fan base.  They have always been pleasant and not overtly competitive nor combative with the opposing fans and even generous.  That is a small sample size and a particular kind of fan that travels to away games, but I generally don't get the sense that Nebraska fans have the same expectations as UM fans do.  I my perception is their acceptance of not being elite and winning 10+ games a year seems much higher than UM fans.  But, maybe my perception is way off, IDK.

Maybe tenure was the wrong word.  Clearly Harbaugh has had way more success than Frost.  However, both guys were extremely successful alums that probably had their pick of jobs that chose to go back to their alma mater with great fanfare.  Both programs were down from their heights when the coaches were hired.  Neither coach has been nearly as successful as expected.  Neither coach has made a conference championship.  Both coaches have had a McCaffrey transfer.  We were 2-4 last year.  They were 3-5.  Both fanbases seem very disenchanted with their coach which would have seen like an impossibility when said coach was hired.  No question Harbaugh has been more successful, it is just stunning to me that neither coach has been more successful.

Michigan Harbaugh and Nebraska Scott Frost are not comparable at all. Harbaugh has not only had more winning success but has also had more recruiting success and has sent a lot more players to the NFL. Not counting 2020, Harbaugh's worst season at Michigan was 2017 where he went 8-4 which would be better than Frosts best season at Nebraska.

He didn't seem like a "can't miss" hire at all. Central Florida is arguably the best Group of 5 school in terms of resources in the country. It's not hard to win there . . and win big.

Nebraska isn't the NU of Frost's youth or his playing days. They had a strength program literally 10 years ahead of everyone else (except Va. Tech), could take Prop 48 kids in the old Big 8 and a huge enormous walk-on program. Times change and NU fans have yet to come to grips with that very fact.

Combined, they've got about 100 pass attempts in their careers, a pretty small sample size. But, even assuming they end up as average QBs, there is plenty of winning to be had at the college level. Simply look at osu's success the last 2 decades, winning with better athletes at QB. Hopefully, Harbaugh will figure out how to implement a system that takes advantage of the QB he has. Would not put money on Frost being able to do that.

I agree with this.

Dylan has some impressive speed and wiggle for a guy his size but doesn't throw a good ball at all.

Given his build it's quite inevitable that he'll get broken a lot running the ball.

I haven't seen Luke outside of a couple of plays last season.

Impatience and doubt and humility seem to lead a lot of players to bolt at whatever they perceive as suboptimal. How many non-grad transfers of non-starters leads to successful college careers, and pro careers? I know that Burrow and Fields are great examples against my inquiry, but years ago we used to see a lot of 5-star QBs transfer out of Bama and USC and fail to achieve their bluechip potential. Is QB better or worse than other positions?

Seems like players who are role players or "benched" when they transfer seem to not do as well in the sport going forward. Seems, the key word. Any data out there? Kelly Bryant went from starter at Clemson to being benched for TL to starter at Mizzou to undrafted.

At OL, I know James Hudson is going to be a beast pro, but will Carpenter end up as a pro? I understand his mother's health as a genuine concern for being (kinda) closer to home, but he also implied that UM was not as supportive of him (despite him starting games at a young age as a guy not as highly ranked as others).

Both Dylan and Luke have talent. Luke looks like he can be a very good RB or a dual threat QB. Dylan looks like he could be a great dual threat QB or WR with more meat on his bones.

It is a lot easier to love your coach when you are a room full of less appreciated lower-rated recruits near the same ranking, competing against each other. But when you're a 4 or 5 star going to a struggling program, and you don't see much of the field in place of 2 and 3 star guys, is it the player or the program when they leave?

Are players not realizing their potential because they come in expecting to be fawned over and given priority off ranking (or name recognition)? Are coaches dumb enough to make promises and then not keep their word?

Luke was getting plenty of PT considering how much eligibility he has left.  What we are seeing are talented players going to places where they aren’t going to be part of a dumpster fire.  There is no reason to think that Nebraska or M are going to hold their own in the BIG next year.  Why stay for that?

Also not a great indictment of Mcaffery's either. Perception shows both leaving schools where they were going to have significant roles, yet something pushes them away.  Is it the competition aspect? Frost and Harbaugh too hard on them?  Who knows but the way it looks to me isnt all great for them either...just because you have the name on the back of your jersey sure as shit doesnt mean you are entitled to anything.

Not saying this is the case, Im no insider, but there is some of that perception to me.

Well isnt that the real conundrum with the increasingly available transfer portal option, which will likely be more available with more transfer alternatives in the near future. A 5* athlete already will rarely make it 2-3 yrs with nary a bowl game under their belt and these younger kids who want to play immediately keep looking as if they missed an opportunity to go play for someone else. It is a feeling of power for them I am sure...but it means the coaches cannot really be coaches...its a white glove approach, especially to impatient athletes with entitlement. Don’t get me wrong - most kids are hard workers and dutifully committed as student athletes, but you can definitely see who has the ego... At what point does the NCAA increase both scholarships and roster slots becasue of the more available transfer option? Or is it a net zero with anyone available at any time...it completely undermines the recruitment  process and the exhaustion the coaches go through at every cycle year after year.

Set up a system where you can pick from 5 schools max. With a minimum of a 2-3 year commitment, or graduation or something. Then offer a single chance to transfer. Once. That’s it. And there should be a series of boxes checked to allow this transfer - those boxes should be written by athletes and coaches and institutions along with the. NCAA. I dont mean to make it insufferable, but at least dont make it easy as pie. I get it - some kids get homesick, hate the cold, get buried on the depth chart, etc. but It seems that Michigan has been trying to rebuild its program for aver a decade now, and just cant get to where we used to be in the Carr era, next man up. Yes we’ve had to rebuild the roster several times with several types of systems. I think that is also part of our collective ‘we’ve lost our damn patience...’

rambling now... sry...

I'll be honest, I'm amazed Frost has been this bad at Nebraska.  I always thought he was a bit overrated based on the historical trends for UCF when he came on, but Nebraska was arguably better  and had a brighter future under Riley than Frost at this point.
