Moderator Action Sticky 2021

THREAD'S DONE. MOVE ON TO THE NEXT ONE: https://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/moderator-action-sticky-2022

Sharing Trolls Counts as Trolling: Sometimes desperately lazy outlets hire trolls, or trolls who are good at social media build enough of a following, that they become a headache for us, spreading hate or falsehoods. Because having them repeated on our site can directly harm us, if you're on the message board you should be aware that posting something from them could get you banned. They are:

  • SirYacht/Chat Sports/James Yoder - Fake news merchant who likes to make up plausible rumors or report non-sure things to get a false scoop.
  • Any local Spartan media when they talk about Michigan. Unless they're yelling "MAKE PLAYS!"
  • Pete Finebaum: FoxNews for SEC fans. Occasionally useful to them but the only times he's intersecting with us is when he's carrying Saban's water.
  • Rainer Sabin: Finebaum wannabe hired by the Freep to troll Michigan fans.
  • Steve Deace: Curiously well-funded white supremacist radio host who's got such a small Michigan following you can safely assume anyone posting positively about him is Deace and ban him again. Creates lots of burner accounts to promote himself. Recently booted by Maven for advocating lynching.
  • Barstool: People who took the freedom of young internet too seriously because really what they wanted to do the whole time was propagate bad ideas.

Any chance the mods could move the "OT: USMNT Update" thread into the diaries. It's really an exceptional thread and obviously took the author quite a bit of time. Seems like the kind of thing that should hang around the front page for more than half a day.

I removed the thread "What is going on with the sale of ammunition ?"

The OP (Walmart Wolverine) included a couple thinly-veiled political comments within his opening post. Sorry (not sorry), but it's an absolute "NO GO!" on the MGoBoard for any thread that immediately goes political.

Eli is a troll. He is constantly interjecting politics and conspiracy theory into previously apolitical posts. It also sounds like from others his religious shtick is more recent and probably a cover he can use to not get banned.  Though I can’t go back into view older posts.  Most of his posts are clearly trolling though.

No, you cannot use sermonizing and / or proselytizing as a cover to avoid banishment. It's one thing to be rather religious, and perhaps he is, but preaching to people isn't appropriate in mixed company and neither are several of his other posts really, perusing the user history. He's blocked.

Dunno if this belongs here but didn’t think it was thread-worthy. Site loading times seem to be quite slow for me on the main mgoboard page only - 20-25 seconds to get the board to load up lately. Seems odd given there’s not much content to load there. Not sure if anyone else is having that issue but seems to only affect me on this site? Just thought I’d toss it out there in case anyone else has the issue as well or if it was an easy fix. Safari browser on iOS 14

I'm getting a full screen pop ad that I need to close out of when I click on some threads today.  Just FYI

The “No drinking thread” miss XM thread may not require any banning, but there’s a lot of political tap dancing and the general division and vitriol assumed by anything regarding the great XM banning of 2021.

The Rabbit Guy or whatever is screen name is told Ace to eff off. No matter how mad you are or disagree with how he handled a particular situation I do think that is crossing the line. Especially on the blog he writes for. Then again, the fact that it got 54 net upvotes is a sign there's a lot of animosity towards Ace.

So I'm way out of the loop. Did Ace release personal information about XM based on the email address he used to register his account on the blog?

If so, yikes. Can I rescind the email address I used to register my account on this site like 9 years ago? I didn't know I needed to be concerned about all that..

DetroitBlue

May 9th, 2021 at 7:57 PM ^

If you consider ‘white guy from Traverse City’ to be personal information, then yes - he did. Then again, since TC is pretty much 100% white, and half its population (give or take) fits that description - if you consider that ‘doxxing’ or ‘release of personal info’ then you probably ate lots of paint chips as a kid.

No. This is the tweet that Ace sent about banning him - https://twitter.com/AceAnbender/status/1379804719464452102

I'd love for someone to actually explain the personal information released here. Tell me how "white guy from Traverse City" is doxxing someone

The "An Honest Football Assessment" thread should probably be taken down as it violates the Steve Deace rule.

Also. user like Patrick_Star (maybe secretly Deace) is using to push the narative that conservatives are being silenced because white supremacy is not allowed here.

Are the mods covering up what went down on Friday in the drinking thread? Officer Rabbit, an OSU fan, a troll, and who said in reference to one of the writers here, "fuck him" was neither banned nor sent to Bolivia or had any account restrictions added. As of yesterday he was continuing to troll.

Did Rob F just delete all the comments that were offensive to Ace and leave it at that? Accounts are consistently negged or banned for bad behavior around here so it's pretty suspicious what happened. The removal of said material also happened around the same time that Rob F showed up on the thread. What's going on around here?

Well, I am the one that cleaned up the thread a bit - I actually did so again after you mentioned that he was still at it as I had not been back to it for a day or so.

As for a coverup, there is none that I am aware of, although the idea of this being the blog version of "Three Days Of The Condor"  or something like that seems like a really awesome twist. I simply took out parts of the thread - not just his posts - that were rather over the top. I still have it open now, in fact, having seen this particular complaint.

I'll take a look at his posting history though, when I have a longer moment, unless there is something worth pointing out specifically.

-366 MgoPoints (as of now), 12 years a member.. and I'm the troll? I was critical of Ace's decision, and (you, yourself) brought up how many upvotes the post recieved.. clearly I'm not here posting an opinion that is broadly disagreed with... which would be a troll move.

