Moderator Action Sticky 2020

[LOCKED. Time for a new thread, which is here]

Please don't post on here unless it's for Moderator Actions because they get cumbrously long.

--------------------------------------

REMINDER THAT SHARING TROLLS COUNTS AS TROLLING: Sometimes desperately lazy outlets hire trolls, or trolls who are good at social media build enough of a following, that they become a headache for us, spreading hate or falsehoods. Because having them repeated on our site can directly harm us, if you're on the message board you should be aware that posting something from them could get you banned. They are:

  • SirYacht/Chat Sports/James Yoder - Fake news merchant who likes to make up plausible rumors or report non-sure things to get a false scoop.
  • Any local Spartan media when they talk about Michigan. Unless they're yelling "MAKE PLAYS!"
Pete Finebaum: FoxNews for SEC fans. Occasionally useful to them but the only times he's intersecting with us is when he's carrying Saban's water.
  • Rainer Sabin: Finebaum wannabe hired by the Freep to troll Michigan fans.
  • Steve Deace: Curiously well-funded white supremacist radio host who's got such a small Michigan following you can safely assume anyone posting positively about him is Deace and ban him again. Running joke among Michigan media members because he creates lots of burner accounts to promote himself. Type of person who plays the "they hate me for my politics" card in hopes someone's dumb enough to switch their morning breakfast cereal to flavorless cardboard flakes to own the libs. Recently booted by Maven for advocating lynching.
  • Barstool: People who took the freedom of young internet too seriously because really what they wanted to do the whole time was propagate bad ideas.

Everything in that terrorist plot thread is going to get a review, in retrospect I wish I had seen it earlier but haven't been on the board since this morning.

I read thru the first 4 full pages of it last night and then dozed off for most of the 3rd quarter of the Bucs-Bears game (likely cause was overindulging on the delicious Zain's Pizza I had picked up). I did send one to Bolivia (for being too "Infectious" with his trolling).

I'll look at the rest of it, but a quick glance showed me that much of it was sniping at "Alaskan Yedi" by a few others (which in turn pulled in a couple of trolls) and the thread had run its course. At that point why let it continue to fester?

rob f

It went on and on and on.  I didn't exactly exonerate Yedi, did I?  You said that in your mind (in so many words) that it wasn't such a bad thread. And my response was that, among other things, I wasn't going to let the thread continue to fester.

As for the trolls,I've already banned one and gave a warning to another with a relatively new account after his previous account had been banned.

Not saying you exonerated him, just that your phrasing made me wonder who you thought was at fault for that portion of the thread.

On a board that has to be subjectively moderated, it's helpful to understand what the moderator finds objectionable.

Which is also why I asked about Damone and others have asked about umbig11. They both do things that got WolverineDevotee banned(which I agree with Ace on), but they're still here.

And I've got too much free time because of Covid, so I partially fill it on here when my lesson schedule is light.

I thought I'd try something different, so I went experimental with ham, bacon, and mushrooms, piled high as usual. Delicious!

I learned a few Zain's pizzas ago not to go with double anything because (I'm not exaggerating much) it's not easy to eat a slice so thick you end up dislocating your jaw trying to get it far enough open.

I blocked a bunch of new accounts that are clearly spammers who found a way around our security system. We're working on a fix but for the moment I'd appreciate it if the mods would make a pass through admin/people once a day and check new accounts to see if any are obviously spammers or flamers.

Most have an innocuous-sounding name, stay quiet for a few weeks, then unleash spam in a bunch of old threads. Legit accounts almost always have a post right away (since people mostly start accounts to reply to something that interests them) but I don't want to shut down accounts that have committed no crime unless we know for sure they're spammers (or if they create a political name because that's always a prelude to flaming).

The 2nd sentence of Seth's opening post to the "Mod Sticky" thread asks everyone to refrain from doing what you just did.

Please don't post on here unless it's for Moderator Actions because they get cumbrously long.

--------------------------------------

(edit: And yes, this pertains to everyone, myself included)

In addition, I just also blocked two new spammers,  "DonnaStop" and "Diana Lemke". Both opened new accounts and then proceeded to drop spam in old threads.

Reading through the Moderator Action Sticky is like reading all of shop-smart-shop-s-mart's petty grievances.

Meanwhile, the guy is an A-Level Troll who constantly bashes anyone who doesn't believe like he does, anyone who dares to speak up about being a Conservative ANYTHING, and then reports anyone who contradicts him.

And then even bashes the moderators which was a reason some others got banned:

"Same reason xtramelanin was able to spread conspiracy theories and randomly bring up abortion to try and score cheap points. Being friends with a moderate or writer gets you special treatment."

Funny that he says that while his constant trolling, brow-beating, and name-calling go unpunished and he gets the "special treatment".

Sounds deserving of Bolivia based on RobF's concerns about those attacking moderators personally.

