NBA Combine Report: Our Guys Shoot Well

Submitted by BursleyHall82 on May 18th, 2019 at 7:34 PM

Didn't see an NBA Combine report from yesterday, but all our guys shot well in the drills. You'll find all the stats HERE.

In the scrimmages, for some reason, Poole decided not to play, and some reports said that's hurting his stock. Iggy and Charles each played in two scrimmages, and here's their stat lines:

MATTHEWS

Game 1

3-8 FG, 1-3 3PT, 7 pts, 5 reb

Game 2

2-5 FG, 0-2 3PT, 4 pts, 6 reb

IGGY

Game 1

3-9 FG, 1-3 3PT, 7 pts, 9 reb

Game 2

5-9 FG, 0-2 3PT, 11 pts, 4 reb

Honestly I still just feel sick to my stomach thinking about the team. Congrats to them but man I'm bumming hard still

Pooles stock should drop if he skipped the scrimmages.  For his whining that he wasnt being used in the Beilein offense, this was his chance to show what he could do in a different system.

You may be right, but I've not seen him on any mock drafts in the first round, meaning he very well may be relying on a second-round selection and that feels a bit dubious.

That said, I don't think scrimmages mean all that much.  If you're drafting Poole, you're hoping that he can turn into a consistent shooter from outside and improve enough defensively to see the court 10-12 minutes a game and not cost you a lead.  He's got that potential, but he's not close to that yet.

There's no possible way he's going first round.  I buy that someone will take a flier on him in the second round, though.

I'm bullish on his talent.  I think someone takes a chance with him.  And if he figures out how to focus and do what his coach wants, he could definitely stick in the NBA.

I doubt that Poole is skipping scrimmage based on 2nd round pick promise. If there's a promise, it's at 1st round, not 2nd round. Teams never promise a prospect that they'll take them at 2nd round.

At this time of the year, a bunch of Michigan fans were shitting on DJ Wilson for declaring early and they said he will get undrafted or don't get drafted at 1st round when in fact he got drafted at 17th overall pick. Mock draft didn't have DJ Wilson at 1st round but those are just mock drafts, not NBA teams draft.

People questioned Wilson going in the lottery, but a number of mock drafts had him in the first round.

He definitely helped his stock at the combine, but a very tall, very athletic kid with legit 3 point range and good defensive chops is way more appealing to the NBA than an inconsistent shooter with limited defensive upside.

I want Poole to succeed, but people are also seemingly ignoring a lot of evidence that he's going to have an uphill climb to make it in the NBA.

Looking through the drills, Poole can shoot pretty well.

But we knew that. When he took good shots he shot well. When he took shots from Krazy Jim's Blimpy Burger and bizarre fadeaways he shot poorly.

Iggy's showing was decent, too.

And, dude, I didn't know Jordan Bone was going to win all of the drills.

Yes he is.  No argument even exists.  Kid was forced to take some shitty shots this year and people like think he was just a poor decision maker but can't realize how bogged down the offense could get and forced a guy like Poole to jack up some not-so-great looks.

Good looks, the kid is probably a ~40% 3pt shooter.

He is a great shooter.  Excellent shooter.  And I agree that he would be a 40%+ shooter with improved looks.

But he wasn't forced into so many bad looks, he brought most of that upon himself.  Most of his bad jacks occured with 10+ seconds on the shot clock.  Iggy played in the same offense, carried more of the usage burden, and managed to make better shot selection decisions.

Poole was both an excellent shooter and a sometimes iffy decision maker.

I mean, these aren't terrible numbers but they certainly aren't great.  I wouldn't say "our guys shoot well".  They were 2-10 from 3.

Also, Poole taking more career step back threes.  I can see him vanishing for 2-3 years and then emerging as some random bench microwave.

Can't remember who it was, but some talking head/writer said he thought Matthew's looked like the best guard/wing defender there over the course of the scrimmages.

I don’t know much about the NBA, but it really is a super star dominated league more so than other sports.  I think a lot of people forget that while the best teams have 1 or 2 big stars, there are other guys who contribute to each team.  I don’t think any of the three will be big stars, but I do think that they could each carve out their own role.  I would not be surprised if Matthews has the longest career of the 3 of them.

That isn’t shooting well. At least not in scrimmages. It’s not a shock. None of these guys are pure or even above average shooters in game situations. Stop spreading false hype. Please.
