Moderator Action Sticky 2021

THREAD'S DONE. MOVE ON TO THE NEXT ONE: https://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/moderator-action-sticky-2022

--------------------------------------

Sharing Trolls Counts as Trolling: Sometimes desperately lazy outlets hire trolls, or trolls who are good at social media build enough of a following, that they become a headache for us, spreading hate or falsehoods. Because having them repeated on our site can directly harm us, if you're on the message board you should be aware that posting something from them could get you banned. They are:

  • SirYacht/Chat Sports/James Yoder - Fake news merchant who likes to make up plausible rumors or report non-sure things to get a false scoop.
  • Any local Spartan media when they talk about Michigan. Unless they're yelling "MAKE PLAYS!"
  • Pete Finebaum: FoxNews for SEC fans. Occasionally useful to them but the only times he's intersecting with us is when he's carrying Saban's water.
  • Rainer Sabin: Finebaum wannabe hired by the Freep to troll Michigan fans.
  • Steve Deace: Curiously well-funded white supremacist radio host who's got such a small Michigan following you can safely assume anyone posting positively about him is Deace and ban him again. Creates lots of burner accounts to promote himself. Recently booted by Maven for advocating lynching.
  • Barstool: People who took the freedom of young internet too seriously because really what they wanted to do the whole time was propagate bad ideas.

I just deleted two threads:

1) Kim Mulkey covid testing thread.---the thread quickly devolved into the same old same old arguments that we've been seeing for months with the same old battle lines drawn.

2) The F*ck the NCAA reason#527 thread.

With as many negvotes as comments in the first several minutes (and those comments strongly trending against the OP), I decided to quickly pull the plug.

Yeah. This was really out of line. I don't always agree with banning people, but when I do it's because of comments like this:

Who cares, second rate sports.  But if they want to make money, sex sells, which seems to be where many of them cater to.

Thanks, MGoCue and crg.

I've temporarily been w/o my MGoControl buttons until just minutes ago.

To make a long story as short as possible, my phone died 2 days ago.  I had to manually restore every damn thing (other than what I had linked to Google) with a new phone, and then I apparently wiped out several things including my MGoLinks when I was trying to fix some Twitter settings on my new phone after restoring my Twitter app earlier today.

And of course, the links to the needed moderator buttons are on my Twitter account; whenever I'm away from my home & laptop, I'm dependant upon my phone to moderate anything.

---------------------------

At this point I'm going to let the thread run its course and die out on its own.

Man, that stinks.  Sorry you had to go through all that rob.  Thanks for the reply.

I certainly look forward to this thread working it’s way off the board.  It was created by a long time poster who knew exactly what he was starting.  It also has as much misinformation as any COVID thread that we have seen over the last year.

M Go Cue

April 2nd, 2021 at 9:11 PM ^

With all due due respect it clearly violates the no politics rule regardless of who started it.  Long time posters here know exactly what they’re starting when they create a thread like this.

Nothing ever gets resolved.  Just a group of Michigan fans slinging shit at each other.

From the FAQ:

UNWELCOME, KTHX

  • Politics
  • Drew Sharp, Ace Williams, Mike Valenti. Saying stupid and/or false things about Michigan in order to get Michigan fans upset is a tried and true way to phish for clicks. Let's not feed the trolls.
  • Bewbs/Objectification of women. Whatever misogynistic "standard guy stuff" gets tolerated on other sports sites you visit will NOT fly here.

Did you read the thread?  When multiple people are railing against things in the bill that aren’t in the bill, that’s misinformation.  The thread is full of that kind of garbage.  No disrespect to the mods but the thread is a 200 comment shit show and a clear violation of the no politics rule.

Mustachioed Gentleman took it political and F5 took the bait. I deleted the part of the thread that led to that exchange. Both longtime users put in Bolivia, have been emailed. No second chance.

PATIENCE, PLEASE???

Sorry.

Was just asking the question.  Not trying to pressure or rush anyone.

My cite of a weeks old comment by you was to illustrate a track record, not nag you.

Thanks for the work you do here.

... continued:

Yes, " Blue Me" is way out of line and may end up being banned.