Have I been vocal about XM's banning, absolutely. He was one of the reason's I enjoyed this blog.. friendly commentary, a view from the opposite side, and general banter about all things life, and BIG sports related. Did he hold some views I didn't agree with... yes... just as I hold views you don't agree with.. clearly.

If a difference of opinion means banishment to Bolivia.. then so be it. But have a respectfull discussion about it.. don't run to the Mod Sticky every time your feelings get hurt.

Calling someone "a troll" because you don't agree with what they're saying is no better than being an actual troll in and of itself.

Hope this is put to bed now.

When writing comments in the text box feature (Samsung phone) it seems that sometimes hitting the normal "delete" key will erase the last paragraph or more rather than just the last character.  I do not know if it is the Samsung keyboard at fault or the site, but I can only recall it happening here.

Very frustrating when trying to write a longer comment and then substantial portions disappear (with no "undo" feature).

Is anyone else seeing this?

User is verging on inflammatory: https://mgoblog.com/users/detroitblue

Just in the past few days alone, has posted several ad hominems against other posters (with one poster just getting banned last night for responding in-kind to said ad hominem).    In general has also exacerbated many of the political arguments on the board as well.

Potential O$U sanctions coming? Presser @ 1530 today

Doing the $ thing in the headline sealed it. Please follow up with the contents of the presser; speculating in this manner is just asking for egg on the face.

May 13th, 2021 at 3:48 PM ^

Hard to share the contents of a press conference that had not happened yet.  I would have been happy to update as details came out.  Either way,  I'll be sure not to use the dollar sign when referencing OSU.  Does this same policy adhere to comments made with a $?  If so, you have some work to do.  Yikes.

Seth

Given what it turned out to be I'm glad we didn't leave the thread up. I can't really control stuff like "O$U" in the comments even though it irks me, but I'll take them down in message board titles because those will be visible on the front page of MGoBlog and I want this to be the site that at least appears above that sort of thing.

Detroit Blue.

Apparently I am not the first one to report him as he is within this very same moderator thread being reported AND calling someone names (again).

He is constantly abusive and personally attacking other posters.

These are only examples I found in 30 seconds.  He (I assume he), is toxic.

DetroitBlue

May 13th, 2021 at 12:44 PM ^

That was to a guy who’s admittedly been kicked off the blog 10ish times for trolling, most recently a few weeks ago for stirring up more shit and personally attacking multiple posters/mods/blog writers, but sure - I’m the ‘toxic’ one.

Can we get an IP check on PerfectPair?  That's an IP check on PerfectPair?

Seriously, the dissonance between your join date and MGoPoint count and your comfortability with the general vibe of the blog and knowledge about things most new users don't even bother to pick up on (skimming a user's past posting history, for example) suggests long-running participation here on the blog.  Funny enough your first post was in a covid discussion and your recent contributions have been strongly critical of those running this place.  Strong indications of an alt account or a recently returned poster from Bolivia who found a 5-spot in the couch.

I just now finished taking a long look at the posting history of "PerfectPair" and I fully agree.

Though I'm essentially stepping away from the board for a few days to spend time with family, I'm very close right now to banning him. Thinking it thru right now even as I post this...

(edit @8 pm) He's banned.

His comment equating vaccinations, masking up, and other covid precautions with  The Holocaust and being marked with the Star of David was a bridge too far.

I'm going to address a few things here and then excuse myself from modding and participating on the board for a few days.

1) A note to MGoUser "DetroitBlue": I've been taking note of more and more use of personal attacks in disagreements with others on the board, both on your part  and on the part of a few others who counterattack.  Please ratchet it down a notch or two.

The vast majority of the time I have no problem with your comments and opinions.  OTOH, expressing yourself can be done with a little less vitriol.  Let's give it a try.

-------------------------------

2) Regarding the "META: Where'd today's front page Podcast go?" thread and the attacks on Ace:

First of all, thank you Seth for stepping in and editing the OP and locking up the thread.

I got negged numerous times and probably will continue to be negged for questioning why some feel it's necessary to jump in yet again to attack Ace.  I even posted a link encouraging everyone to read Seth's Twitter response to Ace so as to know 'the rest of the story'.  How about having some actual awareness of the discussion rather than reactively grabbing for your torches and pitchforks?

Well, go right ahead and neg away, if it makes you feel better!  Only one MGoUser (Jmer) took the time to post an answer to me and a +1 to him for doing so and not instead hiding behind his keyboard.

------------------------------

3) Sorry if this post is a little salty.  However, I lost another beloved relative yesterday, my Mom's brother Uncle Bud died at age 89. He's the sixth elderly relative I've lost in the last 8 months.

A wonderful man, he was one who always took the time to spend quality time when the opportunity arose. A bridge engineer by trade, even in semi-retirement some 15 years ago he jumped at the opportunity to show off and explain the bridge-building process by giving my son's Cub Scout Troop a guided tour of a large bridge project his company was working on.  He could have sent one of his employees but instead conducted the tour himself at age 74, donning a hardhat and passing out hardhats to each of the scouts, climbing on, over, and under the construction site with a very attentive young audience.  The kids absolutely loved it!

End result:  At least 3 of those scouts now have engineering careers.  I'd like to think he had some amount of influence on them that day.

Rest in Peace, Uncle Bud.

Rob F, I’m very sorry for your loss.

I hear you and I’m sorry my inability to suffer fools gladly has cost you time, effort and frustration. Thanks for the warning; I’ll try to tone it down and do better going forward.
