National Championship game factoids
Since the BCS in 1998, there have been 26 national championship win-it-all finals.
- Michigan is the 14th team to win a national championship since the BCS/Playoff format
- Michigan and Washington were the 19th/20th teams to play for a natty
- Michigan breaks the streak of SEC/Clemson champs and is the first non-such team to win in 9 years. OSU was the last. Only 3 other teams have even played in such games, all losers (OSU, TCU, UW)
- Michigan is one of only 3 teams to be undefeated in the final (cheeky I know, the others are Tenn 1-0 and UF 2-0)
- Michigan is in with 6 other teams to have played for only one 'ship. 6 teams have played in 2 finals, 6 teams have played for 3-5 championships. One has played in 9 of these games 🤯
- Michigan is in a group with 6 others to have one championship. 7 teams have more than one. 6 teams have played for one but never reached the peak
- In the past ten years, SEC+Clemson have gone 8-6 in the final, the rest of the ACC 0-0, PAC 0-2, Big XII 0-1, Big Ten 2-1
- Noter Dame has never won a BCS/Playoff final and played in only one (2012) and were memorably blown out
Here is an ugly "visualization" of each year, grouped by conference. Most conclusions are rather sad, but it is interesting that the SEC barely got a sniff in the first third of the period.

interesting factoid
Michigan out rushed Washington 303 to 46 (measured in yards)

More interesting factoid:
Michigan rushed for 303 yards. Washington offensed for 301 yards.
Yes, Michigan's rush game ran for more yards than Washington's entire offense offensed for.

What kind of Rutger is that?

More-more interesting factoid:
Michigan’s running backs (with the help of James “Doink” Turner) scored 14 points each.
Washington’s offense scored 13.

Should that be known as a rushing Ferentz?

Nioce... so all we needed to do was hand the ball to Edwards 2 times and the game was over.

Also, Edwards and Corum each rushed for 100+ yards and 2 touchdowns - a feat that had only been accomplished twice before in a CFP title game.
Michigan became the first team in CFP title game history to have two rushers of over 100 yards.
Michigan's 303 yards rushing was a CFP title game record and relegated OSU to #2.

I believe Washington's offense ran for like 2.5 ypc and passed for 5.0 ypa. That is a locker stuffing and the defense will never get enough credit for it because it never looks sexy when you just see a QB standing back in the pocket with ?? over his head as the pocket quickly collapses. They whooped em

Too bad MSU didn’t make it so we could all have the one team shut out and beaten by the greatest differential.

Eh, I'm OK with that.

I get that Nebraska is in the Big Ten now, but they were not in the Big Ten when they played in the BCS Title Game against Miami (who was still in the Big East along with Va Tech). That happened a decade before Nebraska joined the Big Ten.

On your third bullet point you list the three teams to have reached this game once and lost and have OSU listed among them. This should be Oregon, right?
January 9th, 2024 at 9:18 PM ^
I meant in the last 9 years, during the recent SEC/Clemson 8 year streak, only three non-SEC/Clemson teams have even made the final, OSU 2020, TCU 2022, UW 2023. In the 9th year we are in, UM broke the streak of SEC/Clemson champs.

Oh I see now. Thank you for the clarification

Fun Fact: I’m watching the game right now. Penix got beat up by a salty D.

Personally I think of this timeframe as two separate eras - the BCS era and the 4 team CFP era

My favorite stat that highlights the defensive performance. Washington scored 13 points on 13 possessions!

That chart is carcinogenic.

I drank a third of a bottle of scotch.

The chart should really account for what conference a team was in when they made these appearances and got these wins.

Which is worse, natty or 'ship?