"Walmart Wolverine" was also out of line by posting his OP without taking a good look at the photo he posted and other photos of the deceased that I and obviously others have seen from that game.  Mr Ratliff clearly has the mask under his chin and very likely pulled it down for the photographer.

Other thread participants are out of line with their same tired arguments and sniping that followed.

Yes, I'm a little pissed off about it all and at you for your lack of patience with your remarks. If you want the truth, I'd prefer to be sleeping right now rather than having to address this late night shitshow, OK?

I gave my recommendations to Seth, I'm leaving the post up so that he has time to inspect it (assuming he's sleeping at this hour), so it may be there until morning.

That's all the explanation I owe you at this moment.

As for everyone else, can't we PLEASE tone it down a bit??  Opening eyes and engaging the brain is usually a much nicer and better option than jumping to conclusions, as some in the thread obviously did.

Yes covid is dangerous. It has cost the lives of well over a half-million of our fellow countrymen and women. And I'm not going to post the links here, but for those so inclined to do the research, there's plenty of evidence that we are far from out of the woods.

Cases in Michigan are skyrocketing; a new and scary Brazilian variant is threatening to completely derail the Vancouver Canucks, etc., etc., etc.

I get it and the vast majority here get it---we're all damn sick and tired of the pandemic and of all the suffering at every level.  But why do some have to attack each other over and over about it?  After all, isn't this a sports blog celebrating The University of Michigan?

I think I'm dealing with a very intelligent bunch here but find it VERY frustrating when some don't show it.

Good night all.

“After all, isn't this a sports blog celebrating The University of Michigan?”

So with you on all of your points, and especially this one. If we could go back to the old days of “no politics” that essentially included “no news and just sports” that would be... super (and make this place so much better). I would safely bet the VAST majority of these things that eat up your (and the other mods’) time falls under the politics and/or non-sports need umbrella, which didn’t used to be a thing here...

PostScript:

Users "Walmart Wolverine" and "Blue Me" both take a major hit on their MGoPoints.

Obviously, "WW", you won't be posting an OP for some time, but if and when you get back to that level, it's on you to refrain from posting incendiary threads. In this particular instance, it took me mere seconds to spot the facemask below the chin of the deceased.

"Blue Me": next serious violation, you're outta here.  Not only did you 1)not spot the mask, and 2)take the bait, but you then made it much worse with your take (which, in turn, stirred up numerous others).

[Video surfaces of Darius Morris domestic assault]

I edited the title and removed the link. For the record we don't have a set policy on this. The operating policy right now is to try to follow as best I can the wishes of the victim, act in accords with my own moral conscience, and serve the needs of law enforcement, in that order.

WHAT IS THE APPEAL PROCESS? Post here (start a new account if you were banned).

I recently learned that my points got whacked and only now found this thread

While I will accept the penalty if I must, I disagree with the characterization of my intent.  To me the topic was relevant and not intentionally incendiary.  If you think the OP was garbage, that's fine, but if it was about my claim that Ratliff didn't appear to like to mask up that wasn't a random accusation.  I was aware that he had a mask under his chin

While the photos I saw were embedded in articles that are now behind paywalls, there are at least four distinct photos here where he was similarly unmasked in venues where others were masked up

https://tinyurl.com/23uxytpz

And no, I am not happy that the kid is dead

I would like the penalty reconsidered, however

Denied.

Whatever your intentions were when posting your OP about the death of Ratliff, this was a post that was nearly 100% certain to result in controversy; thus my statement that the post was incendiary.  I don't believe I stated that it was your intent to inflame the MGoBoard, but in light of the fact that he had a mask under his chin in the pic you posted, you  shouldn't have posted. The assumption conveyed was that Ratliff was anti-mask.  He was simply and obviously posing for pictures and video.

You've obviously been on the board long enough to know how to read the room and know how quickly this particular thread would be derailed.

It is the responsibility of the OP to get it right when posting an OP on any subject, controversial or not.

I had a DM conversation yesterday morning with Seth regarding this situation and other board matters. To be direct and brief in summary of our discussion,  I indicated to him my plans (and Seth approved) to be quicker to lock or delete threads---when I see them, that is---I was out on a bike trail several miles from home when I stopped for water & peeked at my phone and first noticed one of the covid threads I eventually deleted earlier this week.