Fair enough. Plus OT and we're coming up on the season. However . . . "this was presented in figntin' words." Give me a primer on how you would present it. Don't worry, I won't repost. However, I was totally ignorant of the meaning of "land grant." That is to say, I somewhat always assumed that various States granted land in a beneficent way. I had no idea how this screwed indigenous peoples. And I kinda think that's something worth knowing. My guess is that most people are ignorant and unaware, and a majority of Michigan students, alums, and fans, are also ignorant and unaware. And I think awareness of what happened is a key part of being a thoughtful and sensitive adult and citizen. Thoughts?

I attended high school in the early 70's, and can remember learning about the Trail of Tears and other parts of the forced relocation of Indigenous Peoples to "Indian Reservations." However, through a combination of my cluelessness in connecting the dots, and textbooks / teachers who glossed over who was responsible and who benefitted, I never connected this to Land Grant Colleges. I will say, in the linked article, it mentioned that the financial benefit to Land Grant colleges has been very deliberately obscured, such that few people realize what actually happened and how land grant colleges greatly and wrongly benefitted from what was taken from the Indigenous peoples.

Just to slightly defend you against your own accusations of cluelessness, I teach (among other things), American Indian History at the university level and, while I had always suspected this was the case with land grant colleges, I had never seen it proven, certainly not in this detail, until this research was published (the initial reporting was in High Country News). So it does not reflect particularly poorly on you that you were unaware of the scope and scale of which economic dispossession underwrote the formation of lots of higher ed in this country.

Do many still use the term "American Indian" in professional/academic settings anymore?  I would imagine "Native American" and similar variants would dominate usage - not only for the sake of social sensitivity/correctness but also to avoid confusion with literal Indian-Americans.

Still a range of different terms that are broadly acceptable. My course is called "Native North America." Many people use "indigenous" as a catchall term (used frequently in analyses that include but reach beyond the Americas), the main professional organization is the Native American and Indigenous Studies Association, the western history assn hosts an "Indian Scholars Lunch." Many native folks self-describe as "Indian/American Indian" though it seems to be somewhat divided along generational lines, with older folks using that term more..

Obviously, "Indian" runs into the issues you suggest. When you can, using tribal names is probably best, because they're more specific and point to the political (as in sovereign nations) aspects of native identity.

Complicated, for sure. Acting in transparent good faith and not being defensive if someone asks for use of a different label is probably the most straightforward solution.

Just a thought...and hopefully this is constructive and appropriate to put this here. To encourage posts on popular topics and limit reposts have you thought about having recent posts bump a thread to the top?

I understand this isn't a thread for everyone's forum "wish list" but I think it would help with overall ease of use and limit double, triple, etc. threads on the same topic. It would also allow dumb threads to die immediately and popular threads to stick around for a while.

That's a mainstay feature of most boards...just my friendly 2 cents. Hope all is well!

Maizen's latest iteration (1982Miller) hung around quietly for a month or so but now is starting to go Full Maizen™. Every post is shitting on the coaching staff and program and is a blaring reminder of how sad and pathetic that guy's life is.

"Mullen backtracks..." thread title edited and its OP "Dorothy Mantooth" issued a warning due to offensive wording in his opening post title.

New user Zion Kuvalis banned for being a spammer.

Nearly "new" user 1982Miller banned for being a Maizen.

Damn!  Where did the Lane Kiffin putting on weight thread go?  I got to brag about my weight loss and made some somewhat remotely funny comments.  Now it's all dissociated electrons.

Back in August, my "J." account got locked.  Although my political views are not in line with Brian's, I don't think I crossed any lines.  Rather, I participated in a thread where one of the moderators attempted to ban somebody else, and I think my account was locked by mistake.

If I'm wrong, and my account was locked intentionally, so be it -- I have no intention of using this new account for anything besides this one message.  However, if I'm correct, and my account (username: J. -- I don't think I can post a link to it because it's locked) was banned inadvertently, please reinstate it.  Thank you. :)

Saw this a few days ago and wanted to finally respond.

No re-instatement of your "J" account because, among other posts that may or may not have been based upon Covid disinformation, you constantly were pushing an anti-mask agenda.

With Covid19 still spreading at a dangerous rate in the US and the discussion of covid being a very divisive issue on the MGoBoard, I'm not about to reopen that can of worms.

It hardly seems like that's going to be a problem if OT season is truly over, and I take umbrage at your use of the word 'disinformation.'  You've said that you're not going to ban people for being conservative, yet that's exactly what you've done.

Regardless, I said that I would accept your decision, and I stand by that.  I'm disappointed -- I miss the community here -- but that's life.

Thank you for taking a look.

Context is important.

Please reread and pay close attention to the part starting with "may or may not..."

" ...may or may not have been based upon Covid disinformation..."

You appear to be focused upon the word "disinformation"  without paying much if any attention to the remainder of what I posted.

The banning has nothing to do with being " conservative" or not.

I read every word that you posted, and I deleted several intermediate drafts of my response, because each of them came off (to me) merely as me trying to have the last word.  The thing is, this is a private website, and you have the right to ban any user you want for any reason that you want.

I don't think that I did anything that would warrant being banned under board policy; you disagree.  Ultimately, it's your opinion that counts.  I'm sadder about this than I'd like to admit; I was really looking forward to sharing the return of Michigan football with the rest of the board.  This is just one more gut-punch from 2020, I suppose.
