Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk has floated the idea of Tom Brady joining the Detroit Lions next season.

LINK.

The reaction seems to be OH HELL NO, but it's an interesting idea.

I have nothing against Florio normally, but it drives me fucking crazy to hear him say "Tua Tongavaialoa". Dude. Stop adding letters to the guy's name.

Never listened to Florio so no idea how he says it, but if it's something like "Tongavaialoa," that actually looks about right.

Tua himself says something like "tongue-oh-vī-loah", although I maybe detect a subtle extra syllable before "loah", which would make "Tongavaialoa" almost dead on.

Seems like the Lions are rebuilding. I do think they are way ahead of schedule on the rebuild but nonetheless I would stick to the plan if I was the Lions.

and if I was Brady, I would look for a team that is already built and ready to give it one shot for all the marbles.

I do not want Brady on the Lions (Goff is just fine, even good on a lot of Sundays) nor do I think he's needed but the offense is kind of set up already, no?

Yeah the defense is a rebuild but the teams mentioned as Brady landing spots are not slam dunks for a SB or playoffs. The Lions need a lot of pieces on defense (CB, LB are necessities in the draft or FA) and a sure-fire backup but the Lions are no longer the cesspool of twilight football careers. People might willing want to come to Detroit. Kind of nice for once.

Tom simply won't have much of a market this off-season IMO.

Unlike 2020, he doesn't have multiple teams only needing a QB to become contenders. That year, he had options in Tampa, Tennessee, Oakland (to a much lesser degree) and more.

This off-season, the only teams who are on the cusp of contending and need a QB is basically:

  • Giants (Lots of question marks, but they are way under the cap and could fill a few holes)
  • Jets (Great WR core, but OL is very concerning - might be 2022 Tampa again)

Outside of that, there are a few teams that could move on from starters and/or are young and have talent despite their record:

  • Vikings (If they find a sucker to pawn foist Kirk upon - who is the Jeff Fisher of QBs)
  • Dolphins (Tua is a massive question mark with his health)
  • Redskins (Awful QB situation, but lots of ok young talent)
  • Lions (Highly doubt they move on from Goff, but the Michigan QB potentially winning the most cursed team a Super Bowl in his last year or so in the NFL would be insane)

Finally, you have the teams that might take a chance on him despite the team having lots of question marks:

  • Raiders (they have no QB, and Jacobs might leave)
  • Patriots (Mac Jones and everyone looked awful with Patricia as OC this pas season)

I might be missing a team in there, but outside of that, there really arent many teams where there would be a mutual interest.

The Dolphins really would be the best move for him.  He probably already has a condo in south beach anyway.  Tua’s long term health is really the question mark here.  If the NFL and the players are really going to take CTE dead seriously, a medical retirement really should be something Tua thinks about this off season.  It’s never easy to walk away from something but who knows how many concussions he’s had that we don’t know about.  I’d be really concerned about his neurological health 20 years from now if I were in his corner.

I like your logic but I think the list is even narrower than you described. Seems to me that the Jets, Dolphins, and Commanders are the teams that are most being held back by QB play right now and would immediately benefit from plugging Brady into the lineup. Maybe the Pats too, but they haven't exactly surrounded Jones with good offensive talent or coaching. Of the above, my hunch is that maybe only the Dolphins would interest Brady.

Niners are an intriguing option for many reasons, but would they really move on from Purdy for a 46-year-old Brady when they are already in the NFC title game with Purdy as just a rookie? And the Raiders could use a QB, but would Brady put them over the hump in a meaningful way? He'd probably be good enough to have them in the wild-card hunt, but that just doesn't sound that exciting for a one or two year rental.

There's also no way the Giants move on from Daniel Jones for Brady. The Vikings seem to have their short-term guy in Cousins too (limited though he might seem to be).

Having been a Lions fan for slightly < 6 decades, please stop. The Lions can indeed have nice things, but will never have a great team.

I present my case:   Barry Sanders.  No better running back ever. Wow! Such a nice thing. Kickers in the Silverdome (RIP) who could always hit anything < 99 yards. Nice! And, of course, this year some guy from Michigan was so, so good on defense.  So many nice things.

Watching Brady, whom I want to be revered as the GOAT, end his career as a Lion? No. Too heart-breaking. I absolutely do not want to see him be one more nice thing gone to waste as a Lion.

Hegel remarks somewhere that all great, world-historical facts and personages return to their sport, as it were, twice. He has forgotten to add: the first time as tragedy, the second as farce.

Unless Tom Brady agrees to be the backup QB then maybe yes. The question is would Tom Brady be willing to take step back to end his career. The short answer is probably not. He's probably weighing options like this. Back up QB isn't a bad gig. Just ask Chad Henne.

I have to ask, with all deference to Tom Brady, why is it that even now some do these thought experiments where you summarily ditch your current QB for Tom Brady? See, I hate to say that it isn't really all that interesting an idea if you are a Lions fan at the moment because, well, Jared Goff is working out just fine for now.

If you had asked me this right when Stafford was on his way out the door, I might have stopped and thought about it seriously for a second,  even if it was doomed to remain a hypothetical (as it likely would be)but now....I think we might be on the right course, or closer to that than we've been anyway.

I doubt he wants to finish in Detroit; he's surely not the best use of the resources we have.  Defense + some additional help on o-line.  Goff -- at least this year -- was not the problem.