This in particular goes for most covid discussions that don't directly pertain to the University of Michigan, and it also goes for anything that directly violates "no politics" issues.

Darius Morris is a TRASH "human being" woman beater!

This one has already been on the board. Again, I must remind the OP that most major news - especially something like this - is going to make it here rather quickly. Your window to be the first person to mention it, in fact, may have been mere seconds.

Michigan Football AT msu the Next 2 Seasons In-a-Row.....

The Big Ten hasn't announced its reworked schedules since the IU-MSU flipback. We fully expect MSU to remain a Michigan home game on even years, because that was the whole point of flipping those games. MSU was on board (as was IU) because it sucked for them to get Michigan and Ohio State at home the same year.

Why was XtraMelanin banned?

Xtramelanin got banned for going full anti-vaccine truther. The specific comments were taken down to destroy the thread. Trying to use our site to share lies that could get people killed and extend the pandemic is right at the top of no-doubt bannable offenses.

He then wrote us a nasty and extremely baseless email threatening legal action and defamation if we don't fire Ace.

Regarding privacy:

Here's our Privacy policy: https://mgoblog.com/content/mgoblog-privacy-policy

It's under the "About" tab. Pertinent part:

E-mail Communications

MGoBlog will never provide your email address to a third party without your explicit permission, as detailed in the "Sharing Your Information" section below. MGoBlog may send out e-mails with MGoBlog-related news, products, offers, surveys or promotions.

Exception: Severely abusive posters may have their email addresses released.

And

Sharing Your Information

MGoBlog will neither rent nor sell your personal information to anyone. We will share your personal information only as described below.

MGoBlog Personnel: MGoBlog personnel and authorized consultants and/or contractors may have access to user information if necessary in the normal course of MGoBlog business.

Business Transfers: In some cases, we may choose to buy or sell assets. In these types of transactions, user information is typically one of the business assets that is transferred. Moreover, if MGoBlog, or substantially all of its assets, were acquired, user information would be one of the assets that is transferred.

Protection of MGoBlog and Others: We may release personal information when we believe in good faith that release is necessary to comply with a law; to enforce or apply our Terms of Use and other policies; or to protect the rights, property, or safety of MGoBlog, our employees, our users, or others. This includes exchanging information with other companies and organizations for fraud protection and credit risk reduction.

I am certain that the offending post's potential to inflict lasting physical harm or death on other readers was a big part of the consideration to ban.

Where did the thread go?

I deleted (see: "Cumbrously long") because this is the mod action sticky and that's what happens when these discussions are over. Any questions about moderator action on XM are addressed here.

What about the tweet?

Any questions about things addressed outside of the message board, including Ace's tweets, should be directed elsewhere, because this is an Arby's. I'm not in a position to handle that.

What are we doing about COVID threads?

Make a value judgment, lean to locking. Information that helps people find a vaccination site is of value. Information pertinent to Michigan athletics is valuable. If the CDC pauses one of its vaccines because there's a miniscule chance it's causing blood clots and they need to know why, that's valuable, but kill the comments.

We do not want to be a hindrance to the ending of this pandemic.

And politics in general?

Discussed above, and do your best.

would just point out the following text on your user profile/settings page:

The email address is not made public and will only be used if you wish to receive a new password or wish to receive certain news or notifications by email.

does not seem to include looking up personal information about a user and tweeting about it.

Hi Seth,

There is just one thing I think you should amend on your statement here, for clarity if nothing else:

From all accounts, the nasty email that XM wrote was done *after* Ace put out a rather insulting tweet about him.  Had the banning been more conventional/discreet, the vitriolic response probably doesn't occur.

Just my $0.02

I think I get it. He's a bit low, so he's left leaving and resigned from resigning. He's still resigning, mind you, but he's resigned from the actual process of resigning now apparently. I applaud the effort to make a clean break of it honestly.

Thanks, Detroit Blue.

"Murderwolflives2" is gone, he even pleaded to be banned in his penultimate post.

Not sure what got under his skin tonight and why he decided to unload on me and others, as I haven't had any dealings with him since his previous banning.

All I know is that I'm NOT the one who peed in his corn flakes yesterday and/or today.  Then again, maybe that's why he's mad at me.
